The Koch Brothers Respond To Getting Busted For Running a Dishonest Ad With Bigger Lies

The Koch brothers had to pull an ad they were running against Rep. Pete Gallego (D-TX) after a television station refused to air it because it was dishonest. The Kochs responded by editing the ad to make it even more dishonest.

Here is the original ad that a television station refused to air:

Here is the original ad text:

They are our veterans. They gave their all, for us. But Washington isn’t protecting them. Our Texas VA clinics have some of the longest wait times in the nation. And these waits can be deadly. Congressman Pete Gallego admits he knew about it, yet did nothing to fix it. Refused to cosponsor the VA Management Accountability Act. Tell Pete Gallego fight for our veterans. Hold the VA accountable.

The problem is that the allegation made in the ad is false. The ad claims that Gallego was against the VA Management Accountability Act, but the Democratic congressman voted for the bill.

After a local NBC affiliate pulled the ad, the Koch brothers responded with a minor edit to the ad that was still a lie.

Here is the new text of the ad:

These are our veterans. They gave their all, for us. But Washington isn’t protecting them. Our Texas VA clinics have some of the longest wait times in the nation. And these waits can be deadly. Congressman Pete Gallego admits he knew about it, yet he let our veterans wait. And refused to cosponsor the VA Management Accountability Act. Tell Pete Gallego fight for our veterans. Hold the VA accountable.

The Gallego campaign responded with a statement, “We appreciate this Koch Brothers front group admitting that their first ad was a lie and taking it down but this new ad is actually even more dishonest. Texas veterans deserve much better than to be the target of this misinformation campaign from our opponent’s extremist friends.”

One of the biggest problems with our current campaign finance system is that not only can the Koch brothers lie at will, but there is no penalty for their lies. In fact, it can be beneficial to a Republican candidate to flood the airwaves with lies about their opponent as long as the source is a shady dark money group that can never be held accountable.

These tactics are less effective against well-funded candidates in Senate and presidential contests, but in a House race where incumbent Democrats may have few if any outside groups working to debunk the lies, candidates are often left to fend for themselves as the Koch machine dumps millions of dollars worth of false ads into a congressional district.

The Koch front groups don’t need to worry about apologizing when they get caught in a lie. They just double down and spread an even bigger lie. House races across the country are where the toxic impact of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision can be seen every day. Democrats are fighting back in every way that they can, but the playing field won’t be level until the Koch dollars are out of our campaign finance system.

  1. It’s a shame as rich as Kochs are that they couldn’t use that money to benefit society. Instead they persist in using it spread the GOP plague on us for their own greedy means.

  2. Call the station and complain. Call your elected rep and complain.

    Refuse to watch television ads.

    Demand candidates blog and live-chat.

    Vote.

  3. the Kochs have donated millions to various charities, but knowing their political and socialogical stance , I would guess hardly for the purpose of altruism…It’s money the gov cant tax and use…the PR and image building benefts are huge….and helps feed their limitless egos….if it does someone good…well

  4. Whatever happened to being sued for slander and libel? Isn’t it against the law to deliberately lie about someone in a public way to impugn their character or say something about them that is negative and patently false? I think the Koch brothers would sue for slander or libel if someone did this to them.

  5. Makes you wonder how rich is enough for them. Why do they want to be known as part of the repub party that destroyed our country for “we the people”?

  6. In the US it’s not against the law to lie in political ads. It doesn’t matter how blatant the lies are either. And the MSM is not liberal either. The MSM is repub owned and repub corporate board run.

  7. I am sure the ONLY time Koch bros. “give” money is only when there is something in it for them. I hope their souls rot in hell.

  8. They are both old geezers..what do they think they will live to 200 years old to take country of the country and be kings?

They are sociopaths..that is what they are.

  9. Yeah, I am sure with Koch’s money..that TV station will have hell to pay because they refused. Bullies, that is what they are.

  10. Not bright…the Supreme Court has held that it’s virtually impossible to sue any public figure for slander or libel. Or to sue anyone for lies concerning a public figure. Their thinking behind the ruling is that public figures can use their notoriety to rubuke the lies themselves. Yes…another brilliant SCOTUS decision.

  11. Kochs are cowards. Their money talks for them. I would love to see all the politicians involved with them brought out into the daylight, see how much they have been paid to rig/lie/sabotage our country, and their names listed on every major newspaper front page.

Koch are richer than anyone can imagine..and they feel compelled to snuff out the working person who is making do with what we have. They are just plain miserable, evil people.

  12. David Koch masks his role as one of the top financiers of the Tea Party movement and pro-polluter front groups by loudly tacking his name to more laudable charities, like the New York city ballet. Koch, who has professed his devotion to “The Nutcracker” ballet performance by Alexei Ratmansky, made a matching grant of $2.5 million so that it could go on this season. At a special opening of the performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music shortly before Christmas, Koch made an appearance to talk about his donation. The Financial Times’ John Gapper was in the audience and witnessed a crowd of “harried Brooklyn moms and salivating balletomanes” erupting in boos at the sight of the Tea Party billionaire:

Most people don’t care about their money…it is their character that is offensive

  13. Between the Koch Brothers and the Tea Party they are ruining the Republican Party. If you notice they are saying very little now.

  14. Of course they are not saying anything now..everything is going their way as far as messing with women’s anatomy. Not only are they running the GOP, they will be running the country if we don’t get out and vote.

I so despise everything they stand for, I can’t even describe it.

  15. The shame is only liberals read this site. But I keep saying let the Koch crap keep coming and at least we hear ya.

  16. Yes, the Koch Brothers are liars. Let’s make them losers and liars in November, by voting against Republicans and making sure they are not elected or re-elected.

  17. The really cool thing about obese bald white guys is they get sick and they die. Consider Howard Hughes. The man owned LTV. But his greed got to him. He was not fat or bald however.

  18. Don’t forget the Koch brothers take a tax deduction for the money they donate to charities. Most of the charities either support their agenda, neutralize opposition to their agenda, or benefit one of them personally. One of the brothers donates huge sums to cancer research. He has had cancer. I wonder who is going to get any new cancer treatment? You or me or the Koch brother who donated millions?

  19. It is hard to prove libel when the subject is a public figure. If you go to court who is going to have unlimited money to spend? A member of Congress would be hard pressed to come up with billions to defeat the Koch brothers.

  20. Individuals are promoting the “Citizen Koch” documentary (the one the Kochs squashed on PBS) in movie theaters across the country this summer. Personally, I don’t intend to take the Kochs lying down:)

Anyone can promote a local showing in their area – check out how easy it is: http://watch.citizenkoch.com/
