GOP In Serious Midterm Trouble As Most Americans Disapprove Of Their Own Representatives

Washington Post/ABC News poll released Tuesday reveals that most Americans are not satisfied with the job being done by their own Representatives. For the first time in the 25 years since the poll has asked the question, a majority of respondents stated that they disapprove of their own districts’ House members. Only 41% of those polled say that they approve of the job being done by their Representatives while 51% expressed disapproval. In the past, even while voters expressed extreme dissatisfaction with Congress, generally they would still offer support and approval for their Representatives. That is no longer the case.

Democrats scored much higher than Republicans when it came to favorability. Only 35% of those surveyed have a favorable view of the Republican Party. Meanwhile, 60% say they have negative feelings about the GOP. That represents a net negative of 25 points. On the other hand, Democrats are in the net positive, with 49% saying they see the Democratic Party favorably while 46% have a negative opinion of the party.

Considering that Republicans hold the majority in the House, this spells awful news for the GOP heading into the midterm elections. It also doesn’t appear that Republicans are going to do anything to get voters to side with them in the next few months. Congress just went on a five-week recess after House Republicans completely bungled an emergency funding border bill, only passing something at the last-minute that had no prayer of making it to the President’s desk. Prior to screwing up a spending bill to address the humanitarian crisis at the border, House Republicans voted to sue the President over his use of executive orders. Of course, once Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) saw that the craziest members of his caucus weren’t going to allow even the most bare-bones of legislation addressing the border crisis to pass due to it not being conservative enough, he called on the President to use executive orders.

Besides looking like complete idiots and unsympathetic racists regarding the border crisis, it seems as if Republicans are going out of their way to see how much more they can get the American public to hate them. Earlier this week, you had a Congressman from Alabama claim that President Obama and Democrats are waging a “war on whites.” On Monday, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) had a confrontation with a couple of DREAMers at a campaign event while Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY hightailed it out of there. The day before, King was on Fox News Sunday saying that Obama needs to be impeached. Boehner, after previously criticizing Obama for not visiting the border, himself declined an invitation from a House Republican colleague to see the border crisis. Finally, you have the specter of another government shutdown in the fall being orchestrated by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and the Tea Party members of the House.

It looks like a large number of Americans are regretting the decisions they made in 2010 when the Tea Party wave gave Republicans the majority in the House. Since then, Congress has been the least-productive in history and obstructionism is the name of the game in Washington. House Republicans have only been interested in holding ‘repeal Obamacare’ votes, investigating fake scandals and finding a way to impeach Obama. Apparently, they can’t be bothered with anything else.
