Donald Trump Once Again Gets His Facts Wrong While Endorsing GOP Senate Candidate

Last updated on July 17th, 2023 at 06:05 pm

On Monday afternoon, reality show host and wannabe GOP kingmaker Donald Trump sent out a tweet endorsing New Hampshire GOP Senate candidate Scott Brown in his race against the Democratic incumbent, Senator Jeanne Shaheen. The only problem is that he actually referred to a Rhode Island state lawmaker, State Sen. Jim Sheehan, in his tweet. Below is the tweet in question, which is still up on his Twitter account.

This isn’t the first time that Trump has gotten his facts wrong when endorsing a Republican for Senate. Earlier this month, Trump sent out a tweet lending his support to Rep. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who is running against the Democratic incumbent in Arkansas. Trump claimed that Cotton is a Rhodes Scholar. Politico quickly pounced on the tweet and pointed out that Cotton never received the scholarship. Cotton’s campaign staff also had to issue a denial regarding the Congressman being a Rhodes Scholar. Eventually, Trump deleted the tweet.

Below is an image of the tweet, courtesy of Talking Points Memo:

Now, we have an instance where Trump can’t even be bothered to know the actual name of the Senator he wants to be defeated.  Shaheen has been in office since 2009 and was a three-term Governor of New Hampshire and chairperson of John Kerry’s Presidential campaign prior to her time in the Senate. But, you know, she has a weird name, and Trump can’t be bothered to know those details when he’s giving his well-informed endorsement of a Senate candidate.

Remember, this is a man who garnered support from a number of Republicans to run in 2012 against President Obama. The fact that he was seen as even a semi-legitimate candidate during the last Presidential election cycle says quite a bit about the GOP and why it is extremely difficult to take Republicans seriously.
