This is exactly what the base needed. After a grueling beatdown of false equivalency narratives in the media, some of the President’s supporters found their spirits sagging in the lead up to the midterm elections. But all they needed was a POTUS push. And it’s here.
In an ad cut for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, President Obama urged voters help him, “I need you to get involved.” He followed that up with hard jabs at the Republican Congress, telling supporters, “I can’t do it alone.” The President reminded his base, “Just like our hard fought battles in 2008 and 2012, the Congressional election this fall will be about voter turnout.”
Watch here:
The President said (transcription via PoliticusUSA):
All across American I hear from people like you about issues that effect you every day like better paying jobs, raising the minimum wage, immigration reform, equal pay for women, preventing gun violence, making education more affordable and giving working families a fair shot in this country.
Well I am working every day to move our country forward, I can’t do it alone. I need partners in Congress who will work with me.
But here’s the thing, instead of rolling up their sleeves to work with me, we have a Republican Congress that does everything in their power to block progress. They were even willing to go so far as shutting down the government. Their actions are hurting our families.
Just like our hard fought battles in 2008 and 2012, the Congressional election this fall will be about voter turnout.
They’ll be about hard working Americans going to the polls to make their voices heard and elect a congress that cares about their concerns. Just like in our previous campaigns, it will take all of us working together to talk to voters and encourage them to vote. I know how hard you are willing to work to reach these folks and talk to them about the stakes in this election, and I’m asking you to do it again this year. We’ve got our work cut out for us. Most of our Democratic voters aren’t even aware that there’s an election on November fourth.
So I’m asking you are you willing to fight for a congress that works for you? Are you willing to commit to vote and share your commitment with your community? Are you willing to make phone calls and know on doors to ensure your fellow voters have a plan to vote this fall? If you are, then sign up now. Take action so that we can elect a congress that will fight for working families everyday. Michelle and I are going to do everything we can this fall to make sure that voters know how important this election is, but we can’t do it alone. I need you to get involved. To sign up today. Let’s get to work.
Message to the base: Your POTUS needs you.
Obama focused on the economy as an election issue in this volunteer appearance for the DCCC, just as he has been as President — and as Leader Nancy Pelosi wanted. Politically, this is exactly what the President needed to do. He needed to activate his loyal base to come to his aid. He needed to remind voters what is at stake. He needed to pivot back to the issues that he has made cornerstones of his presidency — how to best serve hard working Americans.
Obama refocused the election on the issues that matter to the American family.
President Obama just sent out his call to action. All his base needs is a few words from this President, and they are full speed ahead in drive forward mode for progress. Obama can get the people engaged with just a few heartfelt words about policies he is actively pushing. That is the thing about this President that the media fails to understand and take into account. He is beloved and he inspires, no matter what their polls tell them. (See the shock and awe of the 2012 election when the allegedly gone Obama voters magically reappeared.)
The Obama base never fails to surprise the mainstream media, showing up when they’ve been written off. And now that the President has called on them specifically to help him help them, the November 4th midterms might surprise us all.
