After weeks of being asked to come on the show, Sen. McConnell called in unexpectedly to Kentucky Sports Radio. Host Matt Jones was taken by surprise by McConnell’s call, but it was the senator who fell flat on his face.

McConnell is a well-known fan of the University of Louisville, but during the interview, he flipped his allegiances and said that he was also a fan of the University of Kentucky. McConnell said, “I think your listeners need to know that I’m a UK fan. I actually went to UK, unlike my opponent.” This was such a load of bull. McConnell is regularly seen at Louisville games. No one in the state seems to believe that McConnell is a Kentucky fan too, especially after his campaign ran an ad that confused the University of Kentucky and Duke.

Sen. McConnell admitted that he opposes raising the minimum wage, and he used a lie that has been debunked by the Department of Labor that raising the minimum wage will kill a million jobs. McConnell admitted that he supported taking away healthcare from 500,000 Kentuckians. McConnell broke out every debunked Obamacare lie in the Republican book in order to distract from the fact that he is trying take healthcare away from a half of a million people in his state.

McConnell dodged a question about climate change by offering the standard Republican refrain that he isn’t a scientist, but the wheels completely fell off of the interview when he was asked why he wouldn’t come to the studio and debate Alison Lundergan Grimes. McConnell said, “Well, we’re going to have a good debate Monday night. I recommend that you tune in. There are lots of people who wanted to sponsor a debate. This is the one that obviously ended up making the most sense to everyone.”

After dodging several questions about why he wouldn’t come to the studio, McConnell said, “We’ve had a good discussion. It’s been going on for thirty minutes. I’ve enjoyed it, and I appreciate the opportunity.” The problem was that the interview had only been going on for 13 minutes.

The McConnell campaign thought that they would get jump on host Matt Jones by setting up the interview at the last possible second, but the strategy backfired on them as McConnell was angry and sounded completely out of step. This interview was nothing short of a disaster for McConnell, and abruptly ending the call after the question was asked about debating Alison Grimes only served to confirm that he is ducking her.

The Kentucky Sports Radio interview was a bad campaign strategy that was poorly executed by a failing candidate. The conventional wisdom was that it was Grimes who needed the big debate performance on Monday, but it’s Mitch McConnell who is on the ropes as the election heads into the final few weeks with Alison Lundergan Grimes in a perfect position to end McConnell’s Senate career.
