Liberals Turn The Tables With Ad Blaming Mitch McConnell and Republicans For Ebola Deaths

agenda project ad budget cuts ebola

Republicans are getting a taste of their own medicine as a liberal group is running an ad in key Senate races blaming Republican budget cuts for Ebola deaths.

Video:

The ad by the Agenda Project features top Republicans all saying the word cut in between the facts about the hundreds of billions of dollars that congressional Republicans have slashed from the CDC and NIH budgets.

Democrats and liberals have watched Republicans and conservatives blame President Obama for anything and everything over the last six years. It is heartening to see the tables get turned but unlike what Republicans, usually, do the Agenda Project ad has the truth on its side.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins admitted that there would already be an Ebola vaccine ready if Congress would not have slashed the NIH budget, “NIH has been working on Ebola vaccines since 2001. It’s not like we suddenly woke up and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, we should have something ready here…Frankly, if we had not gone through our 10-year slide in research support, we probably would have had a vaccine in time for this that would’ve gone through clinical trials and would have been ready.”

The funding slide was marked by George W. Bush cutting CDC funding in every one of his budgets. The Center For Disease Control (CDC) has had $600 billion cut for their budget since 2010. The NIH has received less funding under congressional Republicans than they had during the Bush years.

The topic of the ad is Ebola, but there is a larger point that Republicans never want to talk about. Budget cuts have consequences. Republicans always sell their budget cuts to the public as cutting the fat, when the truth is that there is very little fat in the federal budget to cut. The majority of the budget each year is already locked in as mandatory spending, so when Republicans cut the budget in areas like public health and research, the cuts will have life and death consequences.

Ebola isn’t going to spread and become a massive public outbreak, but Republican cuts have left the country underprepared for a public health crisis.

The ad closes with a simple message, “Republican cuts kill. Vote.”

Liberals are letting the American people know that there is a high cost to be paid for supporting budget slashing ideologues and that price may be your health or your life.

  1. The best thing about the ad the Liberals produced? Unlike the GOP propaganda ads, this ad speaks the truth….

  2. This is what happens when you shrink government to the bare bones. There are many things that require government help, and this is one of them. Imagine the chaos if they had killed the ACA. People would hesitate to get treatment.

  3. I would love to know what the average Texan libertarian’s viewpoint on cutting the CDC’s budget by billions is, now that Ebola has come to the USA?
Libertarians don’t need Federal Agencies, do they?

  4. As usual, President Obama is cleaning up another Republican made disaster.

The Republican’s should be thanking President Obama for saving there asses…

If Romney had won the election, things would be so bad about now for the average American…..

  5. And according to Firedoglake the republican
Rubio plan to shut down the government is scheduled for after the election on Dec 11th, unless Obama stops subsidies to help americans buy health insurance. They have a list of co-sponsors including Daiper Dave Vitter, John Grandpa McCain and all the usual suspects.

  6. I love the ad with one complaint. The victims they show are black. We all know the teahadist can give two shits about people of color. You even have some calling for genocide of infected areas.

  7. Joan if the Reich Wing wins the senate then the government WILL be shut down while still open business for the corporate conservatives and the collection of their paychecks.

  8. Oh you silly liberals, the Free Market would do this so much better than the CDC, right?
    Snark . . . .
Government does things the free market won’t in its sacred pursuit of PROFIT!!!!!!

  9. This type of ad is effective with Conservatives, because studies show they have greater emotional responses to negative stimuli.

Showing the dead bodies with the images of Conservative politicians will hit home.

My only worry is that the study also shows that while Conservatives react to the images with fear, they are also sexually aroused by the same images.

Oh well, I guess they can vote blue and crank one out both on the same day.

  10. Gee, seems like every person in congress that votes to make these types of cuts is part of a Death Panel…

  11. I love the timing of this. Mcconnell and Grimes have their debate tonight. The GOP are narrow minded. Actions have consequences, and I am glad the Democrats are giving The Retbugs a taste of their own medicine.

  12. Maxie, I’d watch the debate but I think “Gotham” is much more entertaining and it’s just starting to get deep. Then the last episode of Magic City on DVD.

  13. I hope someone again asks Grimes who she voted for — and she throws it back by asking the person who they voted for. It will demonstrate the partisan nature of the questioner.

  14. It’s about time the TRUTH is told as to just WHY there is NO vaccine against Ebola! If the damn Republicans/Tea party had NOT CUT funds for NIH and the CDC, there would have already been a vaccine to get rid of the Ebola virus! The TRUTH of the matter is that the GOP/Tea Party cut the funds so that they could give more money to the millionaires and the billionaires! Just like all the other cuts to essential and necessary social program like SNAP! They have NO qualms about taking away food from hungry, starving children so they can give the super wealthy more money! The old biblical saying is certainly true, now more than ever! “The LOVE of money is the root of ALL EVIL!”

  15. Erik Erickson Blames Fat Lesbians For Cuts In Fed Funding Of Ebola

Democrats have rushed out of the gate with an attack ad against Republicans claiming if only we had spent more money, we would be able to solve the Ebola situation.

It’s a defensive ad that reeks of desperation. At a time when more and more Americans, including millennials, are concluding government just doesn’t work, it probably won’t be effective. And Republicans can respond in kind.

For example, instead of studying Ebola, the National Institutes of Health were studying the propensity of lesbians to be fat.

  16. As usual, Erickson is cherry-picking the parts he finds objectionable, while disregarding the rest. The study also researched why heterosexual males are twice as likely to be obese, and gay men. But I guess that part of the study hit a bit too close to home, for corpulent Erickson.

  17. You have said what I’ve been saying for years. Dems ‘should hand back to the retuhgs what they hand out all the time.

  18. When I read things like this from rethugs I almost wish they would get this terrible disease and there would be no help available to them. Pass it on to their family and eliminate future rethugs, but then, I sound just like them. Hate myself for that!!!

  19. Democrats’ idea of a budget “cut” is to give a 5% increase instead of a 6% increase.

There is no cut. The budget is increased.

    Lies.

  20. You got one bagger saying the White House cut the budget and now you come with your idiotic nonsense the budget was increased? Sheesh I thought you baggers get your talking points in the morning so you on the same page

  21. All Grimes needs to say is:

“Well I certainly wasn’t going to vote for the man who wrote off 47% of the population.”

    That’s it.

  22. If this doesn’t scare you into voting then nothing will

The deadhead zone, about to become even deader Here’s a thought, courtesy the New Republic: “James Inhofe–who believes that climate change is ‘the greatest hoax ever perpetrated’–[is] likely poised to become the chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.” There’s nothing like having the sharpest minds delving into our keenest problems. – See more at: http://pmcarpenter.blogs.com/p_m_carpenters_commentary/#sthash.ETato4dX.dpuf

  23. Sadly, those of us living in red controlled states that can’t afford the ACA still hesitate to get treatment. In one local ad, put out as an attack on Steve Southerland, which I don’t mind, since I’ll be attacking him with my vote against him, he is shown saying how his office in Washington has a wonderful view. Steve, I have a wonderful view where I work, too. I view of the hospital across the street with the award-winning wound care centre I’ll never have access to due to the BS you and your good ole boys on the hill keep stirring up. And meanwhile, my venous ulcer keeps getting the just what little treatment I can supply with anti-biotic ointment, silver oxide solutions, compression socks, and lots and lots of gauze pads. Sometimes the pain can be so bad, I would welcome Ebola.
Get the Dems back in power, ASAP!

  24. GOP sent-out calls for People with Negative ACA Experiences.
Your Story should be told in Ads…
    As well!

My heart goes out to you. Believe me…
We are fighting for you Rho!

I’m so amazed Red State Religious have all forgotten:
“Whatever you have to for the *least* among you…You did it for me”

  25. Donna it is perfectly simple, remember when the rethugs announced their intentions to cut the government down so small they could
flush it down the bathtub – well the ebola crisis is one way they succeeded.

  26. Wow, after reading these comments, you people really scare me. You actually believe what you wrote. You are all a product of our wonderful school system that starts brainwashing good little liberals a very young age.

There weren’t budget cuts you morons. They just didn’t allow the budget to grow as much as the stupid democrats wanted. SO instead of let’s say a 10% increase, there was an 8% increase.

MAYBE the liberals should CUT the friggin WELFARE they pay to people who REFUSE TO WORK. And don’t tell me there aren’t jobs, I see tons of help wanted signs everywhere. Oh wait, you all can make more money collecting Welfare and using EBT cards rather than WORKING for a living.

  27. This ad is disgusting. Democrats never cease to amaze. It is stunning just how low you all are willing to go to shove your noses into the gutter. Besides, being a lie, the most despicable aspect of this ad is the use of dead Africans to achieve a political goal. Shameful. Pathetic. Immoral.

  28. Don’t you have some poor refugee child to terrorize? Aren’t you missing FAUXSNEWS? We don’t believe your teahadist lies.

  29. What’s disgusting is you refusing to take responsibility for the negative effects of the words/votes of the pols you voted for. When Pres. Obama recommended spending to save the economy in 2009, GOPTPers said cut, cut, cut. The reason the stimulus was as small as it was was because GOPTPers in Congress demanded tax cuts and the president compromised with them. They still went on to lie about the stimulus, claiming it didn’t work, while they accepted and spent the funds in their states/districts. In the South we say, “Hurt dogs will sure holler!” Hollering is exactly what you’re doing now. If you hadn’t supported the pols who repeatedly called for funding cuts to essential agencies and cheered them on, you’d have no reason to come to PUSA and try to chastise us about a campaign ad that is 100% true. Just because you’re willing to support and defend petty, corrupt, self-serving pols doesn’t mean everyone is willing to do the same. You all made your bed, now lie in it.

  30. Donna, it’s times like this that we need a Surgeon General to step up and take control of the situation. Too bad the repube mouthbreathers in the Senate have had a hold on PBO’s Surgeon General candidate for nearly a year, don’t you think? It turns out that the NRA doesn’t like Dr Murthy because he doesn’t like assault weapons. WTF??? Since when does the freakin’ NRA know the first thing about public health? When those dumbass repubes get ebola–and they’re making that eventuality more probable every day–I suggest they go to Wayne Lapierre for treatment.

  31. What’s funny is the other day Johnny McInsane said Obama needs to appoint an Ebola czar. Forget for the moment that he and the rest of the clowns have went crazy over the word czar but I guess it just went over his and the reporters head that is exactly what a Surgeon General is.

  32. Republicans Are Responsible for the Ebola

Republicans are proud of their endless budget cuts. They love to quote Ronald Reagan’s joke about how “the nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help,'” which never fails to set Teabagger audiences into apoplectic fits of applause and mouth-breathing cheers of approval. This is not some shady part of their political record. This is something they’re proud of, something they post in high and prominent places of their websites.

  33. Oh STHU, Matisse! I’m sick and tired of GOP voters blaming Democrats for the results of GOP policies! At least have the guts to *admit* that the GOP’s spending cuts have caused problems and which ones!

You know, that’s the WORST trait of the GOP: they do stuff that makes things worse, then refuse to claim it when the bad effects come home to roost, blame it on the Liberals/Democrats… and their electorate just laps it up. It’s like being in grade school and watching the kid who 10 seconds before was proudly aiming a fart at someone, blaming it on the quiet kid in the corner when the teacher walks in and says, “Who did that?”

The thing is, it’s even worse when it’s ADULTS doing it, and what they’re trying to shift blame for is something that hurts people’s LIVES… or in this case, may even kill people.

  34. Djchefron, ever hear of the phrase, “Too many cooks in the kitchen?” If you’re implying that they should have put *all* their researchers on an Ebola vaccine:

    1. There’s limited facilities where work like that can be done, and the work is very costly (protocols, danger in shipping and holding the disease, the equipment needed, etc.). So what do you do with the 95 other researchers you have who simply can’t fit in there? Put them on other needed, if *maybe* less vital, projects. Let’s face it, most citizens would’ve screamed bloody murder if they’d diverted all resources to Ebola (“That’s an AFRICAN disease! What about ours?”)

    2. There *are* other important things Americans and others in the world are dying from RIGHT NOW; hence, the need for more than just work on a single vaccine for a disease that prior to now, hadn’t spread so virulently or to the U.S. at all. They have to fight *all* diseases, not just one. And yes, that includes obesity, diabetes, heart disease, …

  35. the truth hurts, doesn’t it matisse?
people are literally dying due to republican stupidity.
my only criticism of the ad is it doesn’t mention that we have no surgeon general because of republican obstruction.

  36. Finally, a truthful political ad. This one is more discomforting than all the Republican lies about how their side wants to create jobs…. while the corporations and the rich sock their money in the stock market.

The only thing good about that is that the market is getting ready to ‘correct’ itself. With all their money, made off the backs of the low paid working class.

It’s a real shame the country has come to this. Are enough of us angry about it enough to vote them out next month in the middterms?

  37. Hilarious. You Republicans spend years acting like a bunch of hyperactive juvenile delinquent howler monkeys flinging poo everywhere but when it hits the fan and starts splattering back on you all you can do is whine about how it’s “not nice” that someone is flinging your poo back at you.

Guess what… WE as a nation are TIRED of your hyperactive juvenile delinquent howler monkey poo flinging…

  38. If the bodies of deceased Africans offend you, then perhaps the US should do something to stop Africans from dying.
