Liberals came up just short as Speaker John Boehner and the House Republicans took a shot at passing the government funding bill, and he squeaked out a win, 219-206.
67 Republicans voted no, while 57 Democrats voted for the bill. It was well known that the bill could not pass without Democratic support as Speaker Boehner needed Democratic votes to make up for the 50-70 Republicans who were expected to vote no.
Liberals, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, were outraged over a rider attached to the bill that rolled back an important regulation on derivatives that are a part of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law.

The bill looked doomed when Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that she would not vote for it. The Republicans who voted no did so because they were angry that the bill didn’t do anything to “stop” President Obama’s executive orders on immigration. While Democrats were irate over the Dodd-Frank rider, and the further gutting of campaign finance reform laws.
A majority of Democrats voted against the bill, but in the end, Republicans had just enough support from Democrats and members of their own party to support it. The bill will quickly move to the Senate a short CR might be needed, but a government shutdown has been avoided.
The takeaway is that the liberals have arrived, and it is going to be a long two years for John Boehner, Mitch McConnell or anyone else who dares to cross them.
