The White House has put Republicans on notice by vowing that the president will veto the Republican backed bill that would authorize the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

According to The Hill,

The White House vowed on Tuesday that President Obama would veto legislation that approves construction of the Keystone XL pipeline if it passes Congress.

“If this bill passes this Congress the president won’t sign it either,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said on Tuesday of the pending Keystone legislation.

The bill is all but guaranteed to pass the Senate, with 60 co-sponsors as of Tuesday morning.

The president has been sending signals for months that he will veto the bill authorizing the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. In December 2014, the president said, “So there is no. I won’t say no. There is very little impact, nominal impact on US gas prices, what the average American consumer cares about, by having this pipeline come though. And sometimes the way this gets sold is, let’s get this oil and it’s going to come here, and the implication is that it’s going to lower gas prices here in the United States. It’s not. There’s a global oil market. It’s very good for Canadian oil companies, and it’s good for the Canadian oil industry, but it’s not going to be a huge benefit to US consumers. It’s not even going to be a nominal benefit to US consumers.”

In November, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest suggested that President Obama would veto the bill, “But there have been previous proposals that I expect would be consistent with proposals that have been discussed overnight. And in evaluating those earlier proposals, we have indicated that the President’s senior advisors at the White House would recommend that he veto legislation like that. But we’ll — and that does continue to be our position.”

The news that Obama will veto the bill combined with the announcement by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that Senate Democrats have the votes to sustain the president’s veto means that the bill to authorize the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline is dead before it has even been voted on.

Republicans will make their first legislative act of the 114 Congress passage of a big gift to the oil companies while President Obama and congressional Democrats will stand up for the interests of ordinary Americans. Democrats are going to add more intrigue to the debate by introducing a series of amendments to the Senate bill that would move to turn Keystone XL into a real jobs bills.

At the end of the day, the new Republican congressional majority is about to feel the sting of Obama’s veto hammer, as Boehner and McConnell are about to find out that Democrats are not going to roll over and give them what they want.

  1. Do the american people know that pipelines
frequently rupture and this goes over the water supply to middle america, not only that, I understand that there is nothing in the bill to safeguard americans in case of a rupture, the canadian companies have no liability in an accident, it is us – the american taxpayer who would foot the bill for damages.
And all this for a foreign country – also Boehner and friends have stock interests in the companies that are demanding to do this!

  2. No they don’t. First since 2008 all they have been told is drill baby drill. Second the media has failed to inform. In the words of chuck toad “Its not our job to correct republican lies” and three as long its not in my backyard and in the states that will host the pipeline they think it will lead too jobs which bring us back too number2

  3. The only ones surprised by this will be the GOP. They live in fantasy land. Gaining control of both Houses has gone to their heads. As long as PBO is in the WH, they will accomplish nothing. Which means that nothing has changed.

I despise the Kochs, Boehner, McConnell, well all the Teapublicans!! I was asked by President Obama after volunteering for him during the 2012 Election, what were three things I want to accomplish. I responded with, you know Mr. President to DESTROY the Kochs precious empire and crush them like the cockroaches they are. He sent me info that I have researched and I have solutions, I’ve seen this coming since the 1980’s, my family said I was Crazy, well now they see. There should be NO homeless or starving people in the USA!

  5. Fossil fuels are so jejune.
Solar power, windmills and green technologies will bankrupt big oil.

  6. I would hope the president would veto the bill. I would also hope that congress would uphold his veto;however, the dems seem to always find a reason to cave. It will be in the spirit of so called compromise.

  7. Joan, no the average American does not know anything about the dangers of the pipeline. We are being kept from the truth in the MSM 24/7. The MSM is repub owned and repub corp board run. That says it all.
Do the American people know there would be no turning back if the aquifer was destroyed where that pipeline would go? Do the American people know that we are talking about less than 100 permanent jobs when it’s built? No they don’t. Unless one searches for the truth, they will be fed the repub marketing message big time.

  8. The operative word is “overreach”. That’s what I’m rooting for big time. It’s the only way that the uncurious will be forced to wake up.

  9. I was appalled to find out that there have been three major lies about the Keystone Pipeline project:

    a. “It will lower the price of gasoline as it will put more oil into the American supplies.” No, the oil will be going OUT of the US.

    b. “It will create tens of thousands of jobs.” No, it will create a whole 35 permanent jobs. That’s it.

    c. “It is a safe form of transporting oil, and eco-friendly.” When have oil pipelines EVER been “eco-friendly”? It is like the old saying that you can have 1,000 attaboys, but it only takes one “aw crap” to wipe out the attaboys.” Oil spills, whether they be from pipelines or transport ships, has ALWAYS been a disaster.

  10. When the kochs talk the kochsucers, well get on their knees and suck

Their new spiel is since gas is too low we have to raise gas taxes. Take it away Sen Thune The Republican-controlled Senate is now proposing a gas tax increase that would be used to help make up for shortfalls in highway budgets. The proposed increase would add 12 cents per gallon to the price, regardless of the price at the pump.

The proposal is under consideration, thanks to incoming Republican leader of the Senate Transportation Committee, Senator John Thune of South Dakota, a huge proponent of the Keystone XL pipeline project. Thune says the highway fund is looking at “about a $100 billion shortfall.” Many KeyXL advocates use rising gas prices as a justification for the project but few of them explain that the result of KeyXL would be to create more oil exports.

Then blame Obama and the Democrats for higher taxes

  11. Mr Obama, veto this and make America proud they have a president that is intelligent and has the people’s well being above the Rethuglicans agenda of destruction.
