Republican Fascists Want Pledge of Allegiance in English Only

If you want to hear one of the craziest things to come out of a Republican mouth this week, it’s the Republican objection to anyone reading the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic. This apparently deplorable display of patriotism took place on March 18 during National Foreign Language Week, of all things.

Look, I’m all for stupidity carrying the day on Fox News. I mean, where better, and who better to recite it than the Queen of Dumb, Elisabeth Hasselbeck? But c’mon. Who knew that reciting the pledge of allegiance in Arabic could make kids want to join ISIL? I wonder, if I recite it in Latin, if I will want to become a new Mussolini and restore the Roman Empire (look out Carthage, I’m coming for you first!). Or if in Old Norse, I will seek to follow in the terroristic footsteps of that feared freebooter, Harald Hardrada and sack York, or in lieu of York, because it’s far away, New York. Or even Ragnar Lothbrok (Ragnarr Loðbrók, “Ragnar Hairy Breeches”) and sack just about everything I can get my hands on (starting with Fox News).

Ragnar-Lodbrok

Who knows what reciting it in French might do to a kid…why, he might start putting plants and solar panels on everybody’s roof, and then where would we be? Egads, I can barely breathe. Somebody help me… I don’t know what sort of bizarre alchemy Republicans imagine, but neither it – nor they – are of this world. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with them because even if Jesus came back, he wouldn’t want them, and who can blame him, really?

Media Matters compiled some of the crazy remarks for our amusement (or horror):

Radio Host Laura Ingraham Compares Saying Pledge In Arabic To “Skinheads” Saying Pledge. On the March 20 edition of her radio program, Laura Ingraham said, “What if the skinheads want to do the Pledge of Allegiance? Are we going to do that too?” and, “Most people who love this country love it enough to speak the language [English].” [Courtside Entertainment Group, The Laura Ingraham Show, 3/20/15]

Fox’s Alex Ferrer: Pledge Should Not Be Read In Language “Tied To … Terrorist Attacks.” On the March 20 edition of Fox News’ Outnumbered, guest host Alex Ferrer said “the Pledge of Allegiance, I don’t think, should be read in a different language, but especially not — especially not — in a language that is so tied to the terrorist attacks that we’re seeing all the time.” [Fox News, Outnumbered, 3/20/15]

Fox Guest: Reciting Pledge In Arabic Inappropriate Because “We Are At War” With Many Who Speak Arabic. On the March 20 edition of Fox & Friends, President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy Zuhdi Jasser suggested reciting the Pledge in Arabic could encourage young Muslims to join ISIS and said the Pledge should not be in the language of “communities or nations we’re at war with.” [Fox News, Fox & Friends,3/20/15]

Daily Caller: The School “Screw[ed] Up The Pledge Of Allegiance.” Reporting about the incident, the Daily Caller called the high school’s decision a “gimmick” and said the school “[managed] to screw up the Pledge of Allegiance.” [Daily Caller, 3/20/15]

Fox Host: School Should “Keep The Pledge Of Allegiance In English.” On the March 20 edition of Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, host Martha MacCallum said “I’m not sure it was the brightest idea to have them do the Pledge of Allegiance in any language except English.” MacCallum later added “maybe you ought to keep the Pledge of Allegiance in English.” [Fox News, America’s Newsroom, 3/20/15]

Fox’s Todd Starnes: Saying Pledge In Arabic Means “Islam Is Given Accommodation.” In a FoxNews.com opinion piece on the controversy over the Pledge being recited in Arabic, network radio host Todd Starnes claimed “our schoolhouses have become places where Christianity is marginalized and Islam is given accommodation”

What is far worse than all this nonsense from conservatives is that the school actually apologized:

The intention was to promote the fact that those who speak a language other than English still pledge to salute this great country. We sincerely apologize to any students, staff or community members who found this activity disrespectful.

Indeed. Apologize for a display of patriotism? In a foreign language in a nation of immigrants during a week celebrating foreign languages? What is our once great country coming to?

  1. Dummy with the “We live in America…” writing on his HONDA makes me lol, then sigh with sadness for what many are becoming in this country.

    Signed,

A Very Proud Second Generation American

  2. So much for freedom of speech. Didnt fox sue over freedom of speech? I guess its only okay when your speech agrees with these fascist pigs.

  3. I thought we are all equal, hm?

If we are equal, then what is wrong with the students learning another language, especially one that isn’t taught as much as Arabic is.

  4. This is not just an example of Republicans being Fascist. This is yet another example of Republicans being intolerant and controlling bigots.

  5. I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. Though I found it more disheartening that the school didn’t get enough positive feedback? Examples of these divisions keep happening but it’s always reported as 50/50 for each side of the issues – (Utah governor letters about firing squads) … Yet when one sees photos the numbers aren’t evenly divided. We can’t all burn out at once!!

  6. Or Lakota, Remember, we invaded their homes! Slaves and slave owners killed these folks! That makes us terrorists.
Former slave owners burned churches! Wouldn’t want folks to be speaking that terrorist language!

  7. The Pledge of Allegiance should not be chanted in English, nor in any other language, and no one should ever stand up for it either because it was the origin of the Nazi salute and Nazi behavior (that is one of the amazing discoveries by the historian Dr. Rex Curry). http://rexcurry.net

Francis Bellamy (author of the pledge) touted “military socialism” and wanted it imposed on all of society. He wanted the government to take over all schools to achieve that, and the pledge was part of that plan. When the government granted his wish, the government schools (socialist schools) imposed segregation by law and taught racism as official policy.

Though Dr. Curry’s discovery was made over a decade ago, the modern media remains ignorant of the historical research (as shown by the article above). Modern media outlets refuse to show old photos and film footage of the USA’s early stiff-armed gesture.

The pledge’s brainwashing continues to be the origin of Nazi behavior and it is a sad …

  8. I agree with the folks who said it should be in native american.

To be honest after living in the south I have my doubts about any of them even having a familiarity with the english language, I still don’t understand the way they twist it – like ‘where you at?’and
“he seen me in the store’
Hurry up and get some english teachers
because they are not speaking english.

  9. The Pledge of Allegiance should not be chanted in English, nor in any other language, and no one should ever stand up for it either because it was the origin of the notorious stiff-armed German socialist salute and of that type of behavior (that is one of the amazing discoveries by the historian Dr. Rex Curry).

  11. They totally missed the point with their reflexive racism, the students pledging allegiance to the United States of America.

For their feeble minds, shouldn’t that be the point? I know, a second layer (language) is as always much too much for them. In my profession there’s always conversation about the need for increased critical thinking skills. Every time I see Elizabeth Hasselbeck and hear her bleatings, it proves the point of how it’s so needed yet taxes too many of us. No wonder Fox is #1.

  12. I agree that it should be in English. the Constitution is written in English USA has a British legacy.
America must improve the proficiency of English simply for the fact that world business is mostly carried out in this language. Look at the multi-lingual Europe. The people there have a better command of English, written and spoken, than those Americans who shut their door to the rest of the world, in the name of some Amendment rights.
    That’s not so bright.

  13. There were tribal laws before the constitution! If it wasn’t for Navaho, there would have been a lot of easy spying by the Nazi’s! As for our constitution, it advocated slavery and was vague about eradicating it! England is now relegated to their islands most of them are reverting to their own languages! We should do the same!

  14. The ancestors of the TP/GOPs, who came to the USA, must be turning over in their graves. I hope they haunt the halls of Congress during these days of increased fascism!

Yes, all should learn a second language. A second language was required when I went to high school.

  15. I wonder if these control freaks will ever figure it out. We are nearly all Americans. There is no national language, we can speak the way we want to. Speaking another language doesn’t harm anyone, but the crappy brains of the control freaks who think they are the only ones with rights. They are the most ignorant freaks on the planet. These fascists are the ones who need to change and become Americans again. They are now UnAmericans in every way. I agree with a commenter above, even Jesus wouldn’t want these fake Christians.

    .

  16. It was “National Foreign Language Week” for crying out loud. Where is the problem? A profession of loyalty and patriotism is a profession of loyalty and patriotism in whatever language it is uttered.

  17. I recall having to learn and recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Aleut as a 5th or 6th grade student, when I lived in the Pribilof Islands. The Pribilof’s are two small islands in the middle of Alaska’s Bering Sea.

This would have been in the mid 70’s. I don’t recall any parents getting all bent out of shape about this perceived slight against Patriotism.

  18. My sons have a Hispanic last name. My middle child was only receiving 15 minutes of speech therapy a week. Come to find out the school thought he was bilingual and his father is the only bilingual speaker in our house. We moved him into charter virtual school and all our other children after some kid broke my son’s arm and told him go home. He is a citizen 6th generation. In home school our son is now receiving 2 hours of speech therapy a week. He was in a severe disability class and we are even teaching him to read. Fox promotes racism i cannot be a conservative anymore it goes against Christianity.

  19. Do you think when Elizabeth Hasselbeck and her ilk travel to Europe they speak Spanish or Italian or Russian or Greek when in those respective countries?

No, they speak English, and whine like some of the contestants on The Amazing Race when natives of these countries look at them and shake their heads.

“The Ugly Americans” — Elizabeth Hasselbeck and her ilk are the poster children for the dark side of America.

  20. I would tell the fascist Reich Wingers FINE!!…but ONLY if we can also get rid of the God $h(T in the pledge!!! GOD does NOT belong in any pledge and NOT on ANY government document!!! Here’s how you can tell a TRUE American… ask them what our national motto is, if the spew “In god we trust” then they are NOT AMERICAN but a Christian fascist sheeple!

  21. As a Native American,I have already had one foreign language shoved down my throat, when Republicans under Grant, decided to kidnap us from our families, and send us to government boarding schools thousands of miles from home,so they could try to turn us into Dark skinned white people. ENGLISH!! Not interested in another, thank you. My native tongue is Mohawk. You know,American!

  22. No objection to being bi lingual(I am) but if you want to learn another language,it should be voluntary, not forced on you(trust me i know)
