GOP War On Gays Rages On As Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal Plans To Sign Anti-Gay Bill

Louisiana Republican Governor Bobby Jindal announced Tuesday that he intends to sign the ”Louisiana Marriage and Conscience Act” into law when it crosses his desk. In a written statement, Jindal spokesperson Shannon Bates Dirmann wrote:

Yes, we support the bill. This is a common sense bill that provides necessary protections for individuals to prevent adverse treatment from the state based on religious beliefs regarding marriage.

The bill was introduced into the Louisiana legislature by State Rep. Mike Johnson (R-Bossier City). The legislation would allow private businesses to refuse to recognize legal same-sex marriages. The law is more far-reaching than the controversial Indiana “religious freedom” law which sparked national outrage. The Louisiana measure would grant a private company the right to deny gay and lesbian couples the same benefits that they provide for straight married couples.

University of Virginia Law Professor Douglas Laycock described the Louisiana bill as more extreme than many similar anti-gay measures passed by other states. Laycock notes:

It would be a license to the private sector to refuse, for religious or moral reasons, to recognize same-sex marriages. It covers not just churches and religious organizations, but also the for-profit sector, and with no limit on size or diversity of ownership.

Governor Jindal may be under the illusion that he can sign the measure without enduring the public backlash that greeted Indiana Governor Mike Pence, when Pence signed Indiana’s “religious freedom” right to discriminate law. Louisiana still lags well behind the rest of the nation in support for marriage equality. A 2015 LSU poll found 51 percent of Louisiana residents oppose marriage equality, compared to 42 percent who support it.

Nevertheless, a substantial percentage of Louisiana residents support marriage equality. Furthermore, a high percentage of visitors to the state also favor marriage equality, so Jindal may be underestimating the potential backlash to passing a discriminatory law.

Jindal spends much of his time surrounded by right-wing ideologues, so he may not have his pulse on public opinion. On Good Friday, Jindal attended an Iowa prayer breakfast with Duck Dynasty celebrity Willie Robertson. The Louisiana Governor even quipped that Robertson would make a fine running mate. Jindal has a point. If he chose Willie Robertson as his running mate, it would be an honest selection, that highlights just how dead serious the Republican Party is about wanting to continue waging a culture war against gay and lesbian Americans.

  1. …”Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.”

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

  2. Wow, the hate coming out of the Republican party is insane. These guys are literally loosing their minds. The crazy thing is Jindal actually believes he can be President.

  3. So much for the Mardi Gras. What an idiot. He cares only to appease the ultra right base for political purposes and not at all for the people of his state.

  4. Well you know gawd told him.

Time for the good people in Louisiana to kick his ass. It would be very cathartic for them. This howdy doody needs to get his butt stomped just like Pence.

  5. If private, for-profit corporations can refuse to recognize marriages lawfully contracted because they object to the gender of the parties, it seems evident they can do so if they object to their race, ethnicity, religious affiliations, or citizenship. Indeed, I suspect that a test case is being made of gay people, seen as unpopular or “squicky”, simply to reopen the door to other forms of discrimination which were long ago outlawed.

  6. Like most of the republicans, Jindal is as crazy as they come.
When reading from an english newspaper article talking about what a good deal the Iran deal was, it said something about the republicans trying to thwart the deal, it then went on to say that most of that party were only qualified to be carnival barkers.
    I agree!

  7. Gawd told him, Gawd told Perry, Gawd told Cruz (and his Daddy,) Gawd told Santorum, Gawd really told Huckabee…and I’m sure Gawd is also whispering to Jeb and Carly also too. But then, Gawd was also talking to Palin, and then to Mittens, so I’m not sure which of these stellar examples of Christianity will crawl to the top of the heap. Gawd is certainly not very choosy these days about who he wants to run Amerika….of course their Gawd is David Koch, so he’s just playing all the cards at once.

  8. I so agree…I really think that very soon there will be a law banning women from voting…after they have banned minority men. The white male is so scared of becoming a minority themselves that they will do anything, subvert the Constitution, threaten to kill, even actually allow people to die, to protect their ‘rights.’ And the hell with anyone who dares get in their way.

  9. Talk about opening up a can of worms. This means any private business might be able to refuse to serve Jindal due to his color. What a dumb ass.

  10. they probably wouldn’t refuse him because of his color… they’d just make the assumption that he was a Muslim (he isn’t)… just like they’d make an assumption someone was gay… whether it was true or not…

  11. Please by all means proceed Piyush<? Because it worked so swimmingly for your fellow Nazi's in the recent past.

  12. Who does this punk-ass, GOP “twit” Governor actually believe he really is??? God’s gift to the U.S.A.??? Tell him to go outside and dig a huge “PIT” in the ground. Call it “Hell” and then jump into it. With all of his friends. He can then stay there with them “forever”!!! Put a gate, a lock and a guard 24/7 on the gate into Bobby Jindal’s, new digs called “HELL”. He can then “rule” over all of his friends in the pit of “Hell” without any “obstructions”. Praise “GOD”!!!

  13. But, but, but they can’t refuse him because of his color!

He’s, after all, a White male (or so he’s deluded himself into thinking).

    Hence his official portrait:

  14. What are you saying?
    Bobby is actually white?
He is as much of an oreo as justice Thomas.
In his crazy mind he is not only talking with god, he is acting white (or just entitled, like the other rich recent immigrants from India & the middle east that want to be in the USA, but have segregation and sexism and cheaper wages for their maids and workers as they have “back home”

  15. Welcome to the REAL reason that they want to take Jefferson off of the 20$ bill! It’s NOT about equality.

  16. “The white male is scared…..” Now you’re becoming as bad as they are. Don’t stereotype all white men with these republican religious bigots. Many of “those” white men stand firmly behind women’s and LGBT rights, and against such theocratic tyranny. And some non-whites, and females do not. They are proudly republican.

  17. Jindal isn’t even usable as a joke candidate anymore. The clown car passengers will be throwing trash at him as they drive by. Anti-gay measures? Have you ever seen the gay attendance at Mardi Gras, Bobby? That tourist money will be spent elsewhere if you sign the bill.

  18. I don’t think Jindal, unlike the two previous governors will backpedal on this anti-gay law, he’s proud to be a bigot, he believes it will benefit his presidential campaign. And perhaps it will in the Republican primaries. But it certainly won’t if he managed to win them. Most Americans are accepting of the LGBT community. And certainly wouldn’t want to vote for someone so odious.

  19. First of all, Jefferson is not on the $20 bill. That is Andrew Jackson. Second of all, what is not about equality?

  20. Did you see Bobby’ picture in the Louisiana state house?
You know Bobby’s not White, I know Bobby’s not White…. Somebody forgot to tell Bobby!

  21. The White Man and the White Male are two different species! The White Man has been seen protesting discrimination against persons of color! The White Male profits from it! The White Man stood in front of Custer and asked him the reason for genocide! The White Male was Custer! The White Man , fed up with the antics of the KKK declared war on the organization ! The White Male was the Grand Dragon that accidentally thought the white Man was joking!

  22. This is the same joker who said that volcano monitoring was a waste of money and called for the feds to stop paying for it. What would you expect from someone with an ambient temperature IQ?

  23. Question for the Governor – How will this effect the great Christian celebration of Louisiana, ya know, Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras, also called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday in English, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three King’s Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday.

Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”, reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

  24. Jindal is a lightweight who will soon be out of office, and as far as his WH quest: Are you kidding?! He has zero chance.

  25. Louisiana Marriage and Conscience Act looks like it was modeled after the English Conventicle Act of 1593, which among other things, discouraged nonconformism or anything that went contrary to the prevailing religious beliefs of that day.

Louisiana’s law is another example of elective despotism to impose the views of these branches of government on citizens in violation of citizens civil rights. Bills of Rights exist to prevent this type of despotism. They also exist to protect citizens from a despotism of a majority.

In Federalist Paper 48, James Madison wrote: “An ELECTIVE DESPOTISM was not the government we fought for.” The Louisiana legislature and Gov. Jindal loathe and detest American values and the views of our nation’s founders.

  26. As a gay man, I don’t know how much more of this I can take. I look back at the fight that black Americans and women had to make. If there is anything that turns one more away from God than the modern Christian church, I’d like to know what it is.

Satan has taken over the church.

  27. Ya’ know what Megan you’re correct! My bad, however I rarely have such small bills in my wallet so there ya’ go….

  28. Yea that is one of the biggest party s in New Orleans, just imagine, half the people don’t show up and spend their money because they are LGBT, and then another half of the tourist don’t show up, because they don’t believe in the hate, can you imagine, the $$$$ they will loose there?I cant wait to see the streets empty.

  29. First they came for the gays and I applauded because I don’t like gays. Then they came for the Muslims and I applauded because I don’t like Muslims. Who’s next?

  30. “Who’s next?”
Those who dislike gays and muslims.

If we can keep the forces of faux xtian evil at arms length long enough, they’ll eat each other instead of us, and we’ll be free of their fake piety, hatred, bigotry, hypocrisy, sexism, racism, ad infinitum……
