Boehner Tantrum Backfires As Pressure Grows On Republicans After Amtrak Wreck

john boehner cnn state of the union

Speaker of the House John Boehner tried to avoid a question about the role that Republican budget cuts played in the deadly Philadelphia Amtrak derailment by yelling at a reporter, but all Boehner accomplished was increasing the pressure on Republicans.

Rep. Boehner (R-OH) responded to a reporter who tried to ask about the role of Republican budget cuts by saying, “Are you really going to ask such a stupid question? Listen, you know, they started this yesterday, it’s all about funding; it’s all about funding. Well, obviously it’s not about funding. The train was going twice the speed limit. Adequate funds are there; no money’s been cut from rail safety and the House passed a bill earlier this spring to reauthorize Amtrak, and authorize a lot of these programs. And it’s hard for me to imagine that people take the bait on some of the nonsense that gets spewed around here.”

It appears that Boehner made things worse for Republicans with his outburst.

Sen. Chuck Schumer basically called out Boehner for lying, “Speaker Boehner’s comments are patently false. Experts have made clear that positive train control [technology] could have prevented the tragedy in Philadelphia. It is simply a fact that insufficient funding for Amtrak has delayed the installation of PTC, and to deny a connection between the accident and underfunding Amtrak is to deny reality.”

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA) replied to Boehner’s attempt to disconnect the facts, “You could certainly say that if you had positive train control, this wouldn’t have happened, and if you had enough funding … you would have put in positive training control already. You can certainly connect those two.”

By trying to distract from reality, John Boehner has increased the pressure on Republicans. Speaker Boehner’s behavior has raised more questions. If funding wasn’t an issue, why did the Speaker blow a gasket? Boehner’s blow up has put Republicans in a real bind. Instead of making the story go away, John Boehner has made things a whole lot worse.

  1. As if we needed any more proof that Conservatives hate America so very much! They hate America so much that they cannot stand to be called out for their insatiable hatred of all things that are good and proper in America.

Republicans in particular, and Conservatives in general- hate the Working Class, they hate the 99%, and they hate any notion that they have to act like a responsible adult.

  2. There are some reports that the PTC system was installed on this length of track. Also, it appears that it was operational on the Southbound side. It was turned off on the northbound side. PTC was also installed on the train itself. So, assuming this is true, are you going to correct this post and apologize for attempting to blame this rail accident on Republicans? Further, will you admit that it sounds more like a failure of the liberal run bureaucracy than anything else?

  3. Billions for the military industrial complex, but pennies for infrastructure? We’re reaping what we sowed because
ya get what you pay(or are not willing to)for.

  4. All of the networks want this fixed.

About a quarter of the political guests who show up on New York television take that train line.

  5. its even tougher to throw a tough guy temper tantrum and try to be taken seriously when you’re a well known squish and crybaby..

  6. Amtrak CEO says you are wrong.

“Many concur it is a shame positive train control wasn’t installed already in places such as Frankford Junction, the curve in the track where this week’s train crash happened. That includes Amtrak CEO Joseph Boardman.

“Had it been installed, it would have been prevented this accident,” the Amtrak chief told CNN’s Rene Marsh. “That’s what I’ve been saying for a long period of time.”

  7. There’s no doubt. The republicans have blood on their hands for this one. If the 2008 law dictates PTC be installed by December 2015, every single republican who cut funding is guilty of murder.

At least when they harm American institutions like the IRS, the Post Office, embassy security, no one dies.

  8. Obviously, Hillary will be blamed for the train accident. (1) The train was headed to New York….(2) Hillary lives in New York….case closed. What more proof does the GOP need for a Senate investigation? Defund an agency and then redirect blame for the fallout. Actions have consequences except for the GOP who are not responsible for ANYTHING.

  9. As usual, conservatives completely fail to have the obvious epiphany any sane person would have and instead double down and claim martyr status, as if calling them out is completely unjustified.

    Bra-VO, republicans.

  10. You are simply wrong – WRONG – WRONG!

It was NOT “turned off” – because it could NOT have been “turned off” – because it was NOT installed!

And the reason it was NOT installed on the northbound route is because Repubicans would NOT fund it.

“The Federal Railroad Administration twice sought extra funding from Congress to finance the technology for Amtrak and other commuter rails. A first request for $825 million was ignored. A second request for extra funding was made this year for the 2016 budget.

    “It was never funded.”

And we all know it was NOT funded because the GOP actually CUT Amtrak’s budget!

Like I said: You are wrong – WRONG – WRONG!

  11. Erica ~ Funding for the “route” did NOT occur. GOP denied funding it, twice. And, the sequester didn’t help that lack of funding at all.
My question is, why don’t they believe in maintaining our roads, bridges, & other infastructure. Where is the betterent of mankind versus the blantant greed for the 1%ers?

  12. I believe Mr. Boehner’s comment was arrogant and unprofessional. He gives us a true picture of  what a person can become when they are out of their element and “Shooting from the hip”. With his years of experience and years of campaigning for public office he should be able to handle himself better than that.
I have been a registered Republican for many years. These last few years have really bothered me. I have seen both parties dig in their heels and argue and fight over every item raised or change proposed.  We need our elected officials to remember they were elected by the people and should serve the people that elected them.
They need to review their job description get off their asses and perform the duties assigned. We have enough enemies and evil doers without our own elected officials adding more stumbling blocks.

  13. Instead of “there are some reports” perhaps posting links would be more convincing.

You truly need to stop watching FOX “you lose” News

  14. If the Republican controlled Congress would cut Military aid to other nations by 33%, there would be no reason for cutting funds meant for our infrastructure. Cut the overall military budget by 20% and there would be no need to cut funding for any federal program.

They won’t do this for one simple reason. No kick backs from the foreign military aid and less dividends from the military industrial complex.

Its time for the tax paying American public to stand up and demand the rebuilding of OUR nations infrastructure first.

  15. All that privatization, and government spending on infrastructure would give lie to the notion that the government can’t do anything.

Plus- it’d make Democrats look good.

  16. Republicans Killed the Amtrak Derailment Victims Speaker of the House John Boehner, who increasingly looks like he’s made of smoky phlegm coughed up by Mad Men characters, was asked yesterday if lack of federal funding for rail safety contributed to the deadly derailment of the Amtrak train in Philadelphia on Tuesday. With a look of the kind of contempt one gives a cat who just figured out how to get the fish out of the aquarium, he said, “Are you really going to ask such a stupid question?” – See more at:

  17. Amtrak wasn’t the only train wreck…it seems to me with ALL the burning, blowing ,crashes of trains, Someone really wants the “Keystone Pipeline “to pass. They figure if there are enough accidents?? deaths, they well have an advantage or an excuse to put it through. Watch for the next, NH<Maine and the midwest all have issues. NOW the big concern with the Dakotas is the long forgotten Missile Sights, you know , the one's aimed at Russia

  18. Because then they can claim that the government can’t do anything right, and that [fill in the blank] can be done better by private corporations because private corporations respond to the market with logic, reason, and only the very BEST interests of the public in mind (sarcasm off).

It’s a deliberate tactic: underfund, complain, privatize.

  19. The infrastructure in this country should be the number one priority congress needs to address. Our highways, bridges, and railroads are in needs of over due repair. Instead we are spending billions overseas, reducing benefits to individuals who need public assistance in purchasing basic food for their families, denying basic healthcare to the poor, particularly to the mentally ill.Members of Congress are paid pawns to the very wealthy. And I don’t see any candidate running in 2016, I can in good conscience vote for.

  20. So Erica ….are you going to admit you don’t know what the hell your talking about? If your right please point to the place your getting your info ….good luck! We’ll be waiting to the apology!

  21. Erica, I won’t call you a dumbass, I will however point out that using Fox’s “some people say” is an act of a dumbass.

  22. The whole 2 people that did not like the discussion are both idiots. Go to your Repub sites where you can be among your peers. OMG!

  23. I went from NY to Fl in 1958 on Amtrak. I was blown away. Clean cars, table cloths and waiters in the dining cars. It was like a high class hotel. I went again in 1989. The train looked just like it did in 1958! Only now, it was dirty and no fancy dining room. Also, the passenger trains had to give way to the freight trains. As usual, commerce comes before people. My son was stationed in Germany and was always raving about the European trains. What the hell has happened to this country?

  24. I too remember Train Travel as a Child.

We could do it again. Just like EUROPE. Japan Trains go 200 MPH!

**Fox Pushes For Privatization Of Amtrak**

    May 15, 2015

“Just two days after Fox’s Megyn Kelly and Chris Stirewalt attacked Democrats for politicizing the Amtrak crash by calling for more funding, Fox’s own Charles Gasparino pushed to privatize it”.

    That’s what THE GOP WANTS…

    THIS IS WHAT They Imagine….
***A Beautiful Bullet Train from Florida to NYC…ONLY FOR THE RICH***

    And Screw us…The Little People.

  25. You never went anywhere on Amtrack in 1958. You went on either Seaboard Airline or Atlantic Coastline. Amtrak was created by the Nixon Administration and ran good trains until the Reagan Administration. You could still get a good ride up and down the seaboard in 1992 in either the Meteor or the Star (The Champions had been taken off line before Amtrak, when Seaboard Airline and the Atlantic Coastline merged in 1967). The ultra-nice train you rode on in ’58 sounds like the Florida Special. They even gave you pink champagne.

  26. Larry, Are you aware of:
Retired U.S. Marine Corps Major General & two time Medal of Honor recipient Smedley D. Butler? He Wrote:

    WAR is a Racket.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small “inside” group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

    Read it all yourselves:

  27. Nice work Erica. Joe the fireman called you “crass.” After reading his post, I guess I don’t know what crass means.

  28. This whole thread is a colossal misdirection. Spend 18 trillion(this country doesn’t have) on infrastructure. Make Amtrak robot controlled. Throw that driver out of work. And all the other drivers, too. Just please, please, please, don’t have your robot controlled Amtrak train hit a 50mph stretch of track at 106 mph. It’s still not going to be pretty.

  29. Well, let’s see…

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have already cost us a couple of trillion dollars, with future expenses possibly bringing it up to over four trillion. Hrmmm. There’s a third right there.

Foreign aid to other countries is around fifty billion dollars a year. We could certainly cut aid to countries that don’t really need our financial and military assistance (coughIsraelcough).

Also, investing in a robust transportation system causes less wear and tear on roads, leading to a savings in cost there. It also reduces air pollution, which has economic benefits. Investment in rail also allows people to work, which brings economic benefit.

Oh. Another place we can get money: end subsidies for oil. Close corporate tax loops and end any tax benefits to any US company shipping its jobs overseas. Boom. Whole bunch of money right there.

Lastly…. the reason the train was ABLE to hit that curve at 106 mph was because the preventative equipment was not installed due to lac…

  30. Dumbass the reason it was not turned on was because it didn’t have frequencies that was needed for it to be turned on

  31. Posting the same shit does not make you smart. Seeing that you don’t know shit about what the system needed to work makes you a double dumbass

  32. Move the goal post? If they didn’t have the frequencies to make it work how is that moving the goal post. That’s like saying I have a car but the engine is missing so what good is that car

  33. The point is that arguing this was a funding issue caused by Republicans is absolutely laughable at this point. Blaming every conceivable reason why the PTC wasn’t operational on “lack of funding caused by Republicans” is pure magical thinking if you now extend it to FCC bandwith management. Also, after the hornet’s nest of retards attacked me for being wrong about the system being installed, including calling me a cunt, it’s pretty hard to declare victory over some minor detail that had nothing to do with funding. Why is it so hard to admit you are wrong?

  34. Oh, i see now that the moderators specifically allowed the C*** comment. That’s just fantastic, top notch site you have here.

  35. Perhaps you are capable of laughing at easily avoidable tragedies like Amtrak or 911, but there are us humans who choose to not do so.

Djfrechon is not wrong. You are.

  36. No, you are still wrong Wrong WRONG!

PTC was not – NOT – installed on the NORTHBOUND tracks.

“But Amtrak never installed the same electronics on the northbound side

“A federally mandated system intended to prevent crashes caused by operator error has not yet been installed in the [northbound] section of Amtrak’s tracks where this week’s derailment occurred.”

“Amtrak’s circuits … were protecting southbound trains at the Frankford Junction, but not northbound trains. Train 188 was headed north from Philadelphia to New York.”

  37. Yes, he didn’t technically call me a c***. So, as long as it’s not technically degrading it’s totally fine. Got it. That should be the new liberal motto: “Technically we don’t degrade women”.

This is why I am a conservative btw. Conservatives have real men, not weak lactating imbeciles like reynardine who drop C bombs on women for daring to disagree with them.

  38. Reading through Erica the Crybaby’s many time quoted google link:

    Many times mentioned:
whatever reason had not been turned on, the PTC in that section…
There have been delays in ‘turning it on’ associated with FCC dealings and getting the bandwidth to upgrade the radios…

In other words- funding. Which the Republicans have been bleeding out of our infrastructure to give already rich folks another tax cut.

    Speed limiters on trains?
The technology has existed for a long time. We have used it in Sweden since 1980 and it has greatly reduced the number of fatalities. In recent years one passenger died in 2010 and two in 1990.

    Amazing what googling can achieve.
    Suck it up Erica.

  39. Erica, I read your google link. You have two republican representatives saying PTC was installed. They are lying, as all republicans do.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Robert Sumwalt has made it extremely clear PTC was not installed and he has said that since Wednesday.

Here is his quote, “Based on what we know right now,” Sumwalt said, “we feel that had such a system been installed in this section of track, this accident would not have occurred.”

Why wasn’t it installed on this stretch of track?
“That’s going to be a key question. We want to find out,” Sumwalt told CNN’s “The Situation Room.” “Why was it in other areas … on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, but why was it not here?”

  40. Yes, he didn’t technically call me a c***. So, as long as it’s not technically degrading it’s totally fine. Got it

    Do you?

That’s the same reasoning (?) that Tea Baggers have been utilizing to degrade and dishonor our lawfully elected President Obama for years now.

And you have no problem with it so far.

But now that the shoe is on the other foot….

  41. No, Erica did shoddy w/ an article that quotes two GOP Congressmen as her “source”.

PTC was not – NOT – installed on the NORTHBOUND tracks from a GOOD GOOGLE search:

“But Amtrak never installed the same electronics on the northbound side

“A federally mandated system intended to prevent crashes caused by operator error has NOT yet been installed in the [northbound] section of Amtrak’s tracks where this week’s derailment occurred.”

“Amtrak’s circuits … were protecting southbound trains at the Frankford Junction, but NOT northbound trains. Train 188 was headed north from Philadelphia to New York.”

  42. I will agree with everything that the retired major general says, except for this – substitute the word “religion” wherever he uses the word “war”, and now you have the oldest, most profitable, most vicious racket ever perpetrated on the human race by their fellow humans.

  43. Is someone addicted to the boss’s approval?
He won’t fill your ego cup. He’d rather boost your pride.
Win your own approval. He’ll approve that.

  44. Tiger Joe, Bonehead is a classic example of Erica’s real men…along with turtle, walker, rubio. Then we have all the others who wave their hands under the walls in the biffy, those who are caught with their pants down. You, Know all the good conservative men. Good, God fearing men who are concerned with what Women do with their lives..

  45. The ONLY misdirection in this post is YOUR colossal straw man.

You know, ipse dixit may work for you at the right-wing blogs you frequent – but we like to rely on FACTS … they do have such a Liberal bias, don’t you know.

  46. Boy, you hate-mongering wingnuts really have a way with words.

You were epically proven wrong Wrong WRONG, so you resort to toddler tantrums.

Are you also going to hold your breath until you turn blue, or go with the classic of throwing yourself on the floor while kicking and screaming?

    Two words: GROW UP!
