America Is A Liberal Nation: For The First Time Social Liberals Outnumber Conservatives

obama and congressional liberals kill corporate tax cuts

For the first time since polling began in 1999, Gallup found that there are more social liberals in the United States than social conservatives.

Gallup reported that the number of respondents who called themselves social liberals has increased to 31%, while the number of self-identified social conservatives has fallen to 30%. The number of Democrats who refer to themselves as social liberals jumped from 47% in 2014 to 53% in 2015. The number of Republicans who call themselves socially conservative has declined from 60% in 2014 to 53% in 2015.

Democrats who used to call themselves social moderates are moving to the left while Republicans are experiencing a decline in social conservatives. The polling matches the overall trend in the country. America has moved left on same-sex marriage, equal pay for women, immigration, and climate change. Issues like the minimum wage and taxes have become both social and economic causes.

The United States is moving to the left. It has been inching leftward on social issues for decades, and the leftward trend is accelerating.

Republicans are nationally unpopular because they are out of step with the rest of the country. One of the main issues within the Republican Party is that candidates continue to pander to an increasing out of touch and shrinking base of social conservatives. The Democratic shift to the left on social issues is politically reflected in Hillary Clinton’s early moves to stake out liberal social positions after announcing her 2016 presidential candidacy.

The nation’s movement left is real and growing. The United States is becoming a socially liberal country, and Republican opponents of these changes are facing consistent defeat as our national leftward social evolution moves forward.

  1. This is good news, but if it doesn’t translate into more votes for Democrats it won’t help the country. The nation needs to lose the apathy and get out the vote! The choices for the next election should scare people enough to vote Democrat!

  2. The word Liberal, was at a time not too long ago, was used as An insult. You mean to say, us LIBERALs can now come out from under the cover we took? Finally free??
During all that time I used for a small amount of time, the word Progressive. Until I final decided to call my self a raging liberal, be damned with what people say or thought. I am a LIBERAL!!!

  3. I believe we have the Republican themselves to thank for this turnaround.

IMO people, in general, are not extremist and are finding the Republican’s positions on most everything is far, far too extreme for them to handle.

Of course this only works if people get out to vote. We need to show the Republicans that their extremist views are not acceptable. And those views are not what this country stands for.

  4. you’ll know when it’s a trend that’s really taken hold when ‘libtard’ is no longer a pejorative…

  5. The liberal “belief” of climate blame killing billions of innocent children in a catastrophic climate crisis was liberalism’s Iraq War of lies, exaggeration and fear mongering.
Were your science gods “allowed” to be more than 97% certain the planet wasn’t flat?
History is watching this crime against humanity.

  6. The Liberal “Reality” of climate will kill many.
There is no need for us Liberals to lie, we’re not Conservatives.

T’was Conservatives who asserted that the World was flat- as per your Bible.

If there are survivors of the climate change catastrophe- conservatives will be blamed for their Ostrich Like willful ignorance.

  7. Finally Americans have realized that a conservative polit-
itical philosophy only takes us backwards in a world that
devours weakness and timidity. Let freedom ring

  8. In the 30s, 40s, 50s and into the 60s Liberal was a proud label. in the 1890s through the 20s Progressive was a proud label. If someone called you a liberal you would be pleased. The Conservative “think tanks” created in the 70s deliberately attacked the word liberal and produced phrases like “tax and spend liberal.” That phrase is still used in elections to this day. I would hope people would finally begin to see through crap phrases like that, but I’m not holding my breath. Liberals have to be able to drive home the point that tax means levy heavy taxes on the rich and spend the money on desperately needed public goods. You know, the way it was when this nation was strong.

  9. Take a deep breath!
Enjoy the moment of liberalism majority…

Then get busy fighting those hideous GPO governors who are gutting the education system and the social reforms & services while we were sleeping.

  10. No, our scientists were not allow to say anything other than the earth was flat and that the sun circled the earth because YOUR religion would not allow them to tell the truth.

Just as you refuse to believe that unless we do something, and damn fast, that climate change will kill millions because of war and famine.

You go ahead and live in your little dream world that nothing bad is going to happen. When the starving come to raid your house for food and/or water, what are you going to say then?

  11. During Nam in the 7th grade I got on stage and debated against the war for our Social Studies class panel.

I was called a commie for years. But by graduation everybody was wearing peace signs. I still have the autograph books with my friends calling me commie and drawing mini tanks and guns on their signed “good wishes” page.

I was a registered dem, the right pissed me off so I registered in NY as Liberal party for years after.

I wore it as a badge of honor. Some things never change.

  12. ummm… wouldn’t that be a sexist assumption to assume only a woman would wear one?

it might depend on the makeup and heels for a guy…

no war on women here… [WINK]

  13. I will have to go look for it but during the BUSH administration there was a very large climate study and it involved the Pentagon (it was around 35 pages long if I remember correctly) and it said CLIMATE is a THREAT to our security.

Those Bush people knew it too.

Yawn, old news. I will see if I can find it on the Bush Administration White House archives.

  14. Please take off your tin-foil hat and get an education. Your failure to recognize what 97% of scientists have PROOF of is climate change and will eventually kill you.
Conservatism is a dying philosophy since the majority of the prosperious countries adhire to a DEMOCRATIC-SOCIALISM form of government.
We know conservatives are very fearful of change.
Here is the form of government meaning and don’t be frightened, we’re not going to be turned into China which adds a dictator to the mix.

“Democratic socialism is a political ideology advocating a democratic political system alongside a socialist economic system, involving a combination of political democracy with social ownership of the means of production.”

  15. very proud to be a LIBERAL since 1980 and have never voted republican, even though my parents were Eisenhower republicans.

  16. I believe its a generational thing and does not bode well for the future of the GOP. Their most faithful followers are dying off

  17. No. Male dancers wear an elastic jock strap called a dance belt, and the tights are worn over it. They may or may not wear anything on top. Female dancers wear knit underwear, the tights over that, and the leotard over that. Learn something about dance attire, please.

  18. There are many democrats in offices large and small throughout the land who are still fighting for little advances. We have been asking for the same principles, the same issues for as long as injustice has reared its head.

They are often beaten down, and as DJ recalled for us, some of them took “it is off the table” attitudes and stances when we had the chance to accomplish much.

We can do a great deal with double terms back to back. Think of the opposite happening in the Reagan – Bush forever term of straight horror before Bill.

Then think of what if the gains we have made under 8 years of Obama aren’t turned over to them, as is the rule for 8 years, and we win instead?

16 years of working towards peace and prosperity would be a boon to this nation.

We have the ball, we need to run with it.

All the way. Don’t fall. Keep going. Don’t look back. They are wrong and we must shout them down till they are gone.

Every last insect R out there. Gone.

  19. for Reynardine…

ummm… living in the Bay Area I’m pretty sure I know how its sometimes worn by males…

  20. Oh and mememine, after you read the Bush report from the Pentagon about how climate change will destroy us… make sure you vote for Dems who have tried to save your sorry ass.

The Bush White House used to have direct links to it. It was common knowledge among those of us fighting endlessly to save you and your future world.

    You are welcome, ingrate.

  21. I don’t think the far-left “progressives” should be allowed to use the word “liberal” to describe themselves. They have gone so far around the bend, they are often indistinguishable from the Tea party. I call them “Tea Party Left.”

  22. And what cases do you justify that remark?

I’ve yet to read of any ‘progressives’ being as rabidly anti-President Obama as the The Tea Baggers.

  23. I have always been a liberal and proud of it. Don’t let others define you. It gives them too much power. If others have a problem with liberals, too bad. Everything we stood for is being accepted now but we won’t gloat. Just enjoy it.

  24. I’m proud to be a liberal because the goals of liberalism are better suited to what a human being is.

We should care about and for our fellow man. Everyone deserves a chance to become happy, wealthy and be successful in life. Everyone deserves a chance to get a great education. To say that caring about our fellow man or being able to be successful or even getting a chance to get a good education is ‘socialism’ or ‘communism’ is so wrong that you kind of feel sorry for these people that have brainwashed into this thinking.

As an American, this time is a great time for us Liberals. We need to keep that momentum going because the country could use another great era of Liberalism.

  25. I find it hauntingly disturbing that NOBODY ever took the time to point out that while their may have been “tax and spend” liberals, the conservs and repubs usually “borrow and spend”, or simply spend. Amazing how the “fiscal conservatives” keep growing government and the Federal deficit while those “tax and spend” liberals keep balancing the budget despite the massive screwups they inherit.

  26. They voted for Nixon TWICE thinking they were getting another Eisenhower, oops. My mother had me stay home from school to watch his inauguration in January 1969.

Then they voted for Reagan since we lived thru his “governorship” in CA, however the eventual ruining of CA didn’t kick in until the mid-80’s. We were the guinea pigs for his trickle-down which wasn’t working but he foisted it on the rest of the U.S. as president.

  27. John F. Kennedy quotes

“If by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties-someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal”, then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.”

“The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.”

“Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

  28. Eisenhower was a liberal cloaked as a republican since he taxed the SHIT out of the wealthy and corporations.

  29. FDR quotes:

“Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.”

“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”

“A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people. ”

“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.”

“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling pr…

  30. Andy, great post!

Thanks so much. People refer to “libs” or “liberals” like it is a dirty word. Well, it is not a dirty word, it is a good word.

For the baggers on this post, educate yourself about what a liberal is..

  31. California is a good example

’59-’67 Pat Brown was tax and spend
’67-’75 Ronald Reagan was slash taxes, but borrowed and spent
Where do you think our state debt came from?
It took until ’11-15 and now ’15-’19 Jerry Brown II to get us on the correct footing with a budget surplus so now we can pay down the debt.

The legacy of California liberal governor Pat Brown 1959 – 1967
    Pat Brown’s legacy includes
Fair Housing act, Fair Employment Act, Master Plan for Higher Education, Highway Expansion, The California Aqueduct
Pat Brown taxed everyone, citizens and corporations, fairly
Due to his legacy, California public schools were the envy of the nation, then came governor Reagan in ‘67….and prop 13 in ‘79

  32. I admire JFK and was born during his presidency, I’m proud to say I’M A LIBERAL.

Aberham Lincoln was a progressive (liberal) republican, who abolished slavery

Teddy Roosevelt was a progressive (liberal) republican, who outlawed the monopolies

Dwight Eisenhower was a progressive (liberal) republican, who taxed the SHIT out of the wealthy and corporations which build the interstate highway system we still use today.

  33. The job of the government IS ‘tax and spend.’ collect taxes, spend them on infrastructure. That and regulate industry so citizens don’t get screwed

  34. This is the most spot on, succinct response, and one that I have felt but never verbalized. “Borrow and spend”. “Just Spend.” Brilliant. I will be using those points slogans in the future. Thank you.

  35. I remember when George Dukakis ran for president the republicans labeled him “a card-carrying ‘liberal.'”

One of the best definitions of “liberal” was articulated by John F. Kennedy in his Acceptance Speech of the New York Liberal Party Nomination on September 14, 1960:

“…if by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a ‘Liberal,’ then I’m proud to say I’m a ‘Liberal.'”

  36. Andy in CA. You are right. I was in college when you were born so I nave been a proud liberal for a long time.

Have you ever heard of the Powell Memorandum? Read it as that document is when the country starting going to hell with Right Wing Think Tank heaven.

Powell was rewarded by being appointed as a SCOTUS Associate Justice.

    Will wonders ever cease?

  37. Anne B. Sad to say but I voted for Tricky in 1960 over JFK which is when I first became eligible to vote. Why? I was a crib republican and was enrolled in the College of Business. But since I liked the economics Profs better when taking required econ courses, I changed to the College of Arts and Sciences declaring a history minor. The more I learned about the world in economics and history classes, the more I became convinced I should vote democrat. I haven’t voted for a republican since. Even though I have an MBA, I still vote straight democrat.

  38. The one fact in this poll as a liberal that has me the most excited is that registered Republicans are becoming less inclined to call themselves conservative.

I’ve always suspected the base of the Democratic party tilted liberal, but to truly change our nation we need to bring the GOP to the center.

Anyone old enough to remember the term Liberal Republican? Those we’re the senators and congressman that compromised with democrats to build up our once great domestic infrastructure.

Margaret Chase Smith was one great Liberal Republican who helped pass the interstate highway bill that opened up our economy(I-95).

  39. Oh that’s easy to figure out. The Republican health care system and their Pre Existing Conditions is killing off the conservatives.
