Bernie Sanders Rips The Hearts Out Of Republicans By Debuting A Real Family Values Agenda

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is taking back family values from the Republican Party by unveiling his Family Values Agenda. The Sanders agenda calls for ten days of guaranteed paid vacation for employees who have worked for an employer for at least a year, and 12 weeks of universally paid family and medical leave.

At a Capitol Hill news conference, Sen. Sanders went after Republicans on family values:

When my Republican colleagues talk about “family values,” what they usually mean is opposition to a woman’s right to choose, opposition to contraception, opposition to gay rights. Let me today give a somewhat different perspective on family values – on real family values.

When a mother has a baby and is unable to spend time with that child during the first weeks and months of that baby’s life, and is forced back to work because of a lack of money, that is not a family value. That is an attack on everything that a family is supposed to stand for. When a wife is diagnosed with cancer and a husband cannot get time off of work to take care of her, that is not a family value. That is an attack on everything that a family is supposed to stand for. When a mother is forced to send her sick child to school because she cannot afford to stay home with her that is not a family value. That is an attack on everything that a family is supposed to stand for. When a husband, wife, and kids, during the course of an entire year, are unable to spend any time together on vacation – that is not a family value. That is an attack on everything that a family is supposed to stand for.

Sen. Sanders’ agenda is centered around two pieces of legislation, “Senator Sanders’ Guaranteed Paid Vacation Act would provide 10 days of paid vacation for employees who have worked for an employer for at least one year. This legislation would make sure workers have access to minimum vacation benefits that most companies already offer to their white-collar, high-salary workers. The Act would apply to employers with at least 15 employees….Workers in the United States should have at least 12 weeks of universal paid family and medical leave. The FAMILY Act introduced by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand does just that. This bill, which Sen.Sanders is co-sponsoring, allows mothers and fathers to receive 12 weeks of paid family leave to care for a baby. It also allows workers to take the same amount of paid time off if they are diagnosed with cancer or have other serious medical conditions or to take care of family members who are seriously ill.”

For decades, Republicans have been calling themselves the party of family values while carrying out an ideological agenda that weakens and undermines the economic security of the nation’s families. Republicans oppose any steps that would strengthen families. Studies have found that the more money a couple makes, the less likely they are to divorce. Economic stability increases family stability.

When a worker has to place economic survival ahead of their family, the family suffers. Republicans have gotten away with disguising their family killing policies as values for too long.

Conservatives hijacked the term family values, but Bernie Sanders is taking it back.

  1. Bring us to at least some of the rest of the Civilized World? What a concept.

Naturally Republicans will be fiercely against it; being that it helps working folks without giving the Rich another tax break.

  2. When EVER the Reich Wing says “Family Values” they mean Duggar family values, Duck Dynasty family values etc. How can a political party like the Republicans claim family values when the Republicans have no use for anything of real value like TRUTH.

  3. The Evangelicals and the corporations plans to take over the world by pushing their hate agenda against anything that it is not what they perceive to be the “real family values”.

The needs of the working stiff of the Nation, who are the real producers of wealth with their labor, need to be given a share of the benefits.

Thank you Mr Bernie for bringing this up!

  4. When Corporatism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag while carrying a cross..and a spreadsheet.

  5. Bernie is sincere in wanting to help Americans. And he has sound ideas that are in place in many other countries and have been for years.

Unfortunately, a good portion of the country is still waiting for that trickle to come flowing down from the mountaintop. Fools, all of them.

  6. I love the agenda, but I have to say that I disapprove of the way the article is written.
I have learned that disparaging Republicans (even when justified) gets you nowhere! It will only push those voters that we desperately NEED to hear Bernie Sanders message farther away, and puts them on the defensive. Then they won’t listen at all!
I would love to share this message, but I want to share it in a way that draws those voters toward us rather than antagonize them.
We Democrats have got to be “the heroes” in this situation and do everything we can to stop the hate speech.

  7. LOL @Joesph, I think that phrase was meant for the ”fascist,” but unfortunately within the last 40 yrs it’s damn hard to separate the corporations from the fascist!! I realize that everyone isn’t going to agree with many of my post because I’m pissing off the republican TROLL brigade that just can’t tear themselves away from POLITICUS! and that “SOME” caucasian liberals have a heart attack on how I deal with LILY WHITE republicans!! Bottom line! I want america to start acting like a DAMN super power! and I want this ANGRY- mostly SOUTHERN- LILY WHITE republican- anti american nonsense to stop! This racism is destroying us! Bernie Sanders is APART of the answer! I can HONESTLY say, he’s what america should strive for! being a good HONEST human being! BTW I “LIKE” Hilary Clinton but I’m NOT a DAMN FOOL either! Hilary was just fine with ALL that racist BULL$HIT she threw at Obama in 2007, REMEMBER the, “OBAMA CAN GET ME ALL CUP OF COFFEE” JAB! yeah ok Hilary

  8. Like Bernie too Knight4444,If he wins he will get my vote. However, if Hillary wins she will also get my vote. Simply because I do not want a rethug to win the White House. Bottom line is Dem’s must win and big…..

  9. K4444:

Not all the racist are White, racism is inside people of many different shades & cultural values.

Most unfortunate, is that the religion part that moves many good people into a group that is manipulated to work against their own interest.

  10. @Gsb, I’m with you! I’ll vote for Hilary if the Sanders campaign waves the white flag, all I’m saying is lets stop this BULL$HIT that Hilary is some raging WILD EYED LIBERAL! she’s NOT! and Bill Clinton was even more of a centerist democratic than Obama is! And that’s saying something! Bernie Sanders is what america COULD BE! SHOULD BE!! BTW just watch how Sanders will campaign, he won’t act like a mad dog and start throwing other democrats under the bus like HILARY did! REMEMBER when BILL told Ted Kennedy, Obama shouldn’t be taken seriously, because a few years ago this guy would have been carrying my bags! JUST SAYIN’

  11. The more Senator Bernie Sanders speaks the closer I listen. After being disillusioned by the lack of interest my California representatives showed in communicating with me I heard Bernie Sanders speaking on a video and that did it for me. Since then (early last year) Sen. Sanders is the only Representative I communicate with. He has all of us in mind, not just particular groups. His passion when he rails against the turnip-faced criminals of Congress is stirring and powerful. He carefully chooses his words so as not to offend and he has said he will not run a negative campaign. The debate above wasn’t a negative campaign trick. It was honesty at its finest level.

  12. Yes knight444 I know. I just updated it and used some quotes from Benito Mussolini. Ol’Beno said Fascism should be called Corporatism because it combines government and corporations. I used the base quote “When fascism comes to this country it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a bible. Than Ol’ Ronnie Ray-gun for that. What the Reich wing has done is take Fascism, Nationalism, Corporatism Dominionism and wrapped it up in an American flag and using Fox News as their 24/7/365 mal-infomercial to sell it to the mushrooms that watch them and take orders from. And we who know this and reject it are labeled whatever their peezy little minds can conjure.

  13. That would be vote buying.

The real money issue in politics is candidates promising large groups of voters government benefits and services to be paid for by other smaller groups of voters.

  14. You must not be paying attention. Riddle me this what have the 1% been doing in order to further their interest? Damn dumfukery runs amuck

  15. the Republican Party’s family values program is much like the story of the Emperor with no clothes-behind all the rhetoric they spin is the naked truth-nothing of substance exists that helps the people.

  16. I badly wanted to share this article with my facebook friends, probably most of whom are Republicans, but the title “RIPPING THE HEARTS OUT…” didn’t strike me as being the best way to reach them.

  17. I know that this seems obvious, but if anyone really wants to see Bernie Sanders have a chance to enact this act or push his agenda it’s important for you to participate in your caucus or primary. Please vote and don’t assume that others will do this for you.

  18. Im convinced they mean Koch family values or Koch net worth and how much they will be contributing to their next campaign. Got to make money for the donor.

  19. I made very similar comments, but apparently it’s still going through the approval process.
By degrading the Republicans we merely push them away!
We MUST all unite for this common cause! Bernie is for ALL of the middle-class, not just Dems!

  20. I’m not the one who moderated that comment, and I don’t know who did, but I don’t consider myself authorized to override them.

  21. Holy crap, thanks for linking this. I’ve been aware of much of the Koch dealings in recent years, as well as their “convention of states” which seeks to dismantle the constitution. But I had no idea of their historical ties other than David’s platform when he ran for vice president. This is some really good stuff, complete with many referenced sources.

It’s hard not to sound crazy when you talk about this kind of thing, but the evidence is there clear as day. Their blatant in-your-face spending on politics, and their historical ties, as well as the platform they push… I don’t know how anyone still doesn’t understand how big of a deal it is that they’re so involved with the political process.

  22. I ran across a piece on a youtube video screen after watching it on Politicus. It was Lewis Farakan, he spoke of the plan to takeover the US by some interesting rich cult members, in one statement of the intent, is the jewish state came up in this endeavor also. That link Shane, I’m thinking all along, something else was happening in this country besides the black guy in the whitehouse. I’m a long way from being a conspiracy nut. I’ll post the link when I find it. I”ve posted before that something else was going on the legislatures in this country, with intent to take over government functions and create a thirdworld country, Prez Obama just got in their way. You might give some attention to Roddy Piper when he discovered the truth about rich folk being aliens.

  23. I was old enough to vote when Ronnie Ray-Gun (I love when people remember the 60’s and Ronnie was called that) was first elected president. I hadn’t voted, and I swore I would vote every election since then, and have kept that promise. I would take my kids with me to the polling booth and make sure they knew how important it was to vote for EVERY election!

  24. Thank you for your uninformed opinion, theresae66! And, that’s not sarcasm. I am a Democrat and very much believe in family values. I took care of my mother her last 4 years on this planet. She was bedridden and very ill. We could have easily put her in a home, but we didn’t. We kept her at home. I took care of my parents’ home ~ did their wash every week ~ watched over my brother who has cerebral palsy. No family values there, right? And, then I spent the next year and a half watching out for my daddy. He spent the last 6 weeks in a hospital after an accident. I was there EVERY DAY. Please! Get off your Republican high horse.

  25. You werent for the death penalty, denying healthcare and food to people so yes, you commie democrat you have no family values

  26. I read this article and thought, “There is no way a rational human-being could possibly turn this stance into a negative, but I’m sure some irrational partisan troll is gonna try.” So I decided to check the comments…. was not disappointed.

So BRAVO! You are a veritable Mary Lou Retton of mental gymnastics. Your comment is ridiculous and logically flawed and petty, but I have to give it a 10 out of 10 for creativity…. Well-done!

  27. Candy is dandy
    Liquor is quicker
But incest is best– it’s the game the whole family can play!

…No, we’re not about *those* family values.

  28. The history of the American Kochs is accurate, as far as it goes. There is nothing to connect them to Ilse Kohler Koch or her husband.

Koch is neither a rare name nor an exalted one. It means, “cook”, and denotes families descended from hundreds, perhaps thousands, of those who followed this humble occupation in wealthier houses. Most Kochs are not related to each other. And, however evil each may be, neither are these two families.

The supportable facts are frightening enough. Allowing canards like this to swim muddily in an otherwise clear pond gives plain truth the appearance of fabrication.

  29. Two year old article on the Koch brothers. If they are “dark money” what do you call George Soros’ money? How about looking up Soros’ role in WWII. It ain’t pretty, either.

As a Republican, I’m fine with Bernie Sanders’ proposal for the family. I would like, however, to read the ENTIRE deal, to see what else is in there. Congress can’t seem to come up with simple approach to anything. Every bill seems to have a chapter slipped in that is a poison pill for a large group somewhere.

Agriculture bill has a huge Food Stamp issue. Gets voted down. R’s take the hit for being haters and not caring about the poor.

Same thing with the infrastructure amendment Sen. Sanders proposed in March. It got shot down because it would have messed up the tax code. The Dems COULD have fixed these and other matters when they controlled everything a few years ago. They didn’t. Why? So they can point at Republicans and accuse them of being the boogie men.

  30. Appropos billindallas.

    Bullshit.

The Republicans have had years in which to propose something that actually helps the poor, without attaching yet another tax break or corporate welfare giveaway to such.

Which you’re quite well aware of.

    Bob.

  31. First of all the reason you thugs took the hit on food stamps was while you took food out of people mouths you enriched yourselves like the pigs you are with farm subsidies for life.

And second of all about the infrastructure amendment that you say was block because it would mess up the tax code, Before you speak you should know WTF you are talking about. This is the tax loophole you people blocked preventing millions of jobs: The tax loopholes targeted by Sanders’ amendment let corporations and wealthy Americans shift jobs and profits overseas, often to offshore tax havens like the Cayman Islands. Nearly $100 billion is lost annually to offshore tax dodging, according to the U.S. Treasury

Turn off fox and turn on your brain

  32. We’ve not pushed Republicans away, they’ve left long ago.

30 odd years of Rush Limbaugh like denigration has been enough.

Now we stand up to such and suddenly the calls are for US to stop being mean- back.

  33. Joseph is actually correct in calling the ‘Fascist’ movement ‘Corporatist’. Benito Mussolini, the leader of the Italian Fascist Party said:
“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power”

  34. I would like to take a moment and give my appreciation. Thank you for being valiant and reporting on Bernie Sanders! Most corporate run media are attempting to silent Bernie Sanders. He is one of the only politician actually taking an American stand on American issue. He is not being run by super PACs or big business.

  35. I wrote a long message to agree with you but someone didn’t like my style and knocked me off. What we need most is everyone in and fully accepted because the Constitution requires it. This will make us very strong and stronger over time. Next we need all of the money influence out of politics. We need to abolish both parties because they are employing the war tactic of “conquer and divide” – If they can keep Dems and Reps fighting each other (like a couple started a big row with me yesterday just because I said I like Obama) they hope we will be so busy hating on each other we won’t notice what they are doing to us all. Bernie is the best thing to come along since sliced bread – just what we need and when we need it – Go Bernie I’m behind you all the way. Many millions already know Bernie is who we’ve been waiting for, they just don’t know it is him YET – but they will soon. He is running as a Dem because that’s the only way he can get a path in. BUT – he is an “Independent” we n…

  36. Bernie, an Independent is just what we need to show both parties how disgusted we are with them all. Bernie is running as a democrat because he has no other way in. An “Independent” – what a blessing at the right time so the two parties can “divide and conquer” us no more. Many people on all sides will see Bernie’s wisdom and love it and join in.

  37. I am an old f*rt so let me share some wisdom. First NEVER trust a politician -ever! With that being said, I’ll stand up for Bernie. He will still wheel and deal just like the rest of them (it is part of the job)but the man has the best intrest of the people, all the people in mind. There is barely a middle class any more. You either have money or you don’t. If you go to school it can take twenty years to pay off, so you are poor. If you make enough money to pay it off then you try to keep what you have left. If you are retired like me, then you scrape by on what little pension you get from the 9 to 5 job 30 years ago. The simple fact is things have to change. Women have the same rights as men. Kids need their parents. Families need hope.

Students need hope. To start a small business you need to have a dream. You can’t dream if you can’t pay the rent.

Big money throws money at the agenda they want. They are not people. We are. I’ll vote for Bernie!

  38. OK, So a lot of people are liking Bernie Sanders. Do you want a progressive in the white house? Are you sick of the media propaganda telling us who a “Front Runner” is (Hillary?). Then we need to HACK THE SYSTEM BY USING IT!!! GET OUT THE PROGRESSIVE PRIMARY VOTE!!!! If a progressive candidate wins the primary by a wide margin over any other candidate then the DNC will have no choice but, to nominate them. This is how our system works, the primary is the gate way to the general. I believe our country is ripe for a progressive president. Stop listening to the media tell us who a “Front Runner” is. We The People decide that through the primary vote. Spread the word.
