NBC Tries To Destroy MSNBC By Shipping Brian Williams Off To The Struggling Cable Channel

It looks like NBC is intentionally trying to destroy MSNBC as the network has demoted Brian Williams from evening news anchor to breaking news/special reports anchor at MSNBC.

NBC said in a statement:

Lack and Steve Burke, CEO of NBCU, have decided that Williams will not be the anchor of Nightly News. Williams, who was an anchor at MSNBC from 1996 to 2004, will now join MSNBC as anchor of breaking news and special reports. He will work with Mark Lukasiewicz, SVP of Special Reports for NBCU News Group, who will help lead a team to strengthen MSNBC’s daytime coverage by further leveraging NBC News’ expertise in breaking news. In addition, Williams will serve as a breaking news anchor for NBC News live special reports when Holt is not available. He will begin the new role in mid-August.

The extensive review found that Williams made a number of inaccurate statements about his own role and experiences covering events in the field. The statements in question did not for the most part occur on NBC News platforms or in the immediate aftermath of the news events, but rather on late-night programs and during public appearances, usually years after the news events in question.

After watching the complete debacle that was the cable news networks waiting hours to go fully live with the coverage of the shootings in Charleston, SC, it will be nice to see an actual news anchor on MSNBC after 2 PM.

Brian Williams also released a statement that expressed his desire to win back trust, “I’m sorry. I said things that weren’t true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and I’m determined to earn back their trust. I will greatly miss working with the team on Nightly News, but I know the broadcast will be in excellent hands with Lester Holt as anchor. I will support him 100% as he has always supported me. I am grateful for the chance to return to covering the news. My new role will allow me to focus on important issues and events in our country and around the world, and I look forward to it.”

NBC admits that Williams lied, but since he didn’t lie about the news while it was happening or during a news broadcast, they decided not to fire him. To put it mildly, these are some seriously stretched ethics. MSNBC could definitely use a legit news talent infusion, but the fact that the network sent Williams there as punishment speaks volumes about how the people in charge view their struggling cable channel.

MSNBC is a mess, and adding Brian Williams may make things worse.

If NBC cared about the future, they would rebuild MSNBC into a real liberal network, drop the hosts that are killing the ratings, and make a real commitment to their viewers.

It has gotten to the point where it looks like NBC is trying to kill off MSNBC by saddling them with the damaged Williams. MSNBC already has a Joe Scarborough problem, and a Chris Hayes problem (nobody’s watching), so now they’ve added Brian Williams to the mix. If NBC is trying to destroy the “Lean Forward” network, they are doing a great job.

  1. his first story will be his first person account of what it was like coming under fire in the South Carolina church while praying to get his job back…

  2. You guys are nuts. Your attempt to destroy is overwhelming. Brian is lived by millions. Yeah, he over stated his war experience, so WHAT. Many do, just ask O’Rillie.
As for MSNBC, it went to hell when they fired Keith and Martin. Keith donates a $1,000 to a candidate, and is canned. George over on ABC donates $75,000, and all is good. What a joke NBC is.

  3. He embellished a story and I still like and trust Brian Williams.

Is there a “journalist” at Faux with these awards??
Is there even a journalist at Faux??
“He has received eleven Edward R. Murrow Awards, twelve Emmy Awards, the duPont-Columbia University Award, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism and the industry’s highest honor, the George Foster Peabody Award. ”

  6. Has anyone at Faux had this experience?

“In 2004, he took over as anchor of NBC Nightly News, the nation’s top-rated nightly news program, a distinction it has maintained throughout Williams’ tenure in the anchor chair. Two years later, Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world”

“Williams’ coverage of world events has earned him high praise and several citations for journalistic excellence, many of which were awarded for his work covering Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The New York Times said his reporting of Katrina was “a defining moment,” and Vanity Fair later called his work “Murrow-worthy” and reported that during the crisis he became “a nation’s anchor.” He has covered numerous presidential campaigns, nominating conventions, and elections, and has moderated eight presidential debates. ”

  7. You are absolutely right, Les. Keith was the very best they had. And Martin, what a crock. Those were two I always watched and looked forward to. I really like Chris Hayes on his weekend show. When I heard they were ‘promoting’ him to prime time, I was angry. He was unique and interesting on Sat and Sun morning. He was boring and ordinary at 8:00 every evening.

Getting disappointed with Rachel Maddow who I absolutely loved. She is constantly repeating herself and last night gave over nearly half the program to Donald Trump. If anybody isn’t newsworthy it is Donald Trump.

I am being drawn back to CNN, especially in the morning. Morning Joe, which I liked years ago, has declined into just his personal ego trip. Yuck.

  8. I dunno.. trying to rationalize Brian Williams behavior because he’s likeable or comparing him to O’reilly and Fox news is using the wrong journalistic standard…

he should be compared to Edward Murrow, Cronkite, Huntley-Brinkley or even Brokaw…

trying to use the ‘look what I did before’ defense is what I call the Don Imus defense when he made the crack about the ladies basketball team… his defense was don’t judge me for that look at all the good stuff I’ve done like my ranch for the cancer kids…

I want to trust my news source not wonder which part is being made up…

  9. Hey……I like Chris Hayes !!!!! Perhaps he is too intelligent for most people. You keep running MSNBC down and all that will be left is “faux noise” and CNN. You would think Brian Williams would have enough $ to retire.

  10. I like Chris Hayes. He doesn’t let his guests get away with lying. I don’t understand why nobody’s watching his show.

  11. Fox News lies to its audience 24/7 and no one gives a crap about their mis represenstion of the facts. Williams made a couple of exaggerations that really had no impact on his viewers. Williams got a raw deal. Oh, by the way, Bill O’Riley’s numerous exaggerations were dropped like a six inch putt and his position is still secure.

  12. People should understand, lies are what the FOX audience wants to hear, O’Reilly is spouting the hate and lies that the haters feed on, no way will they get rid of him!

  13. I enjoy watching MSNBC. I like the evening line up & watch it later at night as I don’t have the chance to see it earlier.

I don’t enjoy Morning Joe so I don’t watch it.

  14. This assertion that NBC is trying to “destroy” MSNBC is at best piffle! Jason, you have it all wrong. Tell me this Jason, do you think for one second that ANYONE on Fox news would EVER own up to ANYTHING they have done wrong!? NO! they have never and never will. MSNBC may be not as left leaning as we would like but they are all we have as a balance for the Goebbels Channel and Constant Negative News. NBC is doing the best they can against the raging bullshit machine that is Fox News and the insanity of the Reich Wing Media. Brian Williams IS a trustworthy man who has embraced his mistake and learned from it. The Goebbels Channel and the staff have NO integrity! they have NO honesty and they back up their employees lies and insanity to the hilt. The Goebbels channel blames EVERYONE else for their lies! They play the victim when they victimize others. NBC and MSNBC have NEVER done this.

  15. MSNBComcast doesn’t need any help at self-destruction. As it’s ratings attest, it’s doing a good job of crashing and burning on its own. Is O’Reilly hurting Faux News? Then why should Williams do any further damage to MSNBComcast?

And really, who cares? When we tune into MSNBComcast we are looking for a news alternative to the conservative echo chamber that is Faux News. Not for breaking news. That’s what HLN news is for, and what CNN attempts to do. Why not split up the small market share instead of go for #1?

We have an election coming up and if there is no voice for progressives on TV, MSNBC’s ratings will continue to crash, leaving the airwaves to conservative politicians, conservative legislation, and the Koch agenda.

If MSNBComcast management can’t figure out a way to raise ratings by appealing to progressives, democrats, and indies around the country, it’s time to look at management and its mission, and re-invent the programming to appeal to a specific targe…
