NBC Tries To Destroy MSNBC By Shipping Brian Williams Off To The Struggling Cable Channel

It looks like NBC is intentionally trying to destroy MSNBC as the network has demoted Brian Williams from evening news anchor to breaking news/special reports anchor at MSNBC.

NBC said in a statement:

Lack and Steve Burke, CEO of NBCU, have decided that Williams will not be the anchor of Nightly News. Williams, who was an anchor at MSNBC from 1996 to 2004, will now join MSNBC as anchor of breaking news and special reports. He will work with Mark Lukasiewicz, SVP of Special Reports for NBCU News Group, who will help lead a team to strengthen MSNBC’s daytime coverage by further leveraging NBC News’ expertise in breaking news. In addition, Williams will serve as a breaking news anchor for NBC News live special reports when Holt is not available. He will begin the new role in mid-August.

The extensive review found that Williams made a number of inaccurate statements about his own role and experiences covering events in the field. The statements in question did not for the most part occur on NBC News platforms or in the immediate aftermath of the news events, but rather on late-night programs and during public appearances, usually years after the news events in question.

After watching the complete debacle that was the cable news networks waiting hours to go fully live with the coverage of the shootings in Charleston, SC, it will be nice to see an actual news anchor on MSNBC after 2 PM.

Brian Williams also released a statement that expressed his desire to win back trust, “I’m sorry. I said things that weren’t true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and I’m determined to earn back their trust. I will greatly miss working with the team on Nightly News, but I know the broadcast will be in excellent hands with Lester Holt as anchor. I will support him 100% as he has always supported me. I am grateful for the chance to return to covering the news. My new role will allow me to focus on important issues and events in our country and around the world, and I look forward to it.”

NBC admits that Williams lied, but since he didn’t lie about the news while it was happening or during a news broadcast, they decided not to fire him. To put it mildly, these are some seriously stretched ethics. MSNBC could definitely use a legit news talent infusion, but the fact that the network sent Williams there as punishment speaks volumes about how the people in charge view their struggling cable channel.

MSNBC is a mess, and adding Brian Williams may make things worse.

If NBC cared about the future, they would rebuild MSNBC into a real liberal network, drop the hosts that are killing the ratings, and make a real commitment to their viewers.

It has gotten to the point where it looks like NBC is trying to kill off MSNBC by saddling them with the damaged Williams. MSNBC already has a Joe Scarborough problem, and a Chris Hayes problem (nobody’s watching), so now they’ve added Brian Williams to the mix. If NBC is trying to destroy the “Lean Forward” network, they are doing a great job.
