President Obama Delivers Statement on the Chattanooga Shooting, Ensures DOD Vigilance

obama-memorial-day-15

President Obama is being careful not to say too much before all of the facts are in, but here is his full statement on the shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee:

I just received a briefing from FBI Director Comey, as well as my White House team, about the tragic shooting that took place in Chattanooga today. We don’t know yet all the details. We know that what appears to be a lone gunman carried out these attacks. We’ve identified a name. And at this point, a full investigation is taking place. The FBI will be in the lead, working closely with local law enforcement.

We’ve also been in contact with the Department of Defense to make sure that all our Defense facilities are properly attentive and vigilant as we sort through exactly what happened. And as details of the investigation proceed, we’ll make sure that the FBI, as well as local law enforcement are providing the public with all the information that’s involved.

My main message right now is, obviously, the deepest sympathies of the American people to the four Marines that have been killed. It is a heartbreaking circumstance for these individuals who have served our country with great valor to be killed in this fashion.

And although the families are still in the process of being contacted, I want them to know that I speak for the American people in expressing our deepest condolences, and knowing that they have our full support as they try to overcome the grief that’s involved here.

I also want to say that there are reports of injuries to Chattanooga local law enforcement officials. Thankfully, as far as we know at this point, they have survived the assault. And we want to make sure that they know that we’re thinking of them. They’re in our thoughts and prayers.

We take all shootings very seriously. Obviously, when you have an attack on a U.S. military facility, then we have to make sure that we have all the information necessary to make an assessment in terms of how this attack took place, and what further precautions we can take in the future. And as we have more information, we’ll let the public know.

But in the meantime, I’d ask all Americans to pray for the families who are grief-stricken at this point. And I want everybody to understand that we will be thorough and prompt in figuring out exactly what happened.

  1. Obviously he had mental issues…

So we’ve got one shooter taking out 4 Marines at a Military Center.

So much for the vaunted power of being armed.

  2. A recruiting office isn’t designed to be a defensive position. it is a professional environment where sales can be employed to recruit people interested in service. It was my first and greatest job, the military, and it all started with a recruiters office.

And this was an ambush shooting, which, if you had known anything about combat you would realize the surprise they had, even if they had firearms present, gave them no time to respond or defend themselves.

My thoughts, although I detest this proliferation of cheap and easy to acquire firearms, are not on that right now, or the argument that rarely is a shooter like this unaware of his actions (ref the decision today on the Aurora CO shooter) . No, my thoughts right now are with those four Marines,Brother vets, who tragically lost their lives today and the families that will never see their loved ones again.

  4. Thank you for your service Private.

And I apologise for my own political bias. But I will not apologise for being snarky about it.

Fox News has already tried to turn it into an attack on Hillary Clinton. Which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

And I’m willing to bet a month’s paycheck that every right wing ammosexual is going to be doing everything and anything they can to deflect questions AWAY from how Mohammad Youssduf Adbulazeez managed to get ahold of so many guns…

  5. Somebody dropped the ball. With all this NSA and homeland snooping you would think they would know about this guy.

  6. I guess you are not aware that by a law passed by Bill Clinton, military member are prohibited from carrying weapons on military instillation and thats why they were prime targets for crazy radicals.

  7. Now. Remember this and remember it well.

Patriot Act, and the NSA. How many of us have had our lives and our privacy compromised because of Bu$h and the Republicans telling us that the Patriot Act was absolutely necessary?

And yet for all of that intrusion- Roof and this fellow asswipe- went and committed these heinous acts.

And you’d think, what with the bias against folks with “Muslim” names, he’d have been noticed.

  8. …I concur for my OWN reasons…
    …back in 1983-84 during the Lebanese Civil War I was there {USS NEW JERSEY{BB-62}} as part of the Multinational Peacekeeping Force, and @30 miles offshore during the bombing of the Marine Barracks that killed 240 US Marines and 1 US Navy Chief radar tech…{ETC Michael Wayne Gorchinski…RIP}
…many o’ the professional bloviators claimed THEN that the Marines were forbidden to have mags in thier weapons, were forbidden to engage even during an attack…
…then I talked to the Marines who were on ground in/around Beirut…to a man they said “Bullshit!!! Ambushes by thier very nature are difficult to detect or stop, like suicide jockies who are indistinguishable from normal foot or vehicular traffic!!! These vehicles do NOT carry signs like “Jihadist Asshole…gonna kill you.”
…The era o’ Ronnie Raygun was the birth o’ the NeoConArtist and the Reich-Wing…
…God help me; sometimes I wish Hinkley had succeeded…

  9. And if you had done any research, you’d know it wasn’t an executive order by Bush, but a directive (5210.56) issued in 1992 by the U.S. Department of Defense which was implemented through a regulation issued by the Department of the Army. The only connection to Bush was this happened DURING his presidency…HE didn’t give or sign the order…it was an order signed into effect by Donald J. Atwood, deputy secretary of defense at the time. Directive 5210.56 was started during Bush’s presidency in 1992, was modified during Clinton’s presidency in 1993 and reissued on April 1st, 2011…so now what?….gonna blame Obama too??

  10. Dumbass who does the DOD WORK FOR? I was answering a question that was trying o place the blame on Clinton. Which wasn’t true but I left out the word administration when I said Bush.

  11. It appears this “gun-free zone” type policy can actually be traced back to Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 5210.56, signed into effect in February 1992 by Donald J. Atwood, deputy secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush.

    Fascinating Read.

But apparently even simple words are beyond the ken of Republicans and Conservatives.

The IRS conducts investigations into the tax free status of some organizations, and the Right wants to Impeach Obama- citing that it came under his authority.

Yet Military Personnel, are disarmed by a Republican President’s authority, and the Republicans and Conservatives try to pin the blame on a Democrat.

    Republicans are BEYOND pathetic.

  12. What gives with all the name calling?? I just don’t understand why some folks resort to calling other people names (eg:stupid fukers or dumbass) You know what they say …when you start name calling during a discussion or debate, you’ve essentially lost the argument. People who do the name calling often have feelings of inferiority or inadequacy and have to stoop to name calling in order to make themselves feel more powerful. But the thing about calling people names and insulting others is that it only makes the person doing it look ignorant. People should respect each other…even in a heated debate….you could have easily made your point in both of your posts without being rude.

  13. Apparently we’re all wrong…the 1992 directive was an update to the original 5210.56 issued in 1969 under the Nixon administration. But it doesn’t matter when it was started… 3 major attacks have occurred on U.S. military bases since 2009 resulting in 28 dead and over 46 injured. Had they been armed, perhaps the body count wouldn’t be near so high. It’s time to stop making military bases and facilities sitting ducks in a shooting gallery….but that’s just my opinion.

  14. Serious question: Can a nation in a state of war can call attacking a military installation a act of terrorism?

  15. Or perhaps it would’ve been worse.

Military folks are human- meaning they too make mistakes.

    Despite the massive training.

The military also has to face the UCMJ, if they screw up- one target versus hitting innocents, they get to go to the pokey for a while.

  16. Here’s the Big Question:

Why would a Recruiter need to carry a gun?

Why would any military person on base, in the U.S., need to carry a gun?

They’re not there to enforce the local laws.

They’re not in a potential combat situation.

Maybe sporting a gun might’ve helped, maybe not.

But military folks have a handicap that the shooters don’t: Innocent Bystanders.
If they started shooting back- there would’ve been a good chance of hitting some innocents.

And why does the military limit guns?

I direct you to the days of Vietnam. Back to the days of “Fragging”.

  17. He didn’t have mental issues. He was groomed by those who hate the West and cannot, and never will, be able to coexist with US laws, Constitution and freedom. Abdulazeez could not justify western life with teachings of Islam. He faced failure and did drugs. He was groomed by manipulators who handled him to carry out murder for their violent belief.

  18. You are one dumb ignorant xenophobic asshole. As of right now of the investigation he had no ties to terrorist groups. And if he was groomed by anyone it was sensualize American violence.

With more than 30 FBI agents due to arrive today in Chattanooga, a diary belonging to the gunman and FBI interviews with his parents paint a picture of a disturbed, suicidal young man using drugs, preparing for bankruptcy and facing an appearance in criminal court, according to a representative of the shooter’ s family.

Four days after the shooting, the FBI has not found any connection to overseas terrorist groups, but Mohammod Abdulazeez’s diary says that as far back as 2013, he wrote about having suicidal thoughts and “becoming a martyr” after losing his job due to his drug use, both prescription and non-prescription drugs, the family representative said.
