Obama Orders All Flags Flown At Half-Staff To Honor Chattanooga Shooting Victims

President Obama has ordered that all flags be flown at half-staff out of respect for the victims of the Chattanooga shooting.

Here is the presidential proclamation that President Obama signed:

Our thoughts and prayers as a Nation are with the service members killed last week in Chattanooga. We honor their service. We offer our gratitude to the police officers and first responders who stopped the rampage and saved lives. We draw strength from yet another American community that has come together with an unmistakable message to those who would try and do us harm: We do not give in to fear. You cannot divide us. And you will not change our way of life.

We ask God to watch over the fallen, the families, and their communities. As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on July 16, 2015, in
Chattanooga, Tennessee, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, July 25, 2015. I also direct that the flag shall
be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-first day of July, in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fortieth.

BARACK OBAMA

Gestures to honor victims of mass shootings have become too common in our society. It is time for the country to come together and discuss the ease with which virtually anyone can acquire a firearm. The conversation needs to go beyond the two extreme options of no guns for anyone, or guns for all anytime, any place, anywhere. There is a simple common sense solution that involves protecting gun rights while making it more difficult for criminals and the mentally ill to acquire firearms.

Some conservatives were trying to use the fact that the flags had not been lowered to attack President Obama’s patriotism, but the President would never be disrespectful to victims. Many of his critics on the right refuse to admit it, but this president is a patriot who deeply loves his country.

The pain he feels over the loss of innocent lives in these mass shootings is shared by every citizen of this great nation.

  1. And soon the Conservatives will be griping that the Flags were lowered by Obama…

Ever notice that a Drug Addict is never satisfied? He needs MOAR drugs?

Ever notice that a Conservative is never satisfied? He needs to bitch MOAR about Obama?

Ever notice that an Ammosexual is never satisfied? He needs MOAR guns?

  2. My comment is…..WHY DID IT TAKE 5 DAYS TO ISSUE THAT ORDER????? After so many comments by the American public that it was a disgrace for the “order” not to have been given!! Also it is customary that the Flag to be lowered to half mast for a period of 2 weeks minimum as a sign of respect. And to give a directive to our Service personnel to “not wear their uniforms” while on duty is ridiculous!!! I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN BUT ASHAMED OF OUR GOVERNMENT!!!!

  3. Will the owners of Confederate Flags on poles in their backyards and front yards fly THEIR national emblem at half mast too? Jus asking. Just wondering.

  4. Cue the outrage by the Krazy Kristian Konfederates and Fox News claiming through spittle covered lips that this is an “Insult to all God Fearin’ Patriotic Americans” or some such insane bullshit in .3,2.1…

  5. 5 days to issue this order after this horrific massacre….when the White House was lit up in all colors of the rainbow to honor the Supreme Court ruling on the same day? Just remember, the brave soldiers that sacrifice so much for everyone to have free speech and protect all our other freedoms as Americans should take priority.

  6. The Supreme Court sat on their decision for months.

What heads up did we get concerning the shootings?

Bite me hypocrite. And I speak as a Vet.

  7. So it took 5 days for Obama to order the flags lowered to commemorate the Chattanooga shootings, the Retards of the Right wish to bellyache about it…

President Obama also ordered that the Flag be lowered following the Newton Massacre.

And the very douchebags griping about Obama now, refused to lower their flags, then.

In fact no few of these World Class Ingrates were also the ones who chose to fly the Flag upside-down (State of Emergency) when he was elected and reelected.

And the FCUK are they to bitch about Obama?

Reprehensible Republican Retards, Reptiles, and Reprobates, one and all.

  8. Ok, let’s put this in Perspective.

Everytime one of you Tea-Tards bitches about Obama, I can invariably find at least one instance where W. Bu$h, did the same if not worse, and you pukes couldn’t be bothered to even notice.

Thousands of people are killed in the worst disaster ever to hit this country. MANY TIMES MORE than on 9/11. Flags are still waving at the top of flagpoles.
Now, a god-damned week after this disaster (Katrina) struck, within 24 hours of when the right-wing judge that handed Bush the presidency finally kicks the bucket, only now does that f–k think it’s time for a gesture in memory of someone. Get out there and lower all those flags. Not for the thousands who have been dying – and who continue to die – but for one old right wing crony.

    Blow me Right Wingers.

  9. Yeah, they did and that’s illegal.

I just happened to have my World Almanac with me and it has a section of the U.S. History part of the code of etiquette for flying the flag.

Unless it’s a distress signal, you aren’t supposed to fly the flag upside down. I don’t know what kind of penalty that carries, but it should at least carry something as to prevent the traitors from using our flag as an excuse as to why they are such failures.

  10. Better late than never.
    What’s the precedent for this?
Every terror related shooting (domestic and overseas) of military personnel demands a flag lowering to half staff? Then, it goes without question that it should be done automatically no? Military bases, ships, etc. without a cue from the White House should do it, no? And the White House staff should do it automatically if it is in the procedural manual for these things, no?

    What’s so complicated about this?
Why is it a political, gottcha?
Why is there a debate? Either it’s done or it’s not done (previously)
    Why’s everyone bitchin?

  11. Maybe because more good news coming out of this administration.
Consumer bureau celebrates 5th birthday with big fines for Citibank
The massive financial reform bill known as Dodd-Frank turns five on Tuesday. The White House is celebrating by issuing a handful of long overdue rules to protect service members from predatory lending, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau celebrates with a new $700 million enforcement action for credit card customers.
These new rules, the White House says, build on the consumer protections already achieved because of the law.

[The Department of Defense’s] actions build on an historic effort to strengthen consumer protections since the President signed the Dodd-Frank Act into law on July 21, 2010. Dodd-Frank created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a first-of-its-kind consumer watchdog, which has created strong safeguards for Americans taking out mortgages, paying student loans, using credit cards, and dealing with debt collectors. The Bureau’s enforcement activities have also returned more than $10.1 billion to more than 17 million consumers. Building on that record, the Department of Labor recently proposed new rules to crack down on conflicts of interest in retirement advice, requiring retirement advisers to put their clients’ best interests first.

  12. Here’s how a flag etiquette expert explained the “delay.”

“The five military personnel who were killed were classified as killed “in the line of duty” by the Pentagon. For this reason, the responsibility goes to the Governors of the each state that had a fallen hero. The President does not typically order that flags be lowered for “in the line of duty” tragedies; if he were to do so, the flags would have to ALWAYS be lowered because of soldiers dying “in the line of duty”. The flags would have remained lowered for YEARS during the wars if this were the process. So it’s not just Obama. The President has ordered flags lowered numerous times when there have been civilian casualties along with military casualties (like Fort Hood). But because these deaths occurred “in the line of duty”, it is a different situation. I am not defending this process that has been used by EVERY President, I’m merely trying to clarify. It is the Governor’s responsibility, not the President’s.

  14. I’ve already seen conservatives complaining that it took him too long to give the order. Never satisfied… *smh*

  15. Unfortunately this is not true.
1st – The pentagon is part of the intelligence community overseen by the CIA. It has nothing to do with classifying military deaths.
2nd – DOD is responsible for classifying military deaths – Upon an official finding, they post the classification on the DOD website.
3rd – If you are killed while on active duty, it is either ‘combat related’ or ‘non combat’ related. “Line of Duty” is frequently used for the official classification “Combat Related” another term is Killed in Action (KIA).
4th – NO classification has been made at this time. As per Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Paul Greenberg the official determination whether the four Marines died in the line of duty required a complex process and will be made later.

  16. It is never enough with you people, is it? You are bound and determined to hate Obama no matter what he does. You all, not Obama, are the problem with this country. Buck up and start acting like decent Americans.

  17. …yours is justifiable bitchin’ Moon; as for the bitchin’ o’ Teatards I’ll repeat what we said when I was a kid: “Dream on Alice, you’re back in Wonderland!!!”
    {{{Feel free to use}}}

  18. I just knew one of you trolls would come on and make this statement. “Why did it take so long.” When basically you are screaming “Look this molehill is really a mountain” while the mountains of dysfunction are being ignored.

If you want to be upset about Military and Veterans being disrespected write to your Representatives – especially the GOP Reps and ask why they keep wanting to defund programs that help military personnel with living expenses, mental health, physical health care; what about after they come home from war or conflict zones – programs to help them re-adjust back into society, programs that will keep them from becoming homeless vets & helping our current crop of homeless vets. No, the only funding they want for military is for weapons and war. You want to be pissed about disrespecting the military & vets – that is what you should be pissed at not about whether the flag is at half-mast or not.

  19. While down in Texas the State Militia is watching the US Military conduct readiness games just in case the Military decides to invade Texas. [wink] [nod] LOL

  20. That’s got to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read. Unfrickenbelivable! I mean, that’s like trying to make a victim of rape feel safe and protected by laying on top of them, restraining their hands, feet and body with your weight while gagging them so no one could see or hear them and locate them.

And then getting offended when the victim gets upset because geez, you were only trying to keep them safe!

  21. …the idiots who misuse flag etiquette are beneath contempt…
…if the ones flying thier Confederate flags flew ’em upside down,,,who’d even notice…lol

  22. Civilian guarding military recruitment center accidentally fired his gun while showing it off

Christopher A. Reed, 28, of Lancaster, was charged with discharging a firearm in the city limits, and was issued a summons to appear in Fairfield County Municipal Court on Tuesday, according to the police incident report.
Reed told the officer who responded that he was standing, holding his AR-15 rifle in front of the military recruiting station to guard the personnel inside when someone approached him and asked if he could take a look at the weapon. Reed agreed to show him, and while he was trying to clear the ammunition from the weapon, he accidentally fired into the asphalt pavement.

The only damage was a hole in the pavement. The rifle was taken from Reed pending his appearance in court, the incident report says.
