Lawless Anti-Gay Kentucky County Clerk Continues To Refuse To Issue Marriage Licenses

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis continued to refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Tuesday morning, a day after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected her appeal requesting a stay on issuing licenses.  The defiant clerk began her day by turning down licenses for a pair of same sex couples. April Miller and Karen Roberts, as well as David Ermold and David Moore were denied licenses, as the lawless clerk asserted that she was denying them the licenses “under the authority of God”.

The clerk got into a tense verbal exchange with one of the license applicants. When David Moore said he was not leaving until he and his partner had their marriage license, she snapped back:

Then you’re going to have a long day.

Attorneys for the discriminated against couples filed a motion on Tuesday, to find Davis in contempt of court for refusing to issue the licenses. If found guilty, she could face fines and potentially jail time for being in contempt of the court.

Davis stopped issuing all marriage licenses in June, following the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriages in all fifty states. She maintained that it would be against her Christian faith to comply with the law, because she has a moral objection to same-sex marriages.

If Davis does not wish to obey the law or to fulfill her professional responsibilities, perhaps she should find another line of work. She can play the victim and complain about religious persecution as much as she wants, but she no longer has any legal standing to continue to discriminate against the people of Rowan County.

There is no question that Kim Davis is in contempt of court and that she is unlawfully using her office to promote her own personal brand of bigotry, while completely disregarding the rights of the residents of Rowan County. She should be found in contempt and fined. If she continues to ignore the law, she should be removed from her position, and locked up in a jail cell, under the authority of the court.

  1. …aaand she thinks she can ignore the laws o’ the Land,{Jesus said to obey the Laws o’ the Land}precisely WHY???

  2. Thursday is her day of reckoning. Methinks the Judge will fine her hard and even though I don’t want any jail time because that would make her a hero to the jesus freaks I think she is going to jail for openly defying the judges order

  3. She should follow the rules she is not above the law. She should leave her so called religious beliefs at the door when she is doing her job

  4. Doesn’t bother me if she gets jail time. There is no way to stem the non-necessary lawsuits if this is not dealt with in a big way. Religious objection does not trump the law nor the constitution. No one made her the bridesmaid.

  5. For someone who has bee married 4 times who the hell do she think she is talking about what the lawd says about morality

  6. The judge could fine her into poverty and she would just refuse to pay it because Jesus told her to. I think it would be better to lock her ass up in jail for the duration of her term as clerk then release her after her replacement is elected. Christianity is on the decline. Let the ignorant, stupid jesus freaks martyr her. It will only make them look worse and be another nail in the coffin of their bullshit bougs religion.

  7. She drones on about HER fist amendment rights and refuses to obey a ruling handed down by the court and now has lost her appeal to the SC. I get she’s from a back water, bible banging Ky co, but where does she think these laws originated? Her god didn’t directly hand them to the founders of our nation, or revise them as he saw fit. Sounds like she’s on the cafeteria constitutional plan accordding to what Kim likes.

  8. This clerk needs to be fired/recalledfrom the job as she is failing to do it.

Also she is disrespecting the applicants with her remarks.

In our jobs, there are all kinds of people we rather not deal with, yet in the course of the day, we serve the good, the bad and the ugly plus the stupid, & the redneck equally.
    Why can’t she?
I though that …”Jesas loves all the little children of the world, whether you are black or white…” so goes the song

  9. The’re not asking for jail time. They want fines to be imposed. I wonder who pays, her or Rowan Co? I bet religious objections will fly out the window, if it’s her and it gets expensive!

  10. Impeach her sorry self.
    Fire her.
    Fine her into oblivion.
    Throw her in jail.
    Send her to Azkaban Prison.

I don’t care what they do with her just get her out of that job because SHE WILL NOT DO HER JOB. HER TAXPAYER FUNDED JOB, NO LESS.

She is NOT judge and jury. SHE does not decide the law of the land. The Supremes have sung and the bell has been rung and it is OVER.

Issue the licenses or get another job somewhere else that doesn’t put you in contact with anyone you think might offend your four-times-married delicate sensibilities.

    Sorry, rant over.

  11. …only Teahadists will think she’s any kind o’ martyr…to the rest o’ us, she looks like a stupid little jumped-up Teahadist bitch in dereliction o’ duty…and she CAN be jailed…

  12. She has already declared herself as martyr. So just get on with it. A fine will do no good. The religious right freaks will send thousands to pay any fines imposed. Either the state removes her from office or a lengthy jail sentence are the only reasonable answers.

It’s obvious that the conservative media will be all over SCOTUS as “activist” judges. They are no longer Hobby Lobby “saviors of the faith”.

This isn’t hypocracy, it’s just plain stupidity.

  13. Hey Kim – You’ve been married 4 times and divorced 3 and you have religious objections to issuing a marriage license?

Marriage is a permit you pay for at the county or city clerk’s office that says your marriage is legal in a civil court; marriages have NOTHING to do with the church or any religion.
You are in a position where you have to obey the law, the SCOTUS says you have to obey the law, if you’re unable to obey the law, just resign.

Don’t worry Kimmy, we’ll find an immigrant who would be delighted to do their government job paid for by MY DEMOCRATIC-SOCIALIST tax dollars.

  14. wonder if she’s paying allimony to her previous 4 “husbands” and how many of them were her cousins?

Each one finally pulled off the paper bag from her fugly head and ran for the hills, screaming.

  15. She’s getting money, support and advice from the liberty council. This is clearly a political stunt to try to get attorney General Jack Conway to intervene who is running for governor – D, against the tea party candidate Matt Bevin -R in November this year.

  16. Here’s an idea that would really free up this nonsense. How about we eliminate the Marriage license entirely? It has some racist background anyway so let’s just chuck it. Remove the government from the realm of marriage completely. The idea has eugenics origins and should be stopped.

  17. “Her god didn’t directly hand them to the founders of our nation, or revise them as he saw fit.”

Yeah, but you see, that’s pretty much the issue right there….these folks kinda do believe that is how we got started.

  18. It’s what they want, she’s signed on to be their martyr.
She will easily make six figures on her Jesus hates gays gofundme account that we can expect to be started any day now.

  19. that would create an ENOURMOUS nightmare to which there would be no end.

Marriage is a permit you pay for at the county or city clerk’s office that says your marriage is legal in a civil court; marriages have NOTHING to do with the church or any religion.

  20. This is not called “religious freedom” – this is called religious persecution – this woman is PERSECUTING everyone who does not live by HER religion and HER values!!

Marriage is a permit you pay for at the county or city clerk’s office that says your marriage is legal in a civil court; marriages have NOTHING to do with the church or any religion.

    I’ll vent:
I’m sick and tired of this religious believe thing, she’s a civil servant and religion is not an has never been apart of our government.
Our forefathers were very clear since they were fleeing the church of England.
Why is it the LIBERALS understand this???

You should go over to the LIBERAY COUNCIL page and see the uneducated and paranoid responses and praying jeabus and god to come save them.

“Religion was created to keep the feeble minded under control, kept STUPID and scared shitless”

  22. stop listening to Clown Boy Rand…

marriage confers a list of legal benefits on the two people joining together..

they can visit each other in a hospital… visits were often denied to two partners by relatives or medical staff who didn’t approve of a relationship…

    tax benefits

    medical insurance

without a simple ‘transaction’, for lack of a better word, each one of these things would have to be dealt with in some form of legal transaction…

I probably left out a bunch of stuff but you get the drift..

  23. I really didn’t get that from Rand but I see your point. And I can see a problem with not all states accepting this as gospel when people try to move to an area that doesn’t support it. But isn’t that to the detriment of the state and the choice of the people there? The states were to be a bunch of independent experiments so why not let the ones that want to do things that may or may not be for their own good? If it ruins all kinds of business and people go away then eventually they will have to change their ways or be left behind. If Kentucky wants to teach creationism and their kids end up stupid in science then they will see the error of their ways and change it.Or not if they like but it’s their choice to do so. Individual Freedoms Rock!

  24. no

the states under the Constitution are not meant to be a bunch of independent entities…

they tried that with the Confederation and it didn’t work… all the states went their own way pursuing their own policy and owing no allegiance to the central government…

that’s why the Constitution was written and why it was written the way it was.. the power to raise and levy taxes thru representation… the power to conduct foreign affairs… the power to raise and maintain an Army and Navy…

the 1st Confederation not the Confederacy of the Rebellion…

    read the Federalist Papers

  25. Rand is a self certified asswipe and an embarrassment for the state of Ky. If I were you I wouldn’t admit to finding anything he says credible.

  26. She cant be fired only impeached and the KY state legislature don’t come back into session until next year

  27. You are describing institutionazed discrimination, not individual liberty. And individual liberty ends where it infringes on the rights of others.

Are you a healthy white male heterosexual? ‘Cause it sounds like you’ve never felt the sting of discrimination.

Freedom in American is being able to live anywhere, go anywhere without fear. Fear of being turned away, rejected, harassed, bullied, attacked, threatened, ignored, excluded, punished, insulted, mistreated, intimidated, trivialized, marginalized, disrespected.

Fear that our rights will be trampled on by those who don’t want us around because we are different.

We can’t stop fighting for equality for everyone. Non-Christians. Atheists. People with disabilities. LGBT. Women. Minorities. Immigrants. The elderly.

  28. My advice to public sector Christian conservatives who deem that their warped interpretation of Biblical law trumps Constitutional law and therefore cannot stomach the recent decisions of the SCOTUS and the legally-binding mandates issued by state and federal court judges — quit your taxpayer-funded jobs, scurry on home, lock the doors, pull the blinds, and never come out again.

Otherwise, you can express your religious convictions … from the happy confines of a jail cell.

  29. I am glad that the judge has order her and her entire staff to the hearing, maybe she and her son, who works for her, can spent some quality time together….in the county jail.

  30. I’ll give her points for being a stubborn mule, but that’s it.

I find it hard to swallow that a public official would not do her job. I know if it was me, I’d still do the job because… you know, it’s my job whether I agree or disagree with the idea that gays and lesbians can get married. Being stubborn in your ideology isn’t going to give you a roof over your head, clothes on your back or food in your belly.

  31. There are some Parallels to the bundy ranch standoff! These anti government bundy thugs defied the law and pointed guns at government officials and to this day have gotten away with breaking the law.
She has been breaking the law and continues to get away with it. Why?

  32. When he was running in the primary against McConnell for senate, he decided to campaign at a cock-fight. We keep getting all the carpetbaggers who couldn’t get elected dog catcher where they’re originally from.(Rand Paul) Teabillie rethugs in the northern part of the state love this douche!

  33. factref, the problem with your “oh just let them trample secular laws in THEIR state” thing is that ALL KINDS of people live in Kentucky, not just Fundie Teahadists who want to impose their Christian Sharia on EVERYONE …

  34. If You Support the County Clerk in Kentucky, You Support Shariah Law
The Rude Pundit is trying to get his head around the thinking of County Clerk Kim Davis of Rowan County, Kentucky. See, he can’t imagine a situation where he’s asked to do something lawful for his job, for the people who, you know, pay him, and he doesn’t do it. Now, between the asking and the doing, there might be a hell of a rigamarole. For instance, recently at this here professorin’ gig, some top-down changes to curriculum were instituted. After a protracted battle, where the Rude Pundit spoke out publicly against things, where he joined protests and signed mighty petitions of many signatures, his side lost. – See more at:

  35. I know in her amnesty appeal she said that she’d never denied a license out of religious conscientious objection before. To me, though, that’s even more, ah, pardon the pun, damning. It’s not because she wants to uphold her Biblical beliefs, but because she doesn’t like the icky icky ewwwwww homosexuals. If she had denied other licenses due to conscientious objection, I might have some sympathy for her. As it is, she is just cherry picking. It isn’t freedom to practice her religion that she’s fighting for, but freedom to discriminate.

  36. Dan Savage Lays Into Hypocritical KY Clerk And Her Four Marriages

Cliff note version. Its the money
But no one is stating the obvious: this isn’t about Kim Davis standing up for her supposed principles—proof in a moment—it’s about Kim Davis cashing in. There’s a big pile of sweet, sweet bigot money out there waiting for her. If the owners of a pizza parlor could raise a million dollars just by threatening not to cater the gay wedding no one asked them to cater… just imagine how much of that sweet, sweet bigot money Kim Davis is going to rake in. I’m sure Kim Davis is already imagining it

  37. Elected public servants refusing to do their job. Now
where have we observed this behavior before? Davis
is only playing by the GOP book. If you don’t get your
way, fold your arms and do nothing. Mitch and Rand
must be so proud. Pour more sweet tea please.

  38. Remember: It’s all about the behavior, not the belief. The Judge has already said this in so many words; this is not about HER, it’s about the job! So, let’s see what the Judge has to says to her and her self-serving, slimy-bucket, opportunistic Liberty lawyers on Thursday.

I’m hoping (praying) that she (and council) have a prepared statements ready to read prior to her being found guilty. I’m also hoping lawyers join in uses the arcane verbiage “We pray that the court”, followed by the very definition that spells out the terms of treason, AND, declare it before the court.

Why not? Let them declare “treason” to the Constitution before the Court of the land by stating that the Court has no authority over them, and, that they are willing to hang on a cross for their beliefs! She and her 5th tier lawyers would get way better press, money, etc. if they jumped that shark; after all, isn’t that their real motive?

  39. County Clerk Kim Davis’ appeal to a “higher” power is nothing more than a lesser Apostolic god. In the Declaration of Independence Jefferson wrote that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The Creator is a higher authority than Davis’ Apostolic god. Each one of us are gods according to Jesus. Because we are endowed with these inalienable rights, Davis’ Apostolic god has no authority to deny any citizen of their inalienable rights.

The right to liberty includes the right to marry whomever one wants. No lesser god has any authority over the god who is endowed with those inalienable rights.

Davis’ rant sounds more like a radical Islamist. It’s hard to tell the difference between them since they are preaching the same message.

  40. One more comment…perhaps we wouldn’t be having
this issue if Kim Davis got her spiritual mentoring in
a church like President Carter attends instead of a
primative gathering where folks dance around with
poisonous snakes as they sip strychnine from mason
jars. Cue the jug band music.

  41. Not only 4 marriages but she had twins after being divorced from her 1st husband, then married a second time and finally married the father of the twins for her third husband. That one didn’t work either so now she is married to #4.
Wow, what a holy woman with such high morals.(snarc)
And she thinks she should tell others how to live.
It’s all about the money. She will rake in a lot of dough before this is all over. I just hope she spends some time in jail before she has an opportunity to spend it.

  42. About raking all that dough, I don’t know about that. The Reich wing noise machine has not been in monkey shit throwing mode over this and you can no longer go on go fund me to raise funds for bullshit like tis anymore

  43. Now that’s a miracle. She could find 4 marks to marry her. A fifth of Jack Daniels and a paper bag couldn’t fix that train wreak

  44. Her religious beliefs have nothing to do with her job. Gay marriage is the law of the land.As a paid civil servant it is her duty to give marriage licenses. If she cannot follow the law she should have stepped down.No minister is forced to perform a gay marriage. However if you are a person employed by the state you have no defense.

  45. Go Kim Davis i Support you and i fell the same as you do you are doing gods work and will and i think the lawmakers that put this law in well i will pray for them. This law should have never been put in at all this is not right its wrong for a man to lie with another man and the same for women. To whom ever this is the way I Believe.

  46. she has a right to her opinions and beliefs. the state of Kentucky must uphold the law. The county where she works should have a backup person available in the county offices who will perform gay marriages, so she can remain employed and still the marriages can proceed.

she can follow her beliefs, the gays can marry, the law is followed, and the news hype stops.

Anyone notice she has been married three times I think? What would Jesus say about that?

  47. she can always quit her job. currently her job includes marrying gay folks, and if that does not appeal to her, she should find another job. she is free to quit any time.

she is no martyr. she just wants to write another dumb book like ann coulter does regularly…making money off fake causes and crass theses.

  48. Good for you and Kim. Living in America you have the FREEDOM to practice any religion. But, when you hold public office and your salary is paid by ALL the people, you, by law have to serve ALL people equal under the law of the land. We live in a democracy not a theocracy.

  49. So…. Concerned….

What if people getting a marriage license belong to a religion that allows and welcomes same-sex marriage? Or is only your religion protected in your mind?

  50. To (EvilFerret) My religion is the Holy Bible and Gods words. God did not give Adam Jim. and he did not give Eve Sue he gave her Adam. Now that is my religion. This is the way God planed it out. And my religion as you call it dose not approve of same-sex marriage read the Bible same-sex marriage is not apart of gods planes.

  51. WTF DOES THE BIBLE HAVE TO DO WITH FOLLOWING THE LAW!! Being homeschooled you probably didn’t take civics but our nation is based on the Constitution and I would suggest you read it.

  52. Like i said before God did not give Adam Jim. and he did not give Eve Sue. I Believe in the holy bible and the Bible i read dose not teach same-sex marriage. although i do fell that Kim should just step away if it goes against her believes. What is wrong with the world it need fixed.

  53. Would it matter who read the bible? Because in your mind, and the minds of people like you, only your interpretation could be right. So whats the point?

  54. There was no Adam or Eve and you are defending a women who broke you make believe sky person own laws? Hell you have to have a flow chart just to keep up with fornication

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

  55. I suggest you read the Constitution and if you want to live in a theocracy there plenty of countries you could live in

  56. Well, you can shit in one hand and pray in the other and see which gets filled faster.

You go on and on about reading the bible, one of the most violent, racist, sexist, inconsistent pieces of fiction ever written and you expect us to take you seriously?

FYI…being a simpleton is NOT an admirable quality. If there WERE a heaven and it’s filled with people like you, I think I’ll pass.

  57. Hey, Moron: Explain this…

Genesis 1:26-28: And God said, let us make man in our image after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, (did God name our planet earth?), and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them; And God blessed them.

Genesis 2:7: And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:21-22: And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Which one is correct? Did he create both at the same time per Chapter 1 or Adam first per Chapter 2?

    Who created God?

  58. Who created God?
“On the sixth day, God created man. On the seventh day, man returned the favor.”

  59. Leviticus 18:22
22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.
    Leviticus 20:13
13 If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.
    1 Corinthians 6:9-10
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous[a] will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,[b] 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

  60. No fems? No fairies? (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and 1 Timothy 1:10)
The words sometimes translated “effeminate” and “homosexual” in these passages are obscure and difficult to translate. The first word identifies someone who is morally weak, and has nothing to do with nellie gay men. The second word probably means “people who use power to obtain sex,” though the word is so rare that a confident translation is impossible. Neither word refers specifically to gay men or lesbians.

    Jesus affirmed a gay couple.

  61. Romans 1:26-28
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

  62. If we follow the passage, step-by-step, we find Paul is moving through a logical progression. He is talking about people who:
1.Refused to acknowledge and glorify God. (v. 21)
2.Began worshipping idols (images of created things, rather than the Creator). (v. 23)
3.Were more interested in earthly pursuits than spiritual pursuits. (v. 25)
4.Gave up their natural, i.e., innate, passion for the opposite sex in an unbounded search for pleasure. (v. 26-27)
5.Lived lives full of covetousness, malice, envy, strife, slander, disrespect for parents, pride, and hatred of God. (v. 29-31)
The model of homosexual behavior Paul was addressing here is explicitly associated with idol worship (probably temple prostitution (See note 2.)), and with people who, in an unbridled search for pleasure (or because of religious rituals associated with their idolatry), broke away from their natural sexual orientation, participating in promiscuous sex with anyone available

There are, no doubt, modern people who engage in homosexual sex for reasons similar to those identified in Romans 1. If someone began with a clear heterosexual orientation, but rejected God and began experimenting with gay sex simply as a way of experiencing a new set of pleasures, then this passage may apply to that person. But this is not the experience of the vast majority of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people.
