A surge of support from very liberal Democrats has allowed Bernie Sanders to wipe out Hillary Clinton’s 19 point lead and give the Senator from Vermont a 41%-40% advantage in Iowa.

According to a new Quinnipiac University poll:

In a come-from-behind rally, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is the choice of 41 percent of Iowa likely Democratic Caucus participants, with 40 percent picking former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and 12 percent backing Vice President Joseph Biden, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to results of a July 2 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe- ack) University showing Clinton at 52 percent, with 33 percent for Sanders and 7 percent for Biden.

….

There is a wide gender gap among Democrats today as Sanders leads Clinton 49 – 28 percent among men, with 16 percent for Biden, while Clinton leads Sanders 49 – 35 percent among women, with 9 percent for Biden.

The Sanders Iowa surge is powered by caucusgoers who describe themselves as very liberal. Among those who are most to the left, 59% support Sen. Sanders. Clinton is strongest with Democrats who consider themselves somewhat liberal (45%), and conservative Democrats (44%).

The problem that Hillary Clinton is facing is that the Democratic primary electorate in Iowa is more to the left than she is perceived to be. Nationally Clinton is out-performing Sanders with Hispanics and African-Americans. Demographics are working against Clinton in the 90% plus white states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

Sanders is rolling in the two early voting states, but the question is, will the support for Bernie Sanders broaden to include the diverse electorate has powered Democrats to victory in 2008 and 2016? Democrats win general elections based on a coalition of women, Asians, Hispanics, and African-Americans.

These are the voters that Bernie Sanders needs to be leading with if he wants to win the Democratic nomination and become the next President Of The United States.

What Sen. Sanders is accomplishing is incredible, but the movement has to diversify if wants to capture the biggest prize of all.
