Obama White House Rips Republicans For Lacking The Guts To Stand Up To Trump’s Birtherism

During his daily briefing, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest called out the Republicans for lacking the courage to stand up to the racists and birthers in their party.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest blistered Republicans for not standing up to Trump’s birtherism:

Is anybody really surprised this happened at a Donald Trump rally? I don’t think anybody who has been paying attention to Republican politics is at all surprised.

The reason for that is that the people who hold these offensive views are part of Mr. Trump’s base. Mr. Trump himself would be the first to tell you that he’s got the biggest base of any Republican politician these days.

Now, it is too bad that he wasn’t able to summon the same kind of patriotism that we saw from Senator McCain who responded much more effectively and directly when one of his supporters at one his campaign events about seven years ago raised the same kind of false claims.

Now, what’s also unfortunate is that Mr. Trump isn’t the first kind of politician to countenance these kinds of views in order to win votes. In fact, that’s precisely what every Republican presidential candidate is doing when they decline to denounce Trump’s cynical strategy. Because they’re looking for those same votes.

Now, other Republicans have successfully used this strategy as well. You’ll recall that one Republican Congressman told a reporter that he was David Duke without the baggage. That Congressman was elected by a majority of his colleagues in the House of Representatives to the third highest ranking position in the House.

Those same members of Congress blocked immigration reform. Those same members of Congress oppose reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act. Those same members of Congress couldn’t support a simple funding bill because they’re eager to defend the Confederate flag.

Those are the priorities of today’s Republican Party, and they’ll continue to be until someone in the Republican Party decides to summon the courage to stand up and change it.

Trump’s birtherism does not exist in a vacuum. It is not an isolated position. Donald Trump’s birtherism represents the real values of the Republican Party. Earnest mentioned Steve Scalise as an example because the simple reality is that racism gets Republicans elected.

Not one of the Republican presidential candidates has the courage to stand up and condemn birtherism because the birthers are Republican primary voters. The Republican Party won’t condemn birtherism because they are already struggling to keep the far right extremists from declaring war on the GOP.

The White House Press Secretary was right. Birtherism should be treated as a standard position of the Republican Party. Birtherism is a byproduct of who the Republicans really are, and the White House deserves praise for connecting the dots and calling out the true face of the Republican Party.
