President Obama dropped a reality bomb on Republicans today by declaring that defunding Planned Parenthood is an illegitimate issue.

The President said:

It’s hard to believe, but it was seven years ago this week that one of Wall Street’s biggest investment banks went bankrupt, triggering a meltdown on Wall Street and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. And in the months that followed, millions of Americans lost their jobs, their homes, and the savings they’d worked so hard to build.

Today’s a different story. Over the past five and a half years, our businesses have created more than 13 million new jobs. The unemployment rate is lower than it’s been in over seven years. Manufacturing is growing. Housing is bouncing back. We’ve reduced our deficits by two-thirds. And 16 million more Americans now know the security of health insurance.

This is your progress. It’s because of your hard work and sacrifice that America has come back from crisis faster than almost every other advanced nation on Earth. We remain the safest, strongest bet in the world.

Of course, you might not know all that if you only listened to the bluster of political season, when it’s in the interest of some politicians to paint America as dark and depressing as possible. But I don’t see it that way. I’ve met too many Americans who prove, day in and day out, that this is a place where anything is possible. Yes, we have a lot of work to do to rebuild a middle class that’s had the odds stacked against it now for decades. That’s the thing about America – our work is never finished. We always strive to be better – to perfect ourselves.

We just have to make the right choices. And if Republicans want to help, they can choose, right now, to pass a budget that helps us grow our economy even faster, create jobs even faster, lift people’s incomes and prospects even faster. But they’ve only got until the end of the month to do it – or they’ll shut down our government for the second time in two years.

Democrats are ready to sit down and negotiate with Republicans right now. But it should be over legitimate issues like how much do we invest in education, job training, and infrastructure – not unrelated ideological issues like Planned Parenthood. We need to set our sights higher than that. We need to reverse harmful cuts to middle-class economic priorities, close loopholes that benefit only a fortunate few at the top, and invest more in the things that help our entire economy grow.

There’s nothing principled about the idea of another government shutdown. There’s nothing patriotic about denying the progress you’ve worked so hard to make. America is great right now – not because of our government, or our wealth, or our power, but because of everyone who works hard every day to move this country forward. Now Congress needs to work as hard as you do.

The reality is that if President Obama says defunding Planned Parenthood is an illegitimate issue that means that Republicans have no chance of seeing it happen.

House Republicans can throw a tantrum and shut down the government, but Obama is never going to sign off on defunding Planned Parenthood. Any funding plan that defunded the organization would be dead before it hit the President’s desk.

Tucked inside of the President’s call for Republicans to pass a responsible budget was a massive reality bomb that should make the right shudder. Republicans have already lost the fight to defund Planned Parenthood, and a government shutdown would only serve to expand their losses to include the 2016 election.

  1. Please proceed, Mr. Cruz. You can choose to help or hurt America. Since you will never be more than a cry-baby Senator from Texas, I suspect I know your choice. Can I suggest that you take some of your millions and pay us back this time. “We do not like you Ted I Am?”

  2. About bloody time he started talking about his accomplishments. The economy IS improving and the deficit IS dropping. Every economic indicator proves this. Yet the GOP continues to lie and blame Obama for every bad thing that has happened in America since the Civil War.

  3. All of the accomplishments listed above have been secured despite the obstruction of the GOP…every single step of the way.

  4. One of the best speeches ever. There’s nothing the Republicans can do to defend their inconceived actions. God bless you Mr. President.

  5. Truth Bomb. What Recovery? Stop Giving Our Money away to the rich, corporations and bankers BEFORE serving the public good and needs of the people. Republicans focused on the “debt”, a prefabricated idea to get 95% of $31 Trillion of our created wealth to the 1% since 2008. I don’t call that Democracy, Socialism, or even Communism. I call it Fascism, Oligarchy, Dictatorship, Plutocracy, Rule by Rich and Corporations. There is no public good for the Federal Reserve giving over $ 5trillions to foreign banks and corporations. There is no public good in the Pentagon losing $8.5 trillion. There is no public good for Congress giving trillions to the rich, at least $5.2 trillion to fossil fuel industry alone, and trillions to other multinational corporations. There is no public good when Congress refuses to make the 572 billionaires pay taxes. Time to save the 31 million children living in poverty and 7.4 million children in extreme poverty.

  6. Expand their losses in 2016? That’s 14 months away. The last time they shutdown the government, they gained seats, incredibly! The average American voter is ignorant politically. You can’t expect them to do the right thing.

  7. And if you think about that, that he has done all this despite the GOP digging in their heels and lying every step of the way, the state of the nation right now is even more impressive. Obama will go down in history as one of the greats, and his image will be on Rushmore someday. I am so proud of him and his lovely family. They never let the ugliness get them down (at least not publicly.)

  8. They may have gotten house seats but they did not get the White House that’s what we need to appoint the next justices for the high court.
And they shut down and still don’t accomplish what they were shutting down for.
    LOSERS!!!

  9. Actually, what you need is the Senate…not the WH. All Judicial appointees are approved through the Senate, and all it takes is a simple majority (51 votes)…those are 51 votes that you do not have, and will not have again anytime soon.

    Keep living “your” dream though…

  10. Whoa! Get the smelling salts! Can’t remember the last time I agreed with every commenter (save one; there’s always one.)

  11. I have a theory why the country is so dumbed down and it concerns the Public Schools; No not what the red state governors are doing to the teachers.

The American people are so damn tired of being screwed by the rich that about the only thing they can do in retaliation is refuse to pass school bond issues. So the American people screw themselves even more.

Here in Huber Heights we sit with brand new schools built by a good chunk of tobacco money but the voters refuse to pass school bond levies to properly run the new schools. Does that make sense or what?

At least the citizens of Huber Heights had enough sense to pass the levy to provide the funds to add to the tobacco money to build the schools. Read this:

Does anybody agree with my thesis?

  12. Food for thought. When I graduated from 8th grade decades ago we had to pass a constitution test and this was in Chicago. I don’t know if students today have to take that test. I know here in Oklahoma they don’t have the past that test

  13. Huber aye? That used to be a really nice town to live in. Sorry you have to live there now.
I’m in Fairborn, yeah pretty much a red neck crap hole and always has been. If I could afford it I would move back to Yellow Springs. But COL just to high there.

  14. So you live in Oklahoma. I don’t drive because of diabetic retinopathy so my wife does the driving. My wife had the misfortune of hitting a blown truck tire in Missouri that did substantial damage to the front end of the car. Since the car was drivable, a local did a Rube Goldberg fix which made the car look like a crocodile had taken a good healthy bite. So we went on to El Paso, NM, CO, and back to Dayton.
The next day on one of the OK turnpikes, every time a big rig passed her she veered slightly to the right. An Oklahoma State Trooper saw that she veered slightly to the right, stopped her and laid a $211.50 fine on her. Is that the only way Oklahoma has to get money to do the state’s business?
Screw the red states. That includes OH. Take a look at OH-9 which stretches from Toledo to Cleveland. Marcy Kaptur was the only one in the state who could beat Dennis Kucinich. Adios Dennis. Gerrymandering at its finest.

  15. Huber is a strange place. Our mayor is sure strange. He sure raised enough hell about the new Huber Music Hall which is an asset to Huber.
There are enough democrats in Huber that after The 2000 census, Huber was placed in Speaker Boehner’s district. That was part of a master strategy to get Mike Turner elected when The Shrub appointed Tony Hall to a job he couldn’t refuse, UN Food Ambassador to Rome.
Mike Turner couldn’t beat Rhine McLin for mayor of Dayton. But he sure won Tony Hall’s seat. Gerrymandering?
Wonder what Tony Hall is doing these days. He was a good Congressman.
BTW is Turner or Boehner the Congressman for Fairborn?

  16. A dynamic duo if there ever was one. Add GOP Boy Wonder Josh Mandel to the mixture and you have one hell of a concoction. That is nothing but bad news for Ohio.

Feel the Bern but HRC will do just fine.

  17. I LOVE WHEN MR.OBAMA KICK REPUBLICAN ASS. I AM VERY HAPPY THAT WE ARE BETTER AND GOING TO THE RIGH TRACK. THE PROBLEM HERE IS THE BUNCH OF IDIOTS THAT THEY ONLY THINK ABOUT STUPID ISSUES THAT DO NOT CONCERN TO MUST OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. PARRENTHOOD DO NOT RECEIVED ANY MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT FOR ABORTION. BESIDDES THAT THEY HAVE NOT DONE ANY INVESTIGATION ABOUT THE TAPES AND FIND OUT WHAT IS THE REAL TRUE. BUT, YES, THEY ARE GOING AFTER HILLARY BECAUSE THEY KNOW SHE IS THE FRONT RUNNER AND THE ONE TO BEAT. BUT THE GOP DOESN’T THAT WE HAVE PLAN A AND PLAN B. IF HILLARY IS BEATED IN THE PRIMARIES (I DOUBT IT), BERNIE IS CAPABLE OF BEAT ANY CANDIDATE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

  18. I’ve lived in the same house in the south end of Huber Heights since 1967. Only two families have ever lived in this house. We have it fixed up the way we like it. We intend to stay here until we croak.

Huber is a strange place. Our beloved Mayor is something else. Maybe we can get rid of the basTURD in the next election.

I belong to the Mont Co Dems and the HH Dems but because I don’t drive about all I am good for is phone banking and raising hell from my computer.

  19. You are absolutely right and the Republicans know this too and whole Planned Parenthood and the ACA repeal is all smoke and mirrors to divert our attention so they can continue to give everything to the rich. Our Version of Capitalism is over we need to rewrite the rules now.

  20. I am a conservative and I think defunding Planned Parenthood would be a big mistake. It serves no one to take healthcare away from poor women. I do think in light of the advances made in keeping very premature babies alive, the cutoff point for abortions needs to be revisited. Many western countries, who do allow elective abortions, have a cutoff of 12 weeks. Thereafter, danger to the life or health of the mother is the only consideration for ending a pregnancy. This needs to be looked at by the medical community, not a bunch of politicians. The sale of fetal tissue is another issue altogether and needs to be considered by the courts and perhaps a referendum. How do the majority of Americans feel about this? Do they find it acceptable or reprehensible?
