Democrats Win Big As Boehner Announces No Shutdown and No Defunding Planned Parenthood

John Boehner Face The Nation

Speaker of the House John Boehner announced a huge win for Democrats on Face The Nation. Boehner said that the government won’t be shut down, and he made it clear that Planned Parenthood will remain funded.

Video:

Speaker Boehner was asked about if the government will shut down on CBS’s Face The Nation, and he answered, “No. The Senate is expected to pass a Continuing Resolution next week. The House will take up the Senate bill. We’ll also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we’ve seen from abortion clinics in several states that really raise questions about the use of federal funds and raise questions about aborted fetuses that were born alive.”

Face The Nation host John Dickerson asked if the continuing resolution will require Democratic votes to pass, and Boehner said, “I’m sure it will, but I expect my Democratic colleagues want to keep the government open as much as I do.”

The only thing that House Republicans are getting in exchange for keeping the government open is another money wasting special committee to investigate the Planned Parenthood videos. The videos have already been proven to be edited fakes, but Republicans are about to waste millions of taxpayer dollars so that another government shutdown will be avoided.

Boehner knows that Democrats will support the continuing resolution because he has already got the votes lined up from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. The deal is done, and conservatives who wanted to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood are screwed.

In reality, all Boehner did was make the potential government shutdown the next Speaker’s problem by kicking the can down the road, and running for the exit as quickly as possible, but conservatives who were calling for the defunding of Planned Parenthood lose, because the government will stay open, and the organization will not be defunded.

This is all a big win for Democrats. Boehner can hype his special committee all he wants, but the reality is that the government won’t be shut down, and Planned Parenthood will still be funded.

  1. Well as someone who depends on his Veteran compensation this is good news but why a short term? Dammint do your job and fully fund the government to do its job

  2. I think you’re being a little naive, Jason. Did you not notice this line:

“We’ll also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we’ve seen from abortion clinics in several states that really raise questions about the use of federal funds and raise questions about aborted fetuses that were born alive.”

There ARE no “horrific videos”, John. They are FAKES. The scene Carly Fiorina described DOESN’T EXIST. FIVE different states have investigated Planned Parenthood and found NO wrongdoing. Not ONE government dollar funding Planned Parenthood has EVER been spent on abortion. Planned Parenthood supplies more women with access to contraceptives (which, by the way, PREVENT ABORTIONS) than any organization in the country.

If we want to “win big”, John Boehner must CONDEMN the latest witch hunters. But, of course, that will never happen. Witch hunting is a lot easier than governing.

  3. I really don’t understand why he even mentioned the “use of federal funds” in regards to abortions. Not only is the fraction of abortions at PP miniscule compared to what other services it offers, but federal money is not used to pay for them unless the abortions are medically necessary for the mother’s health or the pregnancies result from a crime like rape or incest.

  4. Truth Bomb: Shutdown: Stop Republican from killing us! People are dying because of Republican Governors refusing to expand Medicaid. Republicans refuse to fund veterans and seniors resulting in 2 committing suicide a day if not more. Worse yet children are suffering from PTSD and brain damage due to poverty. There is no excuse for these killing policies. Republicans policies have decreased our wages by 12.3% or $8,479 a year from 2000-2014. Republican austerity policies have pushed 222 million into poverty. Republican welfare reform pushed 31 million children and of those 7.4 million children into extreme poverty living on less the $2.00 a day. Republicans have given trillions to the rich, corporations, and bankers since 2008, resulting in 95% of $31 Trillion created wealth going to the rich. Stop the Republicans, Now.

  5. Even without a government shutdown, the names of those who supported it in order to defund PP should not be forgotten. The fact that they were willing to subject millions of American men, women, and children to economic hardships in order to use the issue of abortion as a political football should count against them in the next elections. Not only would the shutdown have deprived people of services PP provides, but it would also have created major economic setbacks for Americans already living from paycheck to paycheck. However, I am glad that it looks like the shutdown will be avoided.

  6. So we all get a front row seat to watch the new speaker get eaten alive. The t-publicans have a plan to take out the moderates (if that’s what you want to call them) one member at a time. If McCarthy is the new speaker, he’ll probably have to enter rehab in a months time. Next up.

  7. When has the complete lack of a factual basis ever stopped a conservative from using a lie to try to deprive people of their most basic rights?

  8. I get the distinct feeling the Boehner, after the Pope experience, realized that in order to vote his conscience religiously had to vote against his party. Thus, the end.

  9. The amount of money from the Federal budget that goes to Planned Parenthood is only 3%…but NONE of that money is used for abortions…

  10. Won’t it be a CR until December and then the cycle repeats itself? If so, the next Speaker will not be able to avert a shutdown either. The Tea Party faction of the Republican Party could care less about effective governing. If anything, they prefer not to govern.

  11. No government shutdown until the continuing resolution expires in December. Then they’l do it again. Boehner pretty much just told us what they intend with their bullshit “investigation”:

Associated Press: “Religious activists in the Republican Party, bolstered by House Speaker John Boehner’s sudden exit, say the next GOP presidential nominee must share their uncompromising stance on abortion rights, gay marriage and other priorities to get to the White House.”

The Christo-fascists are officially in charge now.

  12. Boehner has had no credibility for years. Why should he stop lying now. The Dems and we the People should be concerned with, what his abdicating means to the future of our Country and our wellbeing.

  13. Republicans love these pissing wars. They really do not care about or for Veterans. They only like the Military when our men and women are volunteering to sacrifice their lives. When Dick Cheney was asked several years ago during a televised interview what he felt about the 4K+ KIA in Iraq, he responded: “Well, they volunteered.” Admittedly, Democrats have their faults but the Republican Party has become a mere shell of what it once was.

  14. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. A shutdown is averted, but, the Republicans get to waste taxpayers $$$$ to investigate videos they know were altered

  15. This entire attempt to defund Planned Parenthood because they are using federal tax payer dollars was based on a lie. Live Action and their GOP Conservative Politicians lied. The Hyde Amendment prevents federal tax dollars from being used to fund abortions. So it is not possible for tax payer dollars to be used to fund abortions by Planned Parenthood.

  16. That’s right, Merry Christmas! Boehner is letting someone else leave the lump of crap in our stockings. A recycled gift, so to speak.

  17. Only until next November. Then we kiss them good-bye. The more odious they get, the better. I don’t believe they can ruin our nation in one year (even if they do not raise the debt ceiling, and hurt our credit). And then, provided all Democrats vote, they are toast in ’16. Even their own do not like them any longer.

  18. I thought of that too. He sure cried a lot. More likely he’s pulling a Palin. Somebody blackmailing him? A scandal on the horizon?

  19. You should know by now, dj, that the GOP “govern” by crisis. If they made deals to keep the government open for the next 16 months or so, it’d leave them with next to nothing to do. On the other hand, since they’re not in session very much, that would be perfect for them.

  20. Tragic, how simple common sense is considered a “big win” in this Tea-O-P circus, instead of being the preferred status quo over there…

    Sheesh.

With the in-fighting to come, I can’t see the GOP surviving very well in NOvember, 2016.

    Which is hilarious, actually.

  21. The up side is that Fiorina, who is sticking to her story, will be proved a liar. But it is a heck of a big price to pay. Maybe she should be billed for the cost.

  22. Domestic violence is a crime, unless it’s a conscience beating. John’s a victim, his conscience has immunity. Too bad John.

  23. You should have said this a long time ago
Outgoing House Speaker John A. Boehner, in his first one-on-one interview since announcing his resignation last week, compared conservative hard-liners in his party to biblical “false prophets” who promise more than they can deliver.
Boehner announced Friday that he would step down Oct. 30 after nearly five years as speaker amid constant pressure from his party’s right flank. Asked Sunday by host John Dickerson on a live broadcast of CBS’s “Face the Nation” whether those hard-liners are “unrealistic about what can be done in government,” Boehner exploded.

“Absolutely, they’re unrealistic!” he said. “But, you know, the Bible says beware of false prophets, and there are people out there spreading noise about how much can get done.”

  24. You don’t have that quite right Linda. Only 3% of PP’s services are abortion services…. not 3% of the federal budget goes to PP.

  25. Yes but she has chosen this particular lie as her hill upon which she will die. The burden of proof is on her, and she cannot produce a video that does not exist.

  26. Exactly. I’m so sick of the short-term fixes. It only gives the crazies more time to think up yet another hostage deal.

If you have the votes..DO IT COMPLETELY, and long term and be done with it.

This is very old, very old.

  27. It’s sad when religious fanatics lie & still control the Republican Party . But I wouldn’t be very surprised by a party where racism is a prerequisite . Biased hatred of the President , immigrants of all colors except Whites ,all religions not based on the ignorant beliefs of their fundamentalists base , & the hero worship of the rich as their savior along with the false religious belief that Jesus believed the poor should suffer . They follow nothing advocated in the Bible . Haven’t heard “love your fellow man” by a Repub ever .

  28. StarrGazerr. Your remarks were spot on. A spiritual handshake from me to you. Why in the hell has there been no investigation of David Daleiden and his Center for Medical Progress? It’s a given his videos on Planned Parenthood were fraudulent. They were concocted to achieve a predetermined outcome which they did. Where I came from this is called propaganda.

  29. He could clean his legacy into that of an American Hero if he’d expose the corruption the second he walks out of that building for good.

  30. Where I come from it’s called defamation.

Too bad the Republican lawmakers can’t be sued for their part in propagating the lies.

  31. since he has nothing to lose now..I would love to see him stick it to his party! Especially Cruz and all the other loons that think since they “made him resign”…they will take over….not!!!!!!
