Ex-House Benghazi Investigator Says Committee Chair Rep. Trey Gowdy Broke The Law

Ex-Benghazi investigator Todd Podliska’s attorney is claiming that House Select Committee Chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-OK) has violated several federal laws.

MSNBC’s Ari Melber reported:

“Both Representative Gowdy and the committee have clearly violated terms of the confidentiality agreement and the Congressional Accountability Act,” said Peter Romer-Friedman, one of Podliska’s attorneys, to MSNBC on Monday afternoon.

….

At issue in the new claims made Monday by Podliska’s lawyers are critical comments leveled by Gowdy about Podliska over the weekend, in response to the ex-staffer’s charge that the committee improperly targeted Clinton. Gowdy, the Benghazi committee chairman, told NBC News’ Kristin Welker that Podliska was a “lousy employee” who mishandled classified information, and that his criticism of the committee’s focus on Hillary Clinton only arose when he “was losing in mediation on his reservist claim.” That referred to Podliska’s claim that the committee retaliated against him for leaving the country to serve in the Air Force Reserves.

Gowdy tried to make the scandal go away by attacking the credibility of the witness, but in the process of smearing Podliska, he broke the law.

Republicans thought that the Benghazi Select Committee was their ticket taking down Hillary Clinton. What has happened is that Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy admitted that the investigation was a partisan political attack on Clinton. A Republican whistleblower who worked for the committee confirmed that the investigation was out to get Clinton. Chairman Gowdy (R-SC) and the House Republicans responded to these allegations by violating the law while trying to smear the whistleblower.

What was supposed to be a problem for Hillary Clinton has morphed into a scandal that is threatening to swallow the Republican Party. It was only yesterday that House Republicans were defending the integrity of Gowdy. Twenty-four hours later, their “man of integrity” is accused of violating multiple federal laws.

Republicans have finally found their scandal in Benghazi. Unfortunately, for them the real scandal involves the laws that are being broken by Republicans during their Benghazi investigation.

  1. Poor Gowdy, he actually thought this was going to be a big career move and earn him a place in history where he was a hero, now it’s all going down hill to a bottomless pit.

  2. if your counting on wet noodle democrats to hold them accountable, you will be waiting forever, democrats don’t fight, they bend over

It’s what the GOP do best. Every GOP delegate should be through out and imprisoned!

  4. What needs to happen is those in violation of the law need to be taken out of Congress in handcuffs. But it is very doubtful that this will happen until the GOP lose the majority in all of Congress.
Boy how low the party that was once know as the Grand Old Party has fallen.

  5. Right. The military officer threw a hissy and mishandled classified. Not the newbie civilian oil whore. Got it.

  6. Rethugs…..lie, cheat, steal! We all know that! Now, go, go, get them and take them down. Prosecute voter disenfranchise too…..

  7. “Lynch” them all. Starting with Trey Gowdy. John Beohnor’s reason to resign, figured there was hell below when he resigned. It’s always, always someone tries to make what looks like, until you dig deeper, like he was jes’ resignin’. Fed up with the rat race, uhh, uhh, either ethics have been corrupted or a HUUUUUge, problem(s) is developing. They need to form a committee to investigate the skullduggery in the GOP. But they are not crooks, just a Gang of roaches scattering for their life. John cried after confessing Congressional sins to the Pope, started to weep when the Pope, as only the Pope can do with credentials and, a straight face, calmly said: You’re doomed son. John got more misty. Just shameless.

  8. Maybe this will finally convince Fat-face Czech boy that Republicans and conservatives (of which he still is one) are sh1tty people.

  9. Mr. Asswipe, I can see that your language reflects your nickname (maybe your real name). As always, when people have been beaten by a reasonable president and a seeker of peace, these so called conservatives have nothing but foul statements.

  10. Ooops. This is what happens when ideology replaces respect for the law, when political gain overwhelms due process.

Sorry, Gowdy -you are NOT above the law.

  11. This must be the reason John B left.He may have known this was falling apart. What happened to the lawsuit he filed on the President?John B doesn’t have clean hands either.

  12. Your name is “asswipe” and you’re talking about bending over, hmmm…Me thinks you should take your anal obsession elsewhere.

  13. They know full well that this is an indignation non-starter. The R’s have their heads in the sand and won’t hear it. Everyone else knew it the moment the Committee was appointed and just want it to stop. You can’t expect the general public to get up in arms about something they didn’t care about in the first place.

  14. Employee files and records are NOT public. Gowdy should end up in court and charged with violating federal law.

  15. Gowdy attacked CNN and called its interview with Major Podliska false. He also said that CNN should have contacted the committee for a statement. CNN decided not to let him get away with lying and issued its own statement saying that it did contact the committee and included its statement in its reporting yesterday. CNN also revealed that it asked Gowdy to appear on its program yesterday, but he refused. I don’t care how angry Gowdy and the other GOP/TPers are. It’s way past the time that the media stopped giving them a pass on their lies. There is a real scandal involving Benghazi, and it involves all of the lies that GOP/TPPers have been telling about the matter and the millions of our tax dollars they’ve spent on this partisan witch hunt. I’ve noticed that since the House GOP/TPers have been exposed as liars and an ungovernable lot, there aren’t too many of their supporters coming here to defend them. If they’re ashamed of them, they should be, and of themselves.

  16. Absolutely correct Nancy, there is a ton of dirt, misuse of power, on Issa. Issa is like the Don Corleone of politics. Every investigation needs to be investigated. They have been using these fake scandals and investigations since Bill Clinton was in office. When real scandals like Dick Cheney and his uncovering Valerie Plane, the administration going to the judiciary to have laws rewritten to cover so much abuse of power by the Bush administration, especially Cheney and his gang of thieves/thugs. Now we have one lone Republican with a conscience. There are so many that need investigation, then let’s investigate the press for not doing their job. Andrea Mitchell was on cutting the President’s quote about the emails last night. Her face was filled with glee! How disturbing the GOP/Tea Party and mainstream media and their lies have become. We only find the truth if someone blows the whistle, but the media STILL spins the story with editing and outright lies. Sad and dangerous…

  17. Shadowolf, ever notice that you never see Trey Gowdy and the Penguin from “Gotham” in the same room together!? But that would be an insult to the Penguin because he is way more likeable and is a better dresser. And we all know just how much he loves his mother.

  18. For those GOP religious hacks, they always take cover either in their fear mongering, or their lies crying scandal. It’s very annoying. I noticed that when Boehner gave his resignation, he took cover in the notion that he was doing a selfless act, in a way sacrificing himself for the party’s benefit. The same self-sacrifice, fall on your sword type of mentality was offered by McCarthy too, for dropping out of the contest for House Speaker just before the vote.

It’s kind of interesting that GOP sacrificing is necessary when they hold the majority, and maybe Ryan will be the next to immolate himself for the team.

But, Gowdy stays the course, he just sacrifices his honor for all to see.

  19. The media is owned by corporations now and as such are no longer news organizations, but exposes’ vying for ratings. They are no more credible than someone’s internet blog.

  20. The “That’s a damn lie!” retort from Trey Gowdy sounded so much like Nixon’s “I am not a crook.” remark that I bursted into laughter as soon as it came out of his mouth.

  21. …’scuse me Fireman???
It just happens that 1/2 of me ancestry is Bohemian…now known as Czech…
    PLEASE watch the blanket statements???

  22. Does anyone here remember Watergate, where Nixon’s buddies broke into the Dems’ headquarters at the Watergate Hotel? This is a lot like that, the GOP breaking laws as part of their re-election plan.

    Gowdy looks like Draco Malfoy.

  23. Boehner got out of there because he knew he’d get deposed. I do think he did a good thing, because if he hadn’t brought the vote to the floor, the rest of the GOP crazies would never have let it come to a vote, and the best way to do it was to fall on his sword.

However, that’s about the only good thing he ever did as Speaker. He was spineless, and didn’t figure out how nutso several factions in his party were until recently. The only reason I’m sorry he’s leaving is because things will get crazier now, if that’s possible. None of the Freedom Caucus people are willing to take the job, but they’re going to make it so difficult for anyone else that no one wants to do it. It’s kind of like the Muslim leaders who persuade their followers to become suicide bombers. You don’t see any of THEM wearing a bomb vest, either.

  24. Don’t break out the champaign too soon. Factfinding = persecution to the average Republican voter that is too fragile to think about any issue not confirming their bias. We tend to project our own thinking process on all voters, and that simply isn’t possible for the average American. The more you challenge their misconceptions the more anger they display against you. We have to find some way to dumb down any message we have for them until it can be published as a coloring book or we will continue to lose important elections.

  25. It burns me up how these republicans can get away with the lies and manipulation! If they can’t win their argument with reason and logic, then cheat!!

  26. Where’s Morning Joe not only that where’s Mika. I know Joe is full of sht, but Mika? Why aren’t they talk about how fuked up the republican party is. They are so focus on the Democrat debate which I thought was to the point. The republicans can’t even name a speker of the house. What’s wrong with this sht? Why can’t Mika take her head out of Joe’s ass?
