Ben Carson went on Meet The Press and assured voters that his days of trying to stab people are in the past.
Video of Carson discussing his violent past on Meet The Press:
Transcript via Meet The Press:
CHUCK TODD: Do you think that people mistaken your soft-spokenness with a lack of energy?
DR. BEN CARSON: I think so. I have plenty of energy. But, you know, I am soft-spoken. I do have a tendency to be relaxed. I wasn’t always like that. There was a time when I was, you know, very volatile. But, you know, I changed.
CHUCK TODD: When was that?
DR. BEN CARSON: As a teenager. I would go after people with rocks, and bricks, and baseball bats, and hammers. And, of course, many people know the story when I was 14 and I tried to stab someone. And, you know, fortunately, you know, my life has been changed. And I’m a very different person now.
Republicans freaked out when Barack Obama admitted before he was a candidate that he smoked pot, but they are not troubled all by Ben Carson’s history of physically assaulting people. People make mistakes as teenagers, but going after people with rocks, bricks, and baseball bats are not incidents that should be brushed off and overlooked.
If the shoe was on the other foot, and a Democratic candidate had this kind of behavior in their past, Republicans would be saying that the candidate is not fit to serve as president. However, Carson is getting a pass on his past from Republican voters in Iowa.
The entire Carson interview was bizarre. Carson promised to outlaw all abortions and get rid of Medicare if elected president. Carson’s policy positions, if they can be called that, are a fantasy of the extreme right.
When a candidate has to go on national television and promise that the whole trying to stab people thing is behind them now, that candidate has major problems. If Carson or Trump is the Republican nominee, Democrats will have a field day in the general election.
