Bernie Sanders Applauds President Obama For Rejecting The Keystone XL Pipeline

Sen. Bernie Sanders applauded President Obama for not allowing some of the dirtiest fossil fuels on earth to shipped through the United States.

In a statement, Sen. Sanders (I-VT) said, “Climate change is a global environmental crisis of huge magnitude. It is insane for anyone to be supporting the excavation and transportation of some of the dirtiest fuel on earth. As someone who has led the opposition to the Keystone pipeline from Day 1, I strongly applaud the president’s decision to kill this project once and for all.”

Sen. Sanders has been a vocal opponent of the pipeline for years, and his support of the President’s decision reflects the wide consensus on the left that the project was a bad deal for the environment and the American people.

In January, Sen. Sanders ripped the Senate for passing a bill that authorized the construction of the pipeline, “The passage of this bill was crazy on many different. In terms of politics, it was absolutely insane for Republicans to waste nearly a month of time debating and passing a bill that the president has vowed to veto on numerous occasions. It has been well known for weeks that Republicans in both the House and Senate did not have the votes required to override President Obama’s veto. With gas prices plunging to a low point, the main Republican argument that Keystone XL would make America more energy independent (it won’t) has fallen on deaf ears.”

President Obama vetoed the Senate bill, and Republicans have been on the ropes ever since. As President Obama pointed out during his statement today, Keystone XL was never going to make America more energy independent, or deliver jobs to the economy.

Keystone was always nothing more than a gift to big oil, and to his credit, Sen. Sanders opposed the pipeline from day one.
