It was bad enough when Trump said it was no big deal that he was being used as a poster boy for terrorist recruitment by al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab. But Trump thinks he is bigger than the country, and certainly more important than any other American. This is all about Trump, and making him great.

Appearing Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Trump said,

“They use other people, too. What am I going to do? I have to say what I have to say. And you (know) what I have to say? There’s a problem. We have to find out what is a problem. And we have to solve that problem.”

Well, technically, you don’t have to be such an ill-informed loudmouth, but whatever. Let’s agree that you will say what you want to say for purposes of self-validation if not because you are as big a racist and bigot as you appear.

How’s that?

But now one of Trump’s top aides, Michael “you cannot rape your spouse” Cohen, is retweeting what conspiracy-minded Trump supporters have claimed, that Hillary Clinton is behind al-Shabaab’s recruitment video featuring Trump.

This was another one Cohen liked enough to retweet:

Cohen is a chip off the old block, having said last year that marital rape is legal – oh, and threatening to ruin a reporter’s life – so that tells you something about just how much Trump loves women, employing a guy like this still. The campaign tried to mealy-mouth its way out of this even now by telling CNN that Cohen isn’t “representative” of the campaign.

Right.

Trump, meanwhile, tried to tweet his way out of it by claiming this is only al-Shabaab, not the Islamic State using him, as though that makes it all okay:

Trump said on Face the Nation that he’s doing the right thing, that, as always, he is the one guy in all this who is right and strong and willing to speak the truth no matter how popular, er…um…”unpopular” it makes him:

“Look, there’s a problem. I bring it up. Other people have called me and say, ‘You have guts to bring it up because frankly, it’s true but nobody wants to get involved.'”

“Now people are getting involved. People that are on different persuasions than me right now, John, are saying, ‘You know, maybe Trump isn’t wrong. We want to examine it.'”

Or – and I’m just throwing this out there – we’re saying you’re a giant douche bag.

Trump is able to convince himself of anything. Trump’s fanboys and fangirls are able to convince themselves of anything. That is the only constant here, the willingness of personality and cult to Trump reality what what they want to be true.

Trump, as Bernie Sanders pointed out as a heckler was led away, has a lot of people convinced they need to worry about his money. It’s a shame they don’t worry about their own.

Ask not what you can do for your country, Trump appears to be telling us, but what you can do for Trump. It’s a shame all those fanboys and girls don’t worry less about making Trump great and more about making America great, for the two are mutually exclusive, as Trump has proven here again.
