All the news is about Mitt Romney’s big “eviscerating” speech today in which he will describe Donald Trump as a “phony” and a “fraud.” Rich stuff coming from the all-over-the-place “which” Mitt of 2012.
Yes, all establishment hopes have come down to Mitt Romney, now that Cruz and Rubio and all the others have failed.
But Trump has struck first, tweeting last night,
He followed this up with several others, including,
Romney plans to argue that a Trump win ultimately means a win for Hillary Clinton:
“A person so untrustworthy and dishonest as Hillary Clinton must not become president. But a Trump nomination enables her victory.”
But Trump presented himself as the great white male hope. Perhaps Cruz can save America from a wrathful God, but Trump has more power yet – the power to stop Hillary:
We are told Romney will say,
“Donald Trump says he admires Vladimir Putin, while has called George W. Bush a liar. That is a twisted example of evil trumping good.”
It is not that Romney is wrong about Trump – he’s right – but this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black if there ever was one. So Trump is right too, that Romney is the wrong messenger.
The GOP has fallen over itself with the Trump dilemma, a self-inflicted wound that continues to fester with each passing day, and will continue to do so until they realize that they made Trump, and only they can unmake him.
It is a little hard, after all, to shout down a message when it’s the same message you yourself are shouting from the rooftops. But then they’ve never gotten that it’s not the messenger, but the message itself that is their party’s biggest problem.
