Elizabeth Warren Shows Why Democrats Respect The Constitution More Than Republicans

While speaking about President Obama’s nomination Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) showed respect for the Constitution that is clearly missing among Senate Republicans.

In a statement, Sen. Warren said:

For decades, Chief Judge Merrick Garland has served his country with distinction – as a federal prosecutor, a senior official at the Department of Justice, and a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Along the way, he has won praise from Democratic and Republican Senators, liberals and conservatives – even the Bush-appointed Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

The confirmation of a Supreme Court Justice is one of the most solemn tasks that our government performs. President Obama has done his job – selecting a nominee and sending that nominee to the Senate – and it’s time for the Senate to do its job.

I look forward to meeting with Chief Judge Garland, reviewing his record closely, coming to a decision on his nomination, and then voting. It is my hope that all Senators will show the American people that they respect the President of the United States, the Constitution, and Chief Judge Garland enough to do the same.

Warren praised Garland’s record and history of bipartisan support. She wisely held off on endorsing his nomination until she met with the Chief Judge. In other words, Elizabeth Warren is respecting the Constitution, and committed to carrying out her constitutional responsibilities as a United States Senator.

Sen. Warren displayed respect for the Constitution that is lacking on the Republican side of the aisle. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s decision to obstruct President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee before he had been chosen was displayed an unprecedented level of disrespect towards the document that the is foundation of the nation’s representative democracy.

Senate Republicans have crossed the point where they are placing political obstruction above the Constitution. Sen. Warren, President Obama, and congressional Democrats have shown a deeper commitment to our constitutional values than the flag waving make America great hypocrites within the Republican Party can ever dream of possessing.

Democrats like Sen. Warren are real patriots that the American people should be proud of.
