Sen. Mitch McConnell’s plan for reassuring voters about Donald Trump is to promise to obstruct the crazier things that Trump wants to do if he wins the White House.
Video:
The Senate Majority Leader told CBS News, “Well, one thing I’m pretty calm about is that this is nowhere near the most divisive period in American history. But what protects us in this country against big mistakes being made is the structure, the Constitution, the institutions. No matter how unusual a personality may be who gets elected to office, there are constraints in this country. You don’t get to do anything you want to.”

Mitch McConnell was trying to reassure voters that he will block Trump from pursuing his agenda of building a wall, deporting 11 million immigrants, and banning Muslims from entering the US. The Republican Party has entered a whole new phase of crazy with the Republican Senate Majority Leader all but promising that he will obstruct the newly elected Republican president if Trump wins the White House.
The truth is that McConnell is right. Trump won’t be able to sail into the White House and do whatever he wants. However, the idea that voters should trust McConnell to stop Trump instead of doing it themselves at the ballot box is so absurd that it is almost funny.
The Republican argument for electing Trump comes down telling voters, sure he’s nuts, but don’t worry, we’ll keep him under control.
If this is the best strategy that McConnell can come up with for negating Trump’s ability to hand the Senate back to the Democrats, he better start packing up his office, because Democrats are going to take back the majority in November.
