As Clinton gets a 10 point lead in a Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind national poll, another Republican flocks to the Democratic presidential candidate.
Former Republican Congressman Ed Weber, who was swept into his Ohio 9th district Congressional seat with Ronald Reagan to serve one term, endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton for president.

Following Hillary Clinton’s visit to Toledo on Monday, former Republican Congressman Ed Weber of Toledo today endorsed her, praising her decades of experience and urging Republicans and Independents to support her this November. Weber, who represented Northwest Ohio in the United States House of Representatives, joins a growing list of Republicans and Independents who are stepping forward to back Clinton for president. Following Clinton’s successful debate last week, an additional 40 prominent leaders endorsed Hillary Clinton, putting country ahead of party.
“Based on her experience as a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and First Lady, Hillary Clinton knows the job and is ready to serve as President of the United States—and her performance in the first debate only made this more clear,” said former Republican Congressman Ed Weber. Donald Trump has no comparable experience and doesn’t understand how government works. His ideas about foreign policy and other issues are simplistic, and obviously without any critical thinking. Above all, he has clear character issues, and is unfit to hold office. I urge Republicans and Independents everywhere to oppose Trump and vote for Hillary Clinton this November.”
While Weber’s endorsement might seem like no big deal given that he served years ago and for only one term, he is part of a larger group of Republicans who have chosen to endorse Clinton, and since he’s in Ohio – a swing state Trump is currently winning with a +3.4 , a trend that started in late September – his endorsement takes on bigger weight.
Endorsements speak to those who are undecided and to those who relate to the person or entity making the endorsement. Endorsements don’t decide races or pick winners, but the defection of Republicans from the Republican nominee speaks volumes in this case.
Donald Trump spent last week determined to demonstrate just how unfit he was for the office, between spending five days abusing his power to pick on beauty queen Alicia Machado after a disastrous debate performance to his surrogates gloating about his brilliance in the wake of the release of his leaked tax return suggesting that Trump might not have paid income taxes for 18 years.
The bottom line is civilized people don’t want to be seen with Donald Trump and people who really care about this country and the world are terrified of a Trump presidency. They are speaking out because they know he is dangerous and even though they might disagree with Clinton on policy, they find her temperamentally fit for the office.
And that’s a qualification that can’t be faked and shouldn’t be ignored.
