Trump’s strategy of burning through other people’s money for his own benefit may allow Hillary Clinton to win Arizona as his cash-strapped campaign can’t afford to defend the state.
NBC News reported on the dire Republican situation in Arizona:
The campaign has placed few resources in the state. There are five staffers aiding Trump’s bid, paid for by a combination of the campaign, the RNC and the Arizona Republican Party.

The campaign has not put up any broadcast TV or radio spots in Arizona, and it has committed just $15,000 for mailers for the remainder of this month and $7,000 for the final week of the campaign.

The state party has been the primary source of pro-Trump messaging, sending out multiple fliers on behalf of the party and Trump and placing calls to Republican voters. The state’s party chairman, Robert Graham, has remained a vocal proponent of the GOP nominee, and the state treasurer, Jeff DeWit, serves as the national campaign’s chief operating officer.
While Republicans are trying to get by with quarters that they are finding under the office couch cushions, Hillary Clinton just announced a $2 million push to win the state.
The reason why Republicans are in such bad shape in Arizona is easy to figure out. Donald Trump is making the state Republican Party fund his presidential campaign in Arizona. Trump is pulling the same trick in Ohio and other swing states.
Trump is raising hundreds of millions of dollars, but he isn’t spending that money on organizers, advertising, and get out the vote efforts. Outside of spending on his own companies and buying lots of hats and signs, it’s a mystery where the money is going.
State parties lack the resources to carry the burden of a staffing a presidential effort and helping out all of the other down ballot races. When Trump uses their money, there is less to go around for other Republican candidates.
Hillary Clinton and Democratic candidates may win in Arizona because Trump is more interested in bankrupting the Republican Party for his own benefit than he is helping Republican candidates win in November.
