Following Donald Trump’s stunning electoral victory over Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, the Democratic Party is reflecting not just on what went wrong in this year’s presidential race , but how it can come together to ensure a brighter future.
Howard Dean, former Vermont governor and ex-DNC chairman, thinks he knows how to do it: Bring back the 50-state strategy that he implemented during his time leading the DNC.
In a tweet, Dean announced that he is, indeed, running for his old DNC job:
During Dean’s previous tenure as the DNC chair, the Democrats were able to regain control of both chambers of Congress in 2006 and take back the White House in 2008.
After Tuesday’s election which saw the Democratic nominee lose typically Democratic states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (she currently trails in Michigan, too), Dean hopes to replicate the positive results of his 50-state strategy.
Also in the running for the DNC’s top job is Rep. Keith Ellison, a progressive who has already been endorsed by former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Ellison is one of just two Muslim members of the House of Representatives.
