Bernie Sanders Is Right: The DNC Needs Rep. Keith Ellison To Be The Next Chair

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) along with incoming Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer are correct. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) is the right choice to be next Chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Sen. Bernie Sanders loudly voiced his support for Rep. Ellison as DNC Chair in a letter to supporters:

The declining middle class is sick and tired of establishment economics, establishment politics, and the establishment media. People are tired of working longer hours for lower wages, of seeing decent paying jobs go to China and other low-wage countries, of billionaires not paying any federal income taxes, and of not being able to afford a college education for their kids – all while the very rich become much richer.

Voters know these problems — yet they chose Donald Trump as their next president. That means the Democratic Party needs to look itself in the mirror and work tirelessly to become once again the party that working people know will work for their interests.

….

That’s why I believe that Rep. Keith Ellison is the right person to lead the Democratic National Committee.

Keith is one of the most progressive members of Congress, and he was an early supporter of our political revolution. He is a co-chair of the House Progressive Caucus, a strong believer in grassroots politics, and someone who would be enormously effective in leading the Democratic Party against President Donald Trump.

It isn’t just his bio and background that makes Rep. Ellison right for the job. Ellison has shown that he can seamlessly move between both wings of the party. He is a progressive, who also moved from supporting Sen. Sanders in the primary to helping to unify the left around Hillary Clinton. Ellison is very comfortable in the national media, and he understands the need for a grassroots rebuilding of a DNC that atrophied under Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Rep. Ellison is someone that rank and file Democrats can excitedly support. The same can’t be said for other high profile candidates Martin O’Malley and Howard Dean.

The fight to be the next chairman of the DNC is going to get ugly because it will be contested between the grassroots of a party that is moving to the left and an old school party establishment that tried to turn back the clock and win an election with a message that didn’t energize the party’s base.

It is time for the leadership of the Democratic infrastructure to come from the grassroots, which is why Bernie Sanders was correct. Rep. Keith Ellison is right choice to be the next DNC chair.
