Joe Biden and his staff are planning and laying out a strategic map for the former vice president to run against Donald Trump in 2020.
Politico reported, “Joe Biden has been saying yes to nearly all the political invitations coming his way, with new ones arriving almost daily. Privately, the former vice president and his staff have started talking about how to begin planning a strategy with a roughly 18-month timeline so that if he decides on another presidential run, he’ll be best positioned to get it off the ground. Biden will be 77 by the time of the next Iowa caucuses, but Biden 2020 just might happen.”
Biden could be a double-edged sword. If one was to design the perfect candidate that would bring all wings of the Democratic Party together, the former vice president comes closest right now. Joe Biden would be the perfect messenger against the Trump administration. The problem is that Biden is also capable of holding back the rebuilding of the Democratic Party.
Democrats have had some early success in drafting new candidates and building grassroots energy. For a party that needs to get younger in leadership at all levels, having Joe Biden as the 2020 nominee would send a very mixed message.
On a visceral level, it feels like if Democrats would nominate Biden, they could be repeating the mistake that they made with Hillary Clinton. It might not work out well for the party to run a familiar Washington face and voice when the outsider argument is waiting to be seized against Donald Trump in 2020.
Biden would present a major problem for Donald Trump, but the question is would he be the right person in 2020 to lead the Democratic Party?
