Trumpcare Takes Another Blow As 76% Oppose GOP Assault On Pre-Existing Condition Coverage

Donald Trump and his Republican allies in Congres may be hoping to strip protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions in their Obamacare repeal legislation, but the American people are overwhelmingly opposed to such a move.

According to a new IBD/TIPP poll released Monday, 76 percent of Americans want to keep the Affordable Care Act’s rule that insurance companies can’t charge more for those who are sick or have a pre-existing condition.

That number is 33 percentage points higher than the number of Americans who agree with the portion of the GOP plan that allows states to opt out of the rules that protect people with such illnesses.

While Republicans are banking on their repeal efforts to excite the base of the party, it’s becoming clear that they are in over their heads and the American people are roundly opposed to their efforts.

It turns out that health care isn’t as political as they are hoping.

When Americans head to their polling places in 2018, they’re going to have more important things to think about than political gamesmanship – like which candidates voted to take away their cancer treatments or life-saving medical care to score a hollow partisan victory.

And still, the fact that an overwhelming majority of the country is in agreement on an issue doesn’t mean Trump and Republicans will ultimately come around or back down from their proposal.

Keep in mind, this is the same party that has repeatedly stood in the way of another public health issue – preventing gun violence – when 90 percent of the country supported certain gun control measures.

At the end of the day, Republicans live in a bubble and care only about scoring hollow political victories to satisfy the most extreme elements in their party.

If they continue marching down the politically suicidal path of passing legislation that will literally result in Americans losing their medical treatments or their lives, not even their gerrymandered districts will be safe anymore.
