Trump’s Russia Nightmare Grows As Special Counsel Has A Draft Of His Comey Firing Letter

Trump’s real reason for firing former FBI Director James Comey may already be known, as Special Counsel Robert Mueller has a draft of Trump’s letter firing Comey.

The New York Times reported, “The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, has obtained a letter that President Trump and a top political aide drafted in the days before Mr. Trump fired the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, which explains the president’s rationale for why he planned to dismiss the director. The May letter had been met with opposition from Donald F. McGahn II, the White House counsel, who believed that some of its contents were problematic, according to interviews with a dozen administration officials and others briefed on the matter.”

The draft of the letter most likely doesn’t say that Comey is being fired over the Russia investigation, but the problematic elements of the letter directly go to Trump’s motivation for wanting Comey gone. The Times story does not indicate how Mueller obtained the letter, but given the sensitivity of the fire Comey effort, someone from inside the White House had to have given the draft to the Special Counsel.

The letter is Trump’s worst nightmare come to life because it goes to the real motive for Comey’s firing. If Mueller has evidence that can prove obstruction of justice, Trump is a dead president walking. Trump legal team has offered up dubious reasoning for why Comey’s firing was legal by suggesting that Trump has the power to hire and fire anyone while ignoring motive and that James Comey is not a reliable witness.

Mueller’s investigation looks to be gathering more evidence than was previously thought. If the Special Counsel has drafts from within the White House, Trump’s Russia nightmares just got a whole lot worse.
