Republicans are miserable, and their problems may only get worse after Donald Trump realized that giving Democrats what they want, got him good TV coverage.
But in calls with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday morning, Trump raved about the positive news coverage it had received, according to people familiar with the calls, and he seemed very pleased with his decision.
Trump specifically mentioned TV segments praising the deal and indicated he’d been watching in a call with Schumer, two people said. And he was jovial in a call with Pelosi and agreed to send a tweet she asked for about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, these people said, while also mentioning the attention the deal had gotten. He indicated to both leaders he would be willing to work together again.
Donald Trump’s motivations are easy to analyze, and many an expert has made the fatal error of over thinking Trump. This president loves positive press. He is insecure and wants to be praised and loved at all times. If Trump thinks that he can get the positive coverage and love he desperately craves from working with Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker of the House Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) could find themselves cut off at the knees.
Should Trump decide that working with Democrats is better for him than working with his own party, Wednesday’s deal will only be the beginning of Ryan and McConnell’s headaches. Trump only cares about Trump, and if working with Democrats gets him praise on cable news, that is what he will do.
