With Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation turning its focus to six White House aides, Donald Trump’s communications director and one of his most trusted confidantes, Hope Hicks, is lawyering up, according to new reporting.
As Politico noted late Friday, Hicks hired Robert Trout, who is “a veteran of the Justice Department” and a former Baltimore assistant U.S. attorney.
It’s just the latest sign that the White House is becoming increasingly nervous about the direction of the special counsel investigation, particularly as it gets closer and closer to the president himself.
The news that Hicks is lawyering up followed earlier reporting that Mueller wants to interview six Trump aides as part of the investigation into the campaign’s ties to Russia.

According to The Washington Post, “Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III has alerted the White House that his team will probably seek to interview six top current and former advisers to President Trump who were witnesses to several episodes relevant to the investigation of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, according to people familiar with the request.”
Among them is Hicks, as well as former press secretary Sean Spicer and ex-chief of staff Reince Priebus, but there are other close Trump aides that Mueller has his sights on, too.
Trump may hope the Russia investigation finally blows over in the wall-to-wall hurricane coverage in recent weeks, but Robert Mueller’s probe is clearly picking up strength as the category five scandal gets closer and closer to the Oval Office.
