A new poll shows former vice president Joe Biden would easily beat Trump in a 2020 presidential election matchup.
According to PPP, “Trump continues to fare very poorly in possible match ups against Democrats for 2020. We tested Hillary Clinton against Trump this month for the first time, mostly as a baseline for comparison against other possible Democratic candidates, and Clinton leads Trump by 5 points at 47/42. 3 Democrats we tested clearly perform more strongly against Trump than Clinton- Joe Biden who leads by 13 points at 53/40, Bernie Sanders who leads by 11 points at 51/40, and Michelle Obama who leads by 10 points at 51/41. Biden and Sanders both win over 10% of people who voted for Trump last fall while losing almost no Clinton voters.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is only two points behind Biden in the matchup against, but Sanders is going to have a big problem if he chooses to run again in 2020. The news that the Russians bought pro-Bernie Sanders Facebook ads to divide Democratic is not going to sit well with many Democratic voters. Sanders is also likely something that he didn’t have to deal with in 2016. The Democratic primary field is going to be very crowded. There could be as many as 15-20 Democrats running for the party’s nomination.

In 2016, Sanders had the luxury of being the alternative to Hillary Clinton. In 2020, progressive support could be divided between Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and another top-tier progressive Democrat. In contrast, Biden has an easier path as the beloved former vice president in the previous administration. Biden would be able to do something that Hillary Clinton couldn’t do. He will have the whole Obama coalition excited and behind him on day one.
A Biden/Trump matchup would cause headaches for the entire Republican Party. Joe Biden is the anti-Trump. A blue-collar person who didn’t grow up with money, and still isn’t rich. Biden has an emotional component and well of compassion that is non-existent in Trump. Where Trump is cold and detached, Biden is warm and personable.
Joe Biden would beat Donald Trump in a head to head matchup. If age and health aren’t issues, supporters of Joe Biden should be very encouraged by this poll.
