Donald Trump’s closest White House aides are openly wondering whether the president knows his administration could be doomed if Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives next fall.
According to a new report, which cites interviews with a handful of the president’s top allies, those closest to Trump don’t believe he grasps what serious trouble he would be in if Democrats win enough seats to take over the House in 2018.
More from the CNN report:
Top White House aides, lawmakers, donors and political consultants are privately asking whether President Donald Trump realizes that losing the House next year could put his presidency in peril.

In more than a dozen interviews, Republicans inside and outside the White House told CNN conversations are ramping up behind the scenes about whether Trump fully grasps that his feuds with members of his own party and shortage of legislative achievements could soon put the fate of his presidency at risk.
Not only do key Trump allies and donors think the president is oblivious to this risk, but they think he’s making it far worse by embracing former chief strategist Steve Bannon, who essentially declared war against the GOP establishment this weekend.
“[Trump’s] allowing his allies like Steve Bannon to really undermine Republican reelection campaigns,” said a partner at a GOP public affairs firm, according to CNN. “It’s just reckless and politically naive considering how devastating it would be to his presidency.”
Democrats have performed strongly in special elections since Trump was elected last fall, even in districts the president won, and surveys show that Republicans trail Democrats by a solid margin.
According to RealClearPolitics, Democrats have an eight-point lead over Republicans in a generic 2018 contest.
So the GOP is right to worry that Trump’s presidency would be at risk if they lose Congress next year, but their fears also serve as an admission that they have no interest in holding this president accountable as he repeatedly proves himself to be unfit for this office.
Republicans continue to sit on their hands as Donald Trump endangers this country on a daily basis, and they know Democrats will not.
