Trump Says Michael Flynn’s Crimes Don’t Matter Because The GOP Just Passed Wealthy Tax Cuts

Donald Trump essentially ignored the news that his former national security adviser lied to the FBI, telling the media on Saturday morning that there was “no collusion” and that “last night was one of the big nights.”

Trump’s brief non-response to the Flynn news comes after Senate Republicans passed tax reform legislation in the overnight hours that nobody – not even the president – has read.

When asked about the explosive Flynn news, Trump said:

What has been shown is no collusion. No collusion. There’s been absolutely, absolutely no collusion, so we’re very happy. And frankly, last night was one of the big nights. … We’ll see what happens. Thank you very much.

First, Trump is incorrect that it’s “been shown” that there were no collusion between his presidential campaign and the Russians during last year’s election. Not only did a lengthy list of his own advisers make secret contact with Russian officials during the campaign, but his own family members did.

He can repeat “no collusion” all he wants like a pull-toy, but he should speak with Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner, in particular, before making that claim again.

The president should also be careful what he wishes for. He may think changing the subject from Flynn’s crimes – and bombshell reporting that Flynn plans to testify against Trump – to the GOP tax scam will be good for him, but the American people see through that, too.

Distracting from the increasingly damning Russia scandal by touting a tax scam that will eviscerate the middle-class probably isn’t a good strategy.

Try again, Mr. President.
