Keith Ellison Shames Both Parties For Not Standing United Against Trump’s Dangerous Presidency

Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison said both political parties have not done enough to adequately stand up against Donald Trump’s dangerous presidency.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, Ellison said last night’s stunning victory in Alabama for Democrat Doug Jones is proof that members of both parties have nothing to fear in standing up to the unfit president.

Ellison said:

I think one of the things that many people, even some Democrats have been reluctant to really criticize Trump. They didn’t want to so-call resist. They wanted to talk about an affirmative, positive program, which I think is good. But the problem is Trump now really is not to be feared by anyone. And if Trump tries to fire Mueller, if Trump fails on his promise to do something about DACA, if he goes in there and passes this horrendous tax bill, I think that Republicans should not walk over the cliff with him. They should say, look, man, this is a bad thing for me in my district. I’ve got to face my own voters. I’m not walking over the cliff with you.

As the Democratic congressman noted, there is no longer any excuse for members of Congress – especially the Democrats – to curb their opposition to this president and his dangerous agenda.

If anything, they should recognize that the American people increasingly view Trump as incompetent and unfit. Voicing their opposition to him early and often isn’t just smart political strategy – it’s the right thing to do for the country.

If the results in Alabama prove anything, it’s that Trump is politically toxic and members of both political parties would be smart to run far and fast if they want a shot at keeping their seats in 2018.
