Donald Trump’s lawyer rushed to save the president from himself on Wednesday night, claiming he was “speaking hurriedly” when he agreed to an interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
According to the New York Times, White House lawyer Ty Cobb did his darndest to walk back the careless president’s comments, suggesting Trump only said them in passing and would rely on his legal counsel when making plans to meet with Mueller.
More from the Times:
Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer leading the response to the investigation, said Mr. Trump was speaking hurriedly and intended only to say that he was willing to meet.

“He’s ready to meet with them, but he’ll be guided by the advice of his personal counsel,” Mr. Cobb said. He said the arrangements were being worked out between Mr. Mueller’s team and the president’s personal lawyers.
The quick walk back comes after Trump told reporters earlier Monday that he would be happy to be interviewed by Robert Mueller.
“I would love to do that — I’d like to do it as soon as possible,” the president said, likely triggering his lawyers’ heads to explode.
Mueller and his team have continued to ramp up the special counsel investigation into whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia in 2016 and whether the president himself obstructed justice. In recent days, the probe has inched ever closer to Trump.
With Trump already in a tenuous legal position, an interview under oath with Robert Mueller is the last thing he needs. Obstructing justice and conspiring with a foreign government to undermine U.S. democracy is bad enough – he doesn’t need to add perjury to his list of potential crimes.
Donald Trump can shoot from the hip all he wants, but his legal team will stop at nothing to ensure that he is not subject to an under oath interview with Robert Mueller.
