Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy said that Donald Trump’s silence following Wednesday’s mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, is probably a good thing.
When Trump offers his thoughts on anything, it often makes matters much worse, and Murphy said he isn’t interested in hearing what Trump has to say – if he chooses to say anything at all.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes asked Murphy, “Do you want to hear from the President of the United States on this issue?” and Murphy responded:
I don’t know. I don’t know. I mean, I’d be worried to ask for more of President Trump’s thoughts on mass shootings. I worry that he would make it worse, not better. If I thought he was going to offer something that was real, actual consolation, I’d be willing to hear more. I’m not sure what’s that we would get.
At this hour, Donald Trump has yet to appear in front of a camera to address the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida which left at least 17 innocent people dead. While it shows a stunning lack of compassion and leadership, it may not be such a bad thing that this president is remaining silent.
After all, in other moments of national importance, he has spoken out loudly and made matters much worse. In the case of the deadly incident in Charlottesville, Virginia, Trump didn’t just speak out, but he openly sympathized with white supremacists.
In the case of mass shootings, Trump’s words would be even more meaningless. Not only does he lack basic human compassion, but he is completely beholden to the NRA and has no intention of doing something that could prevent future shootings.
There is no question that Donald Trump’s silence after this tragedy is stunning and completely out of character for him, but the country is probably better off without his input.
