As Bob Mueller Gets Closer To Trump, GOP Senators Call For Investigation Into The FBI

With Robert Mueller’s probe getting increasingly close to Donald Trump, Republican senators are urging the Justice Department to name a special counsel to look into the FBI’s handling of the Russia investigation.

According to The Hill, “GOP Sens. Chuck Grassley (Iowa), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Thom Tillis (N.C.) and John Cornyn (Texas), the No. 2 Senate Republican, sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein calling for a special counsel to ‘gather all the facts.'”

That’s right – the Republicans are more interested in investigating the investigators than the president and his corrupt team.

“We believe that a special counsel is needed to work with the Inspector General to independently gather the facts and make prosecutorial decisions, if any are merited,” the GOP senators wrote, according to the report. “The Justice Department cannot credibly investigate itself without these enhanced measures of independence.”

As The Hill also pointed out, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Thursday in a Fox News interview that he believes a second investigation needs to take place because “crimes may have been committed.”

All of this comes, of course, after another bombshell story in The New York Times on Thursday, which reported that Bob Mueller is going straight for Trump by subpoenaing Russia documents from the Trump Organization.

The Times pointed out: “The subpoena is the latest indication that the investigation, which Mr. Trump’s lawyers once regularly assured him would be completed by now, will drag on for at least several more months.”

As Jason Easley wrote earlier, the news that Mueller is going after the Trump Organization also has Trump in a panic that “Special Counsel Robert Mueller is about to bust his kids Ivanka, Don Jr., and Eric for financial crimes involving Russia.”

This is about undermining Robert Mueller and protecting Donald Trump

Each time Robert Mueller takes a step closer to Donald Trump, as he did again Thursday, Republicans become more brazen in their efforts to protect the president and undermine the special counsel investigation.

When Republicans say they want to “gather all the facts,” they aren’t talking about facts related to Trump’s ties to Russia or whether he obstructed justice. They don’t seem to care about that.

Instead, with Trump and his associates clearly in Mueller’s sights, they believe it’s a more important endeavor to cast doubts over the entire investigation before it’s too late.

But here’s a news flash for Republicans: It’s already too late. It’s the reason why Conor Lamb defeated Rick Saccone on Tuesday, and it’s why so many of their so-called “safe” congressional seats are at risk of falling into the blue column this fall.

The GOP is now permanently linked to this president and any effort to undermine or destroy Mueller’s investigation before it takes down the president will be too little too late.
