Trump is abusing his presidential power and tanking Amazon’s stock for a simple reason. The President Of The United States wants to destroy The Washington Post.
Gabriel Sherman at Vanity Fair reported:
Now, according to four sources close to the White House, Trump is discussing ways to escalate his Twitter attacks on Amazon to further damage the company. “He’s off the hook on this. It’s war,” one source told me. “He gets obsessed with something, and now he’s obsessed with Bezos,” said another source. “Trump is like, how can I fuck with him?”
According to sources, Trump wants the Post Office to increase Amazon’s shipping costs. When Trump previously discussed the idea inside the White Hose, Gary Cohn had explained that Amazon is a benefit to the Postal Service, which has seen mail volume plummet in the age of e-mail. “Trump doesn’t have Gary Cohn breathing down his neck saying you can’t do the Post Office shit,” a Republican close to the White House said. “He really wants the Post Office deal renegotiated. He thinks Amazon’s getting a huge fucking deal on shipping.”
Trump is attacking Amazon because they share an owner with The Washington Post
Donald Trump is costing the American people millions of dollars in their investment and retirement accounts because he doesn’t like the coverage that he gets in The Post. If this viscerally seems like an abuse of presidential power to you, that’s because it is. As PoliticusUSA’s Sarah Jones has been writing for days,Trump is abusing his power. If any other president did what he is doing and harmed average Americans in the process, there would be congressional investigations.
For Trump, the bar of abuse and corruption is low that these attacks are just another Monday.
Jeff Bezos isn’t going to be harmed by Trump’s attacks. If anything an attack from the least popular president in the modern history of polling might boost Amazon’s sales. The people who are being hurt by Trump’s tantrums are people who have 401(k)s that have Amazon in them. People who invested in Amazon as part of their retirement are being harmed by this.
Trump doesn’t understand that Amazon and The Washington Post aren’t the same entity, but his intention is clear. Donald Trump wants to kill the free press, and if he could ever harm a giant like The Washington Post, the chilling effect on the media would be swift and severe.
