DNC Chair Tom Perez said that Democrats are doing what Trump won’t. They are warning Putin to stay out of the 2018 election with their lawsuit.
DNC Chair Tom Perez said on MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes, “I’m worried about the 2018 elections. There is no accountability for what the Russians did. And when they do things with impunity, because this administration won’t hold them accountable, we’ve got to hold them accountable. That’s what the civil justice system is about. It’s about accountability. It’s about deterrence. Our democracy is on fire. And we have to preserve our democracy. We’ve got to preserve full and fair elections. And that’s a big part of what this is about.”
Hayes asked, “But the enemies aren’t going to be held accountable before the 2018 midterms, right?”
Perez answered, “Well, absolutely, we won’t finish the case before now. But we want to send a very, very clear signal. If you want to mess with elections here, they are going to be consequences. We are raising the cost of your interference. We know that this administration is Putin’s poodle.”
Democrats aren’t going to let Putin interfere in another election
It is going to be much more difficult for the Russians to interfere in 2018 and 2020. People are more aware of Russian propaganda. The social media companies are reeling, and the Putin bots aren’t going to get a free pass to spread their propaganda, and the Democratic Party is vigilant against the threat. The lawsuit isn’t going to be settled quickly, but it has already thrown Trump for a loop and has him threatening to sue the Democratic Party. Putin and Trump committed a crime against the United States in 2016, and no one is going to stand by and let it happen again in 2018 and 2020.
