Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut blasted gun nuts on Saturday, saying they support an “imaginary” version of the Second Amendment.
In a tweet, the Democrat said he supports the “real Second Amendment,” which “isn’t absolute,” as many of the NRA-owned politicians claim.
As Sen. Murphy said, nowhere in the Second Amendment does it state that civilians should have unfettered access to any and every type of firearm they desire.

This interpretation may bode well for gun lobby pocketbooks – and the politicians that rely on that money – but it’s not the truth, and it’s killing our young people.
We’ve seen it repeatedly, with the most recent examples coming this year in Parkland, Florida (17 killed in February) and Santa Fe, Texas (10 killed just yesterday).
Not every shooting is carried out using assault-style weapons, but most of the mass casualty events in recent years have been – from Parkland to Sandy Hook to Las Vegas.
It’s simple: People hoping to kill a lot of people in a short period of time rely on easy access to these weapons, like the AR-15, to carry out their violent impulses.
The Second Amendment was drafted at a time when this type of weapon was unimaginable. But there is no question that those who wrote it into our Constitution didn’t intend for the right to be “absolute,” as Sen. Murphy pointed out.
On this issue, Republicans – wholly owned by the NRA – are a lost cause. They will continue to offer thoughts and prayers while doing nothing substantive to tackle the problem.
But too many Democrats also tiptoe around this issue. It’s time for that to end.
The vast majority of the American people support tougher, smarter gun laws. It’s time for lawmakers to represent them, not the loud and shrinking majority of firearm fanatics who have controlled this debate for far too long.
