Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) is holding a women’s summit that will feature topics like gardening and weight loss in what even for Republicans might be the most sexist event a member of the GOP has held in the modern era.
The Tampa Bay Times reported:
U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Palm Harbor, is campaigning for a seventh term in Congress and on June 9 he’s holding his first-ever Women’s Summit, pitched as “an opportunity for women to learn about relevant topics that have a direct impact on their lives.”
So what are the critical issues facing women that Bilirakis will highlight in breakout sessions? Gardening, weight loss and “a woman’s guide to financial planning,” according to the event flier.
Apparently, Rep. Gus Bilirakis didn’t have room on the agenda for such topics as Barefoot, Pregnant, and Loving It, and A Woman’s Place is in the Home. There was no mention of the gender pay gap, #MeToo, domestic violence, the threat to a woman’s ability to make her own healthcare decision. Every time that one starts to think that a show like Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale is fiction, Republicans do something to remind us all that the threat to women is very real, and being encouraged and acted upon by the presidency of Donald Trump.
