James Comey Says Americans Must Vote for Democrats This Fall

Former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday said “history has its eyes on us” and encouraged Americans to vote for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections.

Comey posted a tweet urging Americans to turn away from Republican candidates this November.

“James @Comey urges voters to choose Democrats, warns that ‘history has its eyes on us’

In a tweet Tuesday night, Comey, formerly a “lifelong Republican” strongly criticized the GOP for not standing up to Trump.

This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that “Ambition must … counteract ambition.” All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don’t matter right now. History has its eyes on us.

Comey’s comments came the day after Trump’s joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he refused to stand up to Putin and denounce Russia for hacking and other interference in the 2016 elections. He also criticized his own intelligence agencies, leading to outcries from members of his own party.

After the backlash, Trump walked back his previous comments on Tuesday and read a prepared statement saying that he misspoke when he said that he did not see any reason why Russia would have interfered in the 2016 election.

“I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia,” Trump said Tuesday. “It should have been obvious. So you can put that in and I think that probably clarifies things.”

Comey criticized the president’s conduct at the summit as well, saying,

“This was the day an American president stood on foreign soil next to a murderous lying thug and refused to back his own country. Patriots need to stand up and reject the behavior of this president.”

Comey said in April that he was leaving the Republican Party because he didn’t like what the party had become under the leadership of the president.

“The Republican Party has left me and many others,” he said. “I just think they’ve lost their way and I can’t be associated with it.”

Comey was fired by Trump from his job as FBI Director in May of 2017.
